Upcoming Zoom Event at Brandon Twp Library: Of Icebergs and Inquiries: Michiganders on the Titanic Greetings, The Brandon Township Public Library is holding a program about Michiganders that were on the Titanic. You do not need to be a BTPL patron to attend, so please feel free to share with your staff and patrons. When the luxury ocean liner RMS Titanic went down in 1912, many Michiganders tragically lost their lives. Within a week, U.S. Senator William Alden Smith of Grand Rapids convened the U.S. inquiry into the disaster. Join us virtually to learn about the Michigan survivors and victims, as well as Senator Smith’s far-reaching quest for answers. Registration required. Tuesday, April 12th from 6:00-7:00 PM via Zoom Register here: https://www.brandonlibrary.org/ecal/#/events/DFDKBrmQaQ/instances/JtHDD7cMN… Thank You, Andrew -- *Andrew Puente* Library Associate Brandon Twp Public Library 304 South Street Ortonville, MI 48462 248-627-1460 *ENGAGE • EDUCATE • ENRICH • EMPOWER*

Speech to text software for library PCs
by Kelly Bennett 11 Apr '22

11 Apr '22

Hi all, Have any of you installed speech-to-text software on publicly available computers? Something like Dragon Naturally Speaking, which allows you to dictate documents or even navigate the web using your voice. It seems Dragon requires people to create profiles, which is not ideal for the public library setting. Does anyone use this kind of software, and how is it going? Thanks! -- kelly(a)fadl.org - Please note my new email address Kelly Bennett Head of Circulation, Ferndale Area District Library

Seeking guidance on two youth programs
by Tee Versele 11 Apr '22

11 Apr '22

Hello everyone, we have two different youth programs in our strategic plan that we are currently investigating, and I wanted to put out a call for advice, experiences, etc. from libraries who do similar programs. 1.) We are looking to start a networking group for mothers. 2.) We are hoping to coordinate a program for teen volunteers to partner with younger students and read to them. If your library has a program like this, I am looking for any information you can offer on how you started it up, how you advertise it, how it is run, etc. Thank you so much in advance! -- Tee Versele Youth Services Librarian Romulus Public Library 11121 Wayne Rd. Shifting Landscapes: Good Enough for Government Work with Amy Lerman
by Thomas Trahey 11 Apr '22

11 Apr '22

Tonight at 7pm: American government is in the midst of a reputation crisis. An overwhelming majority of citizens—Republicans and Democrats alike—hold negative perceptions of the government and believe it is wasteful, inefficient, and doing a generally poor job managing public programs and providing public services. With her book, *Good Enough for Government Work*, Amy Lerman argues that the reputation of government is itself an impediment to government’s ability to achieve the common good. In addition to improving its efficiency and effectiveness, government therefore has an equally critical task: countering the belief that the public sector is mired in incompetence. Amy E. Lerman is Professor of Public Policy and Political Science, co-director of the People Lab, and Associate Dean of the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. On April 11, Professor Lerman will explore how “good enough for government” moved from being a statement of excellence to disparagement. Professor Lerman writes widely on issues related to public opinion, political engagement, and public policy. She is the author of two books on criminal justice, The Modern Prison Paradox, and Arresting Citizenship. Her latest book, Good Enough for Government Work, explores the stereotype of government as wasteful and inefficient, and studies the consequences of these beliefs. >From the start of the pandemic to the inequities observed from the murder of George Floyd to the revelations about housing, healthcare, employment, and supply chain concerns, multiple economic topics have long been “hiding in plain view.” Shifting Landscapes considers three. In the third and final session on April 18, political scientist Paul Pierson will trace the economic and political history of the United States over the last century. He’ll show how a viable mixed economy—where both government and business each have their own roles while also working collaboratively—has long been the dominant force of America’s prosperity. This 2021-2022 series is exploring six areas of our lives that have been reshaped during the Covid-19 epidemic and the many events that have occurred in the past 2 years. Economics is the sixth and final topic in the Shifting Landscapes series. In these times of both tremendous upheaval and opportunity for transformation, Shifting Landscapes hopes exploring economic theories, past merits of a mixed economy, and how we might proceed in the future will help each of us consider how we might build an even more successful nation in the decade ahead. Events are free, live or by Zoom. Tickets are not necessary but registration is helpful. To register: mcdl.pub/sl-register. To simply join the Zoom presentation, go to http://mcdl.pub/SL-zoom. The link will be live about 6:45 pm on the day of the presentation. Millage Interviews
by Adrianne Schinkai 10 Apr '22

10 Apr '22

Good afternoon everyone, I am currently putting together a presentation about millages for public libraries. I am wondering if any current Directors, Librarians, or Staff who have worked on one recently would be willing to speak with me via email, text, or chat about the process and how it worked out for your library. I would like to conduct interviews during the evenings between tomorrow and Wednesday. I would like to do it this way (as opposed to a phone call) so I have a transcript to work from. Please email me at amschinkai(a)gmail.com if you are interested in helping. Thank you all in advance for your help! -- *Adrianne M.
