The third Library 2.021 mini-conference: "Libraries as Community Anchors," will be held online (and for free) on Thursday, October 21st, 2021. Libraries are increasingly addressing challenges associated with digital equity, access, and inclusion, as well as issues of security and privacy. For many years, community members have looked to public libraries to provide baseline, public, computer and internet access. In this way, libraries exist as important Community Anchor Institutions (CAIs), defined by the FCC "as schools, libraries, hospitals and other medical providers, public safety entities, institutions of higher education, and community support organizations that facilitate greater use of broadband by vulnerable populations, including low-income, the unemployed, and the aged" (FCC, 2011, p. 38). In light of the recent Covid-19 pandemic and other natural disasters such as floods, drought, firestorms, hurricanes, and tornadoes, universal access to the internet has never been more important. Libraries increasingly have an important role to play: as second responders in large scale events via the development and deployment of collaborative connectivity projects; in developing strategies to bridge technological digital divides; and to promote digital access, equity, opportunity, and inclusion. More SOS self-service stations to ease reliance on libraries

Hello. During the height of the pandemic, many Secretary of State customers turned to libraries for access to our online SOS services which at times became overwhelming. To help ease the burden on libraries, we have deployed more self-service stations across the state, including several in rural areas with plans to add even more. We are already up to 157 statewide, including 114 in grocery stores. To help alert the public about the availability of SOS self-service stations, we're hoping libraries will consider sharing the following message and attached image on social media and via any other communication channel available to the public (newsletter, website, etc.). More Secretary of State self-service stations deployed across Michigan The Secretary of State now offers more self-service stations than ever before, including 114 at grocery stores and other locations, and 43 inside SOS branch offices. An avid swimmer, aspiring novelist, voracious reader, and intermediate knitter, she has more than 20 years' experience fundraising for nonprofit organizations. Tompkins County Public Library Foundation's Readathon started in 2013 as a 24-hour reading challenge and has evolved into an all-day signature fundraising event. In 2020 and 2021, a virtual format became necessary, allowing the Foundation to realize a new set of opportunities that will be part of the event in years to come. Kerry will share lessons learned (from being both an event organizer and participant), advice for making the most of peer-to-peer fundraising events, and how to help your biggest library lovers become library supporters. Hold On, Let Me Ask a Librarian Based on a board member's observation that the best Zoom events were a lot like old-time radio programs, they created their own version of NPR's quiz show, Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me, titled Hold On, Let Me Ask a Librarian. The event broke new ground for virtual fundraising programming and actively engaging an audience more than a little tired of staring at a screen. Kerry will share what went into creating the event, what challenges the Foundation faced, and what they might do differently the next time around.
