Hello! The Detroit Zoological Society<https://detroitzoo.org/about/your-detroit-zoo/>, the Library of Michigan<https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/>, and the Michigan Afterschool Partnership <https://www.miafterschool.org/> are excited to announce Leap into Science training opportunities for public libraries and afterschool partners. Participating public libraries and afterschool program partners will receive support to purchase materials you need to run a "Light & Shadow" based STEM program. Registration will be limited, so be sure to complete this interest form<https://forms.gle/zaRoh8AJmQSaYut68> by end of day, Friday, August 13th, for a chance to be selected. Leap into Science<http://leap.fi.edu/> is a nationwide program developed by The Franklin Institute Science Museum<http://www.fi.edu/> that integrates open-ended science activities with children's books, designed for children ages 3-10 and their families. The program empowers educators to offer workshops in community settings like libraries, museums, and out-of-school time programs to engage underserved audiences in accessible and familiar settings. Registering for and attending this training makes you a Partner Organization in our Michigan Cohort. As a Leap into Science partner organization, you are committing to: * Scheduling and leading at least three (3) Leap into Science virtual or in-person workshops for children and families by end of May 2022. * Posting each of your organization's workshops to The Connectory<https://theconnectory.org/>, a searchable directory for STEM programs across the country. * Leading Leap into Science activities during National Leap into Science Week (February 21-26, 2022) * Completing a workshop report following each workshop your organization hosts. * Participating in quarterly virtual check-in calls with other trained educators in your state. Each organization who participates in Leap into Science will receive: * A virtual training on high-quality science and literacy curriculum and facilitation strategies for 1-2 educators from your organization. * Ongoing support during program implementation as part of a Leap into Science National Network. * Access to the national Leap into Science leadership team and online resources. * A curriculum toolkit and funding for materials. * Opportunity to network and collaborate with out-of-school-time organizations in your region. Registration for accepted organizations will open by August 23rd and run through September 10th. Picture Book Neighborhoods

Hi all, For those who have their picture books separated into various categories, I have a couple questions for you. We are going to move our "Favorites" picture books to its own section. How do you decide which book qualifies as a favorite? Does it need to have a certain number of circulations? Should it be something that recently checked out or simply has a large number of checkouts from the past? If a book is moved from the regular section to the favorites section, should all that author's books be moved as well? If there are other details you'd like to share with me on how to maneuver this change, and how your patrons adjusted to this new section, I would greatly appreciate it. The successful candidate will serve a community of 62,000+ residents from two locations - a Main Library - housing the Bruce S. Kershner Gallery and an innovative children's space - and a busy, popular neighborhood Woods Branch Library. The new Town Librarian will work with a committed staff of 27 full-time and 50 part-time, an energetic core of volunteers, an established Friends of the Library, and an annual $3.6 million budget to deliver quality library services and programs. The Town Librarian of the Fairfield Public Library reports to a six-member Library Board of Trustees, serves as a Town department head (reporting to the First Selectwoman on administrative matters), and works with the Board, staff, First Selectwoman, and major stakeholders to support and implement the strategic vision for the Library, aligning the Library's mission, goals, and objectives with the community's needs and priorities. Overall responsibilities include developing and maintaining effective internal and external communications; building and leading a diverse team of talented professionals to manage Library operations; planning, evaluating and oversight of the library budget; strengthening current governmental funding sources; and developing additional revenue sources. Qualifications. Minimum qualifications are a master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited program and a minimum of 5-7 years of increased responsibilities with administrative library experience including a minimum of three years supervisory experience. Essential attributes and skills include vision, creativity, energy, and enthusiasm; ability to network, partner, and promote library services; budget experience; political acumen; demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and consensus-building skills. A track record of working effectively with a policy-making board, unions, and collaboratively with Town officials is desirable. The successful candidate will also demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills while possessing comfort and skill in fundraising and development activities.
