eBooks: Consumer Pricing Vs. Library Pricing
by Jim Flury 22 Dec '21

22 Dec '21

All, You are no doubt aware of the huge price discrepancies that exist when it comes to the price of a consumer eBook vs. the price of a library eBook. ALA and the state library associations, MLA included, have been working with legislators in an effort to find a solution. The goal is not to put publishers/authors/aggregators (OverDrive, etc.) in financial peril which serves none of us well but rather, to come up with a fair and equitable solution that benefits all, including libraries. Below are links to three articles related to this issue. The Axios article summarizes an eBook price equity law that is scheduled to go into effect in Maryland on January 1. The Association of American Publishers has filed an injunction for emergency relief in an effort to overturn the MD law. In New York, a similar law is on the Governor's desk. It will go into effect if signed, or even if the Governor takes no action. I have read of similar efforts taking place in Rhode Island. The article also mentions Massachusetts. On a national level, Senator Wyden (OR) and Representative Eshoo (CA) sent letters both to publishers (September, 2021) and to aggregators (OverDrive, etc. November, 2021) asking them a series of questions related to this issue. Summaries of these letters, as well as links to the letters themselves, can be found in the second and third link. I've yet to see any information released when it comes to the answers to these questions. [ https://www.axios.com/libraries-enlist-states-in-fight-over-ebook-rules-f16… | https://www.axios.com/libraries-enlist-states-in-fight-over-ebook-rules-f16… ] [ https://www.finance.senate.gov/chairmans-news/wyden-eshoo-press-big-five-pu… | https://www.finance.senate.gov/chairmans-news/wyden-eshoo-press-big-five-pu… ] [ https://www.wyden.senate.gov/news/press-releases/wyden-and-eshoo-press-for-… | https://www.wyden.senate.gov/news/press-releases/wyden-and-eshoo-press-for-… ] The Michigan Library Association is doing a great job of keeping on top of this. 2022 could prove to be an interesting year on the eBook front! FW: MDHHS shares Media Resources for Suicide Prevention Reporting Toolbox
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 22 Dec '21

Please consider sharing the resources below with your communities. Cathy Lancaster Youth Services Coordinator Library of Michigan 702 W. Kalamazoo St. Lansing, MI 48915 My Pronouns: She/Her/Hers - See www.mypronouns.org<http://www.mypronouns.org/> to learn more. Recently, a major news outlet published a news story that contained potentially harmful messaging for individuals at-risk of suicide. Due to the circulation of that story within our state, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is reaching out to our media and public health partners to share current Suicide Prevention Media Resources with you. We respect and encourage the autonomy of the media. We also believe in sharing best practices within a public health context as it relates to the coverage of suicide. When crafting your messages about suicide prevention and reporting on a death by suicide, we urge you to make sure they align with safe and effective messaging recommendations. Worldwide studies have found that certain types of news coverage can increase the likelihood of suicide in vulnerable individuals. Word choice matters and responsible reporting that encourages help-seeking can reduce the risk of additional suicides. Media Resources for Suicide Prevention Reporting Toolbox The American Association of Suicidology toolkit, Media as Partners in Suicide Prevention<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> was generated by extensive consultation with journalists and those with lived experience of suicide attempts and thoughts. It contains critical information for all media professionals looking to effectively report on suicide as a topic. Recommendations for Reporting on Suicide<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> is a two-page document that was developed with worldwide suicide prevention agencies. It offers specific reporting strategies that could help prevent another suicide or encourage someone to seek help. The National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> offers several resources on its media messaging page, including "Real Stories" which helps media tell positively framed news stories. The National Action Alliance also has several other categories of information, including a framework for successful messaging which aims to inform organizations how to craft media content about suicide. There are also Michigan-based coalitions, crisis lines, fact sheets, trainings and events listed on the MDHHS website at Michigan.gov/suicideprevention<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> number, 800-273-8255, should be included with any news media materials that talk about suicide. As many of you know, I am deeply passionate about this issue having lost my former legislative roommate and many fellow Marines to suicide. I hope you might receive this message in the spirit with which it is intended: to share best practices and to increase positive outcomes for all Michiganders. Thank you for your work on this important public health issue. Together we can make a difference in Michigan. Youth & Teen Services Updates

YALSA YALSA is in desperate need of someone to run the Hub<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Furldefens…>. It comes with a stipend! We're running into a lot of folks that don't have the time to commit (understandably). It'd roughly be 5-10 hours a week. We're willing to take someone for the interim as well: http://yalsa.ala.org/blog/2021/12/20/the-hub-member-manager-sought-for-2021…<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Furldefens…> ALA The Coretta Scott King Book Awards Committee (CSK) is petitioning ALA Council to move to Round Table status. If approved, the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Round Table (CSKBART) will launch in June 2022. In 1982, the Coretta Scott King Book Awards became an official American Library Association award. Over the years, the CSK Awards have established a well-documented, 51-year history that recognizes African American authors and illustrators for their outstanding contributions to literature for children and young adults. The annual awarding of the CSK Awards is to encourage the artistic expression of the Black experience through literature and the graphic arts, including biographical, social, historical, and social history treatments. Book award recipients receive this award because they promote an understanding and appreciation of the Black experience. Created to commemorate the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to honor his wife, Coretta Scott King, the Awards exemplify her courage and determination to continue his work for peace and world brotherhood. This mission and purpose will remain steadfast. CSK is grateful to both the Ethnic & Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT) and the Social Responsibilities Round Table (SRRT) for their leadership and support over the years. These benefactors have enabled CSK to grow and develop into the dynamic group it is today. As CSK moves toward an exciting new future, we believe that it is time for the CSK Book Awards Committee to continue its forward trajectory by preparing for this new leadership role within the American Library Association. If you agree with our goal, here is your opportunity to assist with this endeavor. To demonstrate your support, please use these links to: (1) Sign the CSK Petition: www.ala.org/CFApps/epetition/...<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ala.o…> (Please note you must be an ALA Member to sign the e-petition) (2) Submit CSK Letter of Support to - Monica Chapman, Project Coordinator, Coretta Scott King Book Awards and ODLOS Round Tables (mlchapman(a)ala.org<mailto:mlchapman@ala.org?subject=Letter%20of%20Support%20for%20CSK%20Round%20Table%20Status>) We will need one hundred signatures for the petition. Also, fifty support letters are required by January 15, 2022. Your assistance is appreciated!
