Shifting Landscapes 11: Confederate Monuments
by Thomas Trahey 14 Feb '22

14 Feb '22

Confederate statues and symbols have made dramatic headlines lately with controversy over whether cities will continue to have these historic landmarks in place. Today, for the 11th Shifting Landscapes session, historian Mike Nagle is addressing this topic with a live talk and Zoom session. Last week, we felt John C. Calhoun's contempt and challenges as his monument was being removed. Watch it at mcdl.pub/Calhoun <https://youtu.be/lev9bTNQBnE> Tonight we explore the topic further. Join us live in Downtown Ludington or on Zoom at mcdl.pub/sl-zoom at 7pm. -- Thomas Trahey Mason County District Library Head of Circulation 231-843-8465

Online reading challenge platform announcement!
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 14 Feb '22

14 Feb '22

The Library of Michigan will be providing public libraries across Michigan READsquared<https://www.readsquared.com/> for tracking their online reading programs through this coming year. The opportunity to submit a site request will begin on March 1, with two live trainings scheduled for late March and mid-April, so look for a message from Cathy Lancaster with the sign-up link in the coming weeks. A few key points: * READsquared will help libraries import any files from other online platforms, such as 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten or past registrants that created accounts for summer reading. * Pre-created programs are set-up to choose from and libraries will be able to adjust all program defaults to meet their needs, or, if you choose to design your own from scratch, the estimated staff time on program design is less than 2 hours. * A Mobile App is available. * Reading recommendations, booklists, and the ability to link to your catalog is available. * READsquared also offers the ability to track "paper program" participation, so libraries can easily collect data. * Flyers for more information on READsquared for review<https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1hgLn79y-abOdcTD-c2vSI_OMQaUeIvh8?us…>. * Not sure your library want to commit to a site? Feel free to review an earlier recorded demo<https://recordings.join.me/usvkAL6JWkyjI7Lb-Te0Pg> of READsquared. * If your library already maintains READsquared, they will be in touch on a library-to-library basis about refunding any pre-paid invoices. LM requested quotes in January from 5 online challenge providers and received 3 responses, out of which READsquared was selected for the support they will provide Michigan's public libraries. This support will have the option to be renewed by LM on an annual basis. READsquared is provided in part thanks to the support of the Institute of Museum and Library Services. I will be posting more information in the next few weeks, so please stay tuned. Thank you, Cathy Lancaster Youth Services Coordinator Library of Michigan 702 W. Livonia Public Library to host award-winning author Scott Ellsworth on Tues, March 8
by Plant, Paige 12 Feb '22

12 Feb '22

Livonia Public Library invites you to join us for a conversation with award-winning writer Scott Ellsworth via Zoom on Tuesday, March 8 at 7pm. Scott will discuss his newest book, The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice, which tells the riveting story of the Tulsa Race Massacre. In less than 24 hours in the spring of 1921, over 1000 homes and businesses in Tulsa's Greenwood District--once known as "Black Wall Street"--were looted, burned and bombed from the air in the worst single incident of racial violence in American history. Thousands of Black residents were left homeless and hundreds were injured; the number of dead remains unknown. The history of this horrific event was systematically suppressed for decades, until courageous individuals fought to bring it to light. The Ground Breaking tells the story of the massacre, unearths the history of how it was covered up, and recounts the ongoing efforts to identify victims and provide justice for survivors and their families. The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice was longlisted for both the National Book Award and the Carnegie Medal. We will be giving away at random one signed copy of the book to a program attendee. Registration is required on the library's website at: <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__livonia.libcal.com_eve…> https://livonia.libcal.com/event/8798381<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__livonia.libcal.com_eve…> We hope you will join us! 10 Feb '22

The Ypsilanti District Library is partnering with the Ann Arbor Area SCORE office and the Salem South Lyon District to offer a free virtual program on NFTS, bitcoin and digital assets on Wed, Mar 2, at 6:30 pm. Here is the program title and description: Small Business Savvy: Bitcoins,NFTs and Digital Assets Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, and digital assets have captured the imagination of the business world, artists, even major banks and some major manufactures (think Tesla). This workshop will introduce you to the world of digital assets so you can start making informed decisions about participation in this alternative monetary system. Topics touched on will include: - Defining Cryptocurrency and Blockchain - Cryptocurrency wallets - Transactional costs (GAS) - Mining - Touching on NFT’s and other evolving forms Since this is a virtual event, we thought you may have some patrons who would be interested in learning more about these digital assets. Please note that this presentation will be geared towards knowledge for a business person, not for investment purposes. Feel free to share this event with your library patrons, they are welcome to attend. You do need to register to attend this event, the registration page is here: https://attend.ypsilibrary.org/event/6099141 We'll send out the Zoom link to anyone who registers a few days in advance of the event. -- Paula C. Books for Book Club Kit available
by Janelle Bishop 10 Feb '22

10 Feb '22

Hey Everyone, I recently withdrew some book club kits because we needed more shelving space. All of the books are in good condition, does anyone want them for their library? There are 10 paperback copies of each book. I am leaving the number label on the spines and a sticker on the front with our name and that they are part of a book club kit on it. Feel free to cover or remove them. Here is what I have: - Philomena: A Mother, Her Son and a Fifty-Year Search by Martin Sixsmith - This is How I'd Love You by Hazel Woods - The Garden of Letters by Alyson Richman - Escape by Carolyn Jessop Let me know which ones you are interested in and your ZV code and I will send them to you in delivery. Thank you very much, Janelle Janelle (Martin) Bishop Head of Fiction Marguerite deAngeli Library Lapeer District Library 921 W.
