Penguin Random House and the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL) Launch New Grant Program

Penguin Random House and the Association for Rural and Small Libraries Launch New Grant Program Penguin Random House and The Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL) today announced a rolling grant program to recognize rural, small and tribal libraries that support underserved communities in the U.S. and U.S. territories. The program will award grants of up to $2,500 to libraries that demonstrate a true need. Grants are not limited to literacy and may be used for everything from library programming and books to resources like hotspots that help community members access important information. In-kind donations will also be considered. Kate Laughlin, Executive Director, The Association for Rural & Small Libraries said, "Our nation's small and rural libraries already faced so many challenges pre-pandemic. Those challenges have only become more urgent during the past year and a half. ARSL cannot thank Penguin Random House enough for recognizing the essential place our libraries hold in our communities, and stepping up to show real, practical support." "The past couple years have been incredibly challenging for everyone, and we know rural areas have been especially hard-hit," said Skip Dye, Senior Vice President of Sales Operations and Library Sales, Penguin Random House. "In these communities, libraries have been lifelines in countless ways, from serving as trusted sources for reliable information to providing access to important services and resources. We are honored to partner with ARSL to help elevate their impact." Forwarded on behalf of Stacey Erdman (she/her), Project Director – Digital POWRR Peer Assessment Program. * Are you a library or archives worker tasked with overseeing digital collections at your job? * Are you short staffed, or have no/little budget to dedicate to this work? * Are you overwhelmed at the scope of the issues regarding stewarding your digital materials, and aren’t sure where to get started or what steps you need to take to safeguard your collections? * Have you been curious about undertaking assessment work, but are unsure where to start? * Do you frequently feel alone, or like you have no one that you can ask for advice, or even use as a sounding board for your ideas? * Do you have questions about technology implementation, workflows, best practices, creating policies, and advocating for support within your organization? * Do you have some work time available that you can dedicate to learning about and engaging in assessment work? * Would you like to be PAID to gain this experience, and to share with your peers? If you answered yes to these questions, then the Digital POWRR Peer Assessment Program may be for you! About the Program The Digital POWRR Peer Assessment Program is a supportive, year-long, cohort-based training program for cultural heritage professionals who are interested in learning and applying digital preservation assessment procedures into their work. Participants will be paid $3000 for participating, and their institutions will receive $870 to put towards technology purchases. This program will be delivered entirely online. We have provided a preferred application period for members of our Phase 1 partner organizations, which include the Association of Hawai’i Archivists, Northwest Archivists, Inc, and Amigos Library Services. Although these applicants will receive priority in the selection process, we are now soliciting applications from individuals who are not members of these organizations. Hi Everyone, I'd like to know how other libraries handle their marketing (print newsletters, email newsletters, social media and website updates, signage, library promotional materials, and other projects). Do you have a dedicated staff member for this role? If so, is it a full time or part time (how many hours)? What is the range of pay for the individual? Do you share marketing responsibilities among other staff, without a dedicated role? How many staff share and how do you communicate/coordinate? Do you outsource your marketing?
