[https://s3.amazonaws.com/oasis-prod01-unlayer/1654724320543-arsl22-emailhea…] About #ARSL2022 When: September 14-17, 2022 Where: Chattanooga Convention Center<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Farsl.membe…>, Chattanooga, TN Early Bird registration<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Farsl.membe…> is now open through July 26! #ARSL2022 is THE conference for rural and small libraries. Our conference planners and presenters understand the constraints of shoestring budgets, small spaces, and limited staffing within small and rural libraries, as well as the unique opportunities for innovation and collaboration. Our conference is packed full of information you can take right back to your library-no scaling down required. Our conference theme is "Connecting at the Crossroads: On Track to Real Change." Our paths will converge this fall in Chattanooga, a city situated at the crossroads of highways, historic railroads, and the Tennessee River. Looking back at where we've come from, we will lay tracks toward where we want to be. We'll ask ourselves who we are, what we value, and what changes small and large we can bring back to our libraries. Together, we can work toward change that is real, sustainable, and equitable. Register today!<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Farsl.membe…> Conference Highlights * Networking opportunities to encourage you to make meaningful, lasting connections, including Dine-Arounds, receptions, the Crossroads Lunch, topic-specific meetups, and the app with an attendee social network. * 80+ sessions from experts and innovators in small and rural libraries across the country. * Virtual content available to all attendees to watch on demand through mid-December. * Preconference Workshops to give a deeper dive into topics of grant writing, social wellbeing, tough conversations, building projects, and advocacy. * Extracurricular activities to get you out exploring Chattanooga with new friends. * User-friendly app to help you navigate the conference with ease, build your schedule, find new connections, participate in community discussions, enter challenges to win prizes, and so much more. * Keynote events featuring a panel on book challenges and more exciting speakers to be announced soon! * Five meals included in your registration, plus refreshment breaks and receptions. * Exhibit Hall packed full of library-related vendors offering giveaways, discounts, and exclusive opportunities to conference attendees. About ARSL As the premier organization representing rural and small libraries, ARSL recognizes the uniqueness of small and rural libraries and is committed to providing an environment that encourages excellence within this community of practice, supporting their goals of service and speaking on behalf of this important constituency. ARSL is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. When you register for the conference, you'll have the opportunity to join ARSL. Memberships begin at $20 per year. Members enjoy a discount of $75-150 off conference registration fees, in addition to year-round opportunities for networking, professional development, the member e-list, and more. Learn more about membership.<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Farsl.membe…> Hear It from Our Community "If I only go to one conference a year, I go to ARSL. The sessions are directly applicable to small and rural libraries. It's inspiring to be around others who know exactly what you're experiencing and can provide practical advice and encouragement." - 2021 Conference Attendee "Turns out not only are small and rural libraries the best, but so is their annual conference! Our service areas may be smaller, but not our hearts, talents, work-ethics, and professionalism. This is the #1 conference to attend, for any size library." - Elektra Greer, Nederland Community Library, CO "I left the ARSL conference feeling rejuvenated! The pandemic has drained all of us, but spending time with excited librarians who want to make their communities the best they can be, made me remember why I love this profession." - Amanda Doherty, Mt. Pulaski Public Library District, IL "A life-changing opportunity! I felt like I was in college again - learning from lectures and meeting great new people every few minutes!" - Jake Wyrzykowski, Phillips Public Library, WI "I love the smart and scrappy ethic of this community. The great brains and huge hearts we get to meet when we are together are such an inspiration!" - 2021 Conference Attendee "ARSL continues to be the can't-miss conference for the many small and rural libraries whose big-hearted staff need tailored programs and the chance to chat with each other." - James LaRue, Garfield County Libraries, CO "I attended my very first ARSL conference 5 or 6 years ago and I remember feeling at home! I manage two very small, rural libraries, and most conferences are geared toward much larger, more urban libraries and it is hard to incorporate a lot of what you learn or hear about because it simply won't apply or you can't afford it in your library. ARSL is the place for those who work in and manage small and rural libraries!" - 2021 Conference Attendee "Every single person that I met, whether library staff or ARSL employees, had a huge smile and were welcoming and VERY open to sharing their knowledge. It was incredible to see just how far reaching ARSL is and how many people they are able to support through their fundraising and services. Having little knowledge of them prior to the conference, I will definitely be joining and look forward to helping with their cause in the future." - Stephanie Carvell, Hoke County Public Library, NC [https://s3.amazonaws.com/oasis-prod01-unlayer/1658265694124-ARSL22+Social+M…] [Image] Contact Info: The Association for Rural & Small Libraries PO BOX 33731, Seattle, WA 98133 (206) 453-3579 (call/text) info(a)arsl.org<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Farsl.membe…> Connect with Us: Facebook <https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Farsl.membe…> Twitter <https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Farsl.membe…> LinkedIn <https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Farsl.membe…> The Association for Rural & Small Libraries * PO Box 33731, Seattle, Washington 98133, United States * 206-453-3579<tel:206-453-3579> [Powered by MemberClicks]<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.member…> ________________________________ The Association for Rural & Small Libraries * PO Box 33731, Seattle, Washington 98133, United States * 206-453-3579<tel:206-453-3579>

Library Futures: eBook Policy Statement and More
by Jim Flury 20 Jul '22

20 Jul '22

Good Morning, Over the past couple of years there have been bills introduced in several state legislatures with regards to eBook access and equity for libraries. The Maryland bill advanced the furthest; it was actually signed into law in early 2022 but was quickly appealed by the AAP, determined to be unconstitutional, and hence overturned. Thought I would share the attached Library Futures policy paper to give everyone a summary of what the issues are, as well as what action has been taken in which state legislatures with regards to this. There has also been some activity on the federal level. Attached is a copy of a November 18, 2021 letter from Senator Ron Wyden and Representative Anna Eshoo to B&T CEO Amandeep Kochar. All of the CEO's of the big library eBook aggregators (OverDrive, CloudLibrary, etc.) were sent a copy of the same letter. Prior to that, the CEO's of the "Big Five" publishing companies were asked by Wyden/Eshoo to submit answers to similar questions in a September 23, 2021 letter, linked below. [ https://www.finance.senate.gov/chairmans-news/wyden-eshoo-press-big-five-pu… | https://www.finance.senate.gov/chairmans-news/wyden-eshoo-press-big-five-pu… ] I've not seen the replies from either the eBook aggregator or publisher CEO's to the Wyden/Eshoo requests for information. In fact, the past few years have pushed us, and in some cases made us scramble, to discover and experiment with new technologies and tools, to train our staff and community, and to look for new ways of doing our core activities. This presentation introduces emerging technology trends and shows how those trends are reshaping library services. Examples are provided of how to incorporate and adapt these evolving trends into libraries. Learn what trends to look for, find out the difference between a technology trend and a fad, and get ideas on how your library can respond to technologies as they emerge. Bridgman Library had for the 2nd time the fabulous Mary Spencer, with our latest presentation she demonstrated Summer Salads. The food looked so delicious and her direction was so easy to follow it would make even the most inept cook impressed with themselves. Mary has vast knowledge and experience, you will not be sorry for booking her for your future virtual program. She is only doing limited programs at the present time. Her website is: http://www.tasteacooksplace.net/ *Denise O. Malevitis* *Bridgman Public Library* *Inter Library Loan Department* *& Program Coordinator*
