Transforming Senior Services and Outreach ALA Webinar Wednesday, 11/17/2021 2:30 PM-4:00 PM (Eastern) The pandemic has exacerbated the challenge of reaching out to seniors, with seniors both at higher risk for the pandemic and less likely to use online services. This workshop covers innovations and best practices for library senior services that are emerging in the face of the pandemic. Attendees will learn ways to adapt outreach services through technology and how to adjust pre-pandemic programming to a time of restricted access and less personal contact. The workshop also presents innovative examples of completely new programming created during the pandemic. Timothy J. Dickey is an Adult Librarian with the nationally acclaimed Columbus Metropolitan Libraries and a library science educator teaching adult services, research methods, and library technology for the faculties of Kent State University and San José State University. He also has worked with Lynn Silipigni Connaway at the OCLC Office of Research, specializing in user studies and data mining research. The Clarke Historical Library Presents Kris Spaulding on Water in Michigan's Brewing Industry

On Wednesday, October 27, at 7:00 pm EDT, the Clarke Historical Library at Central Michigan University will host the third of four presentations as part of the Clarke's Virtual Fall Speakers Series (you can find the entire line-up on the Clarke's website<https://www.cmich.edu/library/clarke/publicprograms/current_exhibit/pages/d…>). An industry with a long history in Michigan and that has a major impact on today's economy, brewing relies on clean water to create high-quality beer. Kris Spaulding, president and owner of Brewery Vivant in Grand Rapids, will discuss the history and importance of water and sustainability in Michigan's world-class craft brewing industry. Joining her for this conversation will be Margrethe Kearney, a senior attorney with the Environmental Law and Policy Center. NEA's Big Read grant opportunity

The National Endowment for the Arts Big Read supports organizations across the country in developing community-wide reading programs which encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences. These programs include activities such as author readings, book discussions, art exhibits, lectures, film series, music or dance events, theatrical performances, panel discussions, and other events and activities related to the community's chosen book. Approximately 75 organizations in communities of varying sizes across the country will be selected to participate in NEA Big Read each year from September through June. Selected organizations receive grants ranging from $5,000 to $20,000 to support their NEA Big Read projects. In addition, the National Endowment for the Arts offers online content for each reading selection. CSLP Our wonderful committees are just getting started on CSLP's 2023 manual, and I am emailing to request more volunteers for the Spanish Committees. We need people for both the Spanish Idea Committee, which will be working on program ideas from now until the end of this year, and the Spanish Review Committee, which will review and provide feedback on drafted materials in early 2022. We are really hoping to expand our Spanish-language/bilingual offerings to more age groups in 2023, but we need more volunteers to make that happen!
