Re: [Michlib-l] Library of Things - requests for input
by Dominic McLaughlin 25 Aug '22

25 Aug '22

Good afternoon, everyone. We're looking into the possibility of a Library of Things collection. Reports I have read over the years referred to seed libraries, tools, kitchen odds and ends (e.g. cake pans), some consumer tech (e.g. VHS-to-DVD converters), board games, and other things. We are reaching out to get evaluations of several aspects: different types of items for checkout, what items are "best-sellers", pros and cons, any "messy" aspects (e.g. cleaning the library-issued cake pans upon their return by patrons or keeping track of all game pieces in a circulating board game). Feel free to email me directly (dominic@romeodistrictlibrary); I would be happy to share a compilation after some time of gathering any replies. Most sincerely, Dominic McLaughlin Technology Services Librarian/Adult Services Romeo District Library

Circulating Technology
by Amy Sturgeon 25 Aug '22

25 Aug '22

Hi All, I am compiling a list of the pros and cons of circulating electronics (specifically Nintendo Switch and Oculus/Meta Quest). We are not doing this yet but we have opened the discussion to possibly make them available for checkout in the future. I'm looking for libraries who have circulated these types of things. What are your experiences, good and bad? Any advice or tips? After I compile it I can share my list with anyone else who is interested as well. Thanks in advance! Hello everyone, We're starting to plan next year's Summer Reading Program, and we're looking for recommendations for musical performers for children. I did check the No Reservation Recommendations, and didn't see anything for musical programming. Do you have anyone you loved? Anyone you hated? We'd love to hear about it! I can compile responses and share to the list. We appreciate your help! FOIA of Employee Information
by Katelin Smith 24 Aug '22

24 Aug '22

Hello, everyone, Recently, our library received a FOIA from an organization outside our state requesting information on our union-represented employees. * First name; * Middle name; * Last name; * Date of Birth/Birth year; * Gender; * Work email address; * Job Title; * Worksite location; * Worksite address; and, * Hire Date. We understand that by law, we are required to give information. Still, some of it is more personal than others, such as middle name and gender, and several staff whose data would be included do not feel comfortable sharing it. Have other libraries experienced this, and if so, what did you do? Our director is reaching out to her contacts but she requested that I reach out as well to cast the widest net possible for information and insight. Thanks, Katelin __________________________________________________ Katelin Smith (she/her/hers, they/them/theirs) Adult Services Librarian | Homebound Coordinator William P. by Mick Howey 24 Aug '22

24 Aug '22

Hello Michlib-l, Please join us at 7:00 PM on Monday, August 29, 2022 for the Shipwreck Tales of Georgia Bay event. In 2018, Cris Kohl & Joan Forsberg’s dive team located two famous shipwrecks, J.H. Jones & Manasoo, in Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay. The Manasoo discovery went viral due to the wreck’s unique characteristics, such as an intact pilot house and a 1927 automobile. Cris & Joan will discuss and show video footage of their important and exciting finds. Numerous other Georgian Bay shipwrecks, such as the fabled Griffin, will be highlighted in this presentation. Cris Kohl & Joan Forsberg are maritime historians, divers, videographers, shipwreck hunters, speakers and the authors of numerous books on the Great Lakes. Their book The Christmas Tree Ship is now available as an audiobook and they are currently writing a new book. Tap https://tinyurl.com/sdeumwmk to register. This is a virtual event. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link Hope to see you there! Mick Howey, MLIS Adult Services Librarian Baldwin Public Library 300 West Merrill Street Birmingham, MI 48009 (248) 554-4649

Congratulations to the following Michigan public libraries that applied and were selected to host digital literacy workshops as part of the PLA Digital Literacy Workshop Incentive. * Adrian District Library * Coloma Public Library * Hastings Public Library * Menominee County Library * Ray Township Public Library * Spring Lake District Library * Thomas E. Fleschner Memorial Library Read more about the program online https://www.ala.org/pla/initiatives/digitalliteracy/incentive Find the ALA Press Release about the project https://www.ala.org/news/press-releases/2022/08/pla-awards-11-million-160-p… Quote from the ALA press release: "With over $1 million in contributions from AT&T, the Public Library Association (PLA) has selected 160 public libraries to host digital literacy workshops across the country. The PLA Digital Literacy Workshop Incentive, supported by AT&T<http://www.ala.org/pla/initiatives/digitalliteracy/incentive>, is designed to support public libraries in their efforts to boost digital skills for all members of their communities. The workshops leverage online digital literacy courses, created by PLA in collaboration with AT&T, that are available to anyone through DigitalLearn.org<https://www.digitallearn.org/> and AT&T ScreenReady(r). DigitalLearn.org<https://screenready.att.com/digital-literacy/> online courses and training materials were developed with and for library staff and their patrons. The site's digital literacy offerings cover everything from technology basics to how to avoid online scams. >From small towns to big cities, funded libraries' efforts will be specific to each community's unique needs. Just a few examples of how funds will be used are: creating new or expanding digital literacy education; hosting digital literacy workshops using the new and updated course materials; and promoting the courses and workshops with patrons and in the community." sdw Shannon White Library Development Manager Library of Michigan, 702 W.
