MCLS is seeking library staff from all types of libraries who want to help shape future group purchases. Our vision for the Product Advisory Librarians (PALs) is to test and trial products and provide feedback. This information will help us determine the direction for product offerings in a more thoughtful manner. Tichelaar has a PhD in Literature from Western Michigan University and Bachelor's and Master’s Degrees in English from Northern Michigan University. He is the owner of Marquette Fiction, his own publishing company, and of Superior Book Productions, a professional editing, proofreading, and book layout company. He is also the former president (2008-2019) of the Upper Peninsula Publishers and Authors Association. Tyler began writing his first novel at age sixteen in 1987. In 2006, he published his first novel, /Iron Pioneers: The Marquette Trilogy, Book One/. More than twenty books have followed. In 2009, Tyler won first place in the historical fiction category in the Reader Views Literary Awards for his novel /Narrow Lives/. He has since sponsored that contest, offering the Tyler R. Tichelaar Award for Historical Fiction. In 2011, Tyler was awarded the Marquette County Outstanding Writer Award, and the same year, he received the Barb Kelly Award for Historical Preservation for his efforts to promote Marquette's history. But few know anything else about him beyond his being buried in Marquette’s beautiful Presque Isle Park. Kawbawgam witnessed a period of intense industrial growth and unheralded change for Native Americans. Growing up at Sault Sainte Marie when the area was still claimed by Great Britain, his first memory was of armed Americans coercing his people into ceding their lands to the United States Government. As the son, nephew, stepson, and later son-in-law of Ojibwa chiefs, and in time a chief in his own right, Kawbawgam learned early that he would have to walk a fine line to keep the peace for his people. After temporarily migrating to Canada with other Ojibwa in disagreement with the American government, he returned to the Sault where he was recruited to help found the town of Marquette Kawbawgam would preside over an Ojibwa and metis community that ensured the white community’s survival during Marquette’s early years, only to be pushed to the community’s margins as the city grew and prospered. Yet the admiration and affection he won from whites as well as the Ojibwa ensured peace and a legacy that lives on today. Notable Books initiative from the Upper Peninsula Publishers & Authors Association (UPPAA) has received two important recognitions in the past month. The Upper Peninsula Region of Library Cooperation (UPRLC) awarded the U.P. Notable Books Club <https://UPPAA.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b1016c5c910959a236f2ff48f&i…> the distinction “Program of the Year” at its annual conference, which was held virtually on September 28th, 2021. The second distinction awarded to the initiative is its inclusion on the Great Lakes Digital Libraries front page as a curated collection of winning books. Currently, 16 different editions (eBooks and audiobooks) of past U.P. Notable Books have been asked to donate a single digital copy of their book to this lending library available to anyone in the state of Michigan with a local library card of any kind. The UPPAA expects this curated collection to eventually include all of the 20 past winners and the next batch of 10 to be announced in January 2022. Ethnic and Cultural Diversity in the Collection “We have a very strong bias towards inclusion of all the ethnicities and cultures that are in the diverse regions of the U.P.,” opined Victor R. Volkman, current UPPAA president. He tells the club has awarded distinction to Anishinaabe writers Phil Bellfy (/Three Fires Unity/) and Linda LeGarde Grover (/In The Night of Memory/). Other books, such as Mary Doria Russel’s /Women of the Copper Country/ highlight the contributions of Scandinavian immigrants to the rich tapestry of U.P. life. About the U.P. Notable Books Club The U.P Notable Books Club is a spinoff of the original U.P. Notable books list and is the brainchild of Evelyn Gathu, Director, Crystal Falls District Community Library. Each month, the Book Club holds a Q&A session for the public with a different winner of the U.P. Notable Books award. U.P. Notable Books is an annual list of essential new books that emphasize U.P. content or have been written by U.P. authors. Each year, UPPAA consults with Upper Michigan booksellers, book reviewers, writers, and publishers to winnow down the notable books to a bare ten titles. On Wednesday, October 13, at 7:00 pm EDT, the Clarke Historical Library at Central Michigan University will host the first of four presentations as part of the Clarke's Virtual Fall Speakers Series (you can find the entire line-up on the Clarke's website<https://www.cmich.edu/library/clarke/publicprograms/current_exhibit/pages/d…>). Rachel Marie-Crane Williams will speak about her latest graphic novel, Run Home if You Don't Want to Be Killed. In the context of WWII and the emerging civil rights movement, Detroit was the scene of deadly civil unrest in the summer of 1943. Professor Williams' book tells the story of this painful time in Michigan's history. She will join the Clarke to share her research and artistry in developing this book. This presentation is free and open to the public. The event will be broadcast via Central Michigan University's videoconferencing tool, Webex, and it will be recorded to enjoy at a later time. We use Biblionix Apollo and I contacted support to suggest adding a place for this, and they said it’s already there, it just needs to be enabled!
