Program Recommendation
by Mary Ruge 21 Dec '21

21 Dec '21

I just wanted to share an awesome program we had a few weeks ago, *Christmas Cookie Traditions with Food Historian, Sarah Wassberg Johnson* on Zoom. We had great attendance and a lot of positive reviews. Sarah was really easy to work with, very professional, and returned all of the needed papers on time (contract, W9) and even sent her own invoice. She knows so much about food and has been on numerous podcasts, written in magazines, and has her own food historian blog. She is based out of New York, but our virtual program went very, very well. I cannot recommend her highly enough! *Mary Ruge* Adult Services Librarian *Hackley Public Library* *316 W. United for Libraries Session - Library Boards, Intellectual Freedom, and Challenges recording now available
by White, Shannon (MDE) 21 Dec '21

21 Dec '21

The Library of Michigan provides all Michigan public libraries with membership in the ALA division of United for Libraries, UFL. Each month UFL holds a "Learning Live" session. The December 14 session titled, "Library Boards, Intellectual Freedom, and Challenges" is now available as a recording on the members only area of the UFL site. According to a recent article in American Libraries (A Conflict of Values <https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fe.z.teacha…> , Nov. 1), "Public libraries are facing a wave of trustee candidates whose goals challenge intellectual freedom, community service, and other core values of librarianship." How can you protect your library and board from finding itself in a position where a board member's ideologies oppose core library tenets? This session will focus on preparedness strategies, community building, and how to create strong policies that address programming, budgeting, and services. To access the recording of this session follow these steps: 1. Visit https://www.ala.org/united/ and click on Statewide Access-Find Your State button at the top of the page. 2. Scroll down to the Michigan section. Either login or register for your membership account. 3. Once you login you will find several squares for each class or session recording. Find the one titled, Library Boards, Intellectual Freedom, and Challenges and click on it. You can access the slides, details and the recording from there. Michigan public library staff can set up their own profiles at the UFL site to access the membership resources provided with the statewide membership courtesy of the Library of Michigan. If you have any questions, please contact us at LM-LibTraining(a)michigan.gov<mailto:LM-LibTraining@michigan.gov>. Hi all,Yesterday I posted a message asking for public library assistant director job descriptions. Many of my colleagues here on Michlib-L generously shared, and a few others asked me to in turn share what I received from the list. I've compiled all of the responses into a zipped folder which is attached to this message. To be clear, Van Buren District Library has an associate (assistant) director we're very happy with. We've been working on updating all of our job descriptions over recent years, and this is another one we plan to look at.
