Transforming Teen Services - YALSA Need ideas for teen programming? Come explore Youth Voice & Choice at this workshop via a framework for teen services called Connected Learning (CL) that uses the building blocks of teen interests, relationships with peers and caring adults and opportunities (from college and career to leadership and civic engagement). This workshop will also cover the basics of Computational Thinking (CT), which is a problem-solving framework, not coding or computer science -- and no technology is required! This is a great way for library staff who are less comfortable with tech to build STEM programs. This workshop is participatory & hands-on, and will help participants scaffold knowledge they may already have about CL and CT and use it to recognize the ways in which CT supports CL. Free and In-Person, 10am-5pm ET at the three following locations: Monday, November 14th at Bloomfield Township Public Library<https://libraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/even…>, Tuesday, November 15th at KDL's Kentwood Branch<https://libraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/even…>, or Thursday, November 17th at Otsego County Library<https://libraryofmichigan.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/libraryofmichigan/even…> Lunch will be included. {Seeking Projects for U-M Students!} Do you have a system or dynamic website that could be more user-friendly?
by Kristin Fontichiaro 05 Nov '22

05 Nov '22

*Posted on behalf of the U-M School of Information's Engaged Learning Office:I’m excited to share with you an opportunity for University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI) students to help make your internal system or dynamic website more user-friendly by doing user testing and employing other methods to provide recommendations for improvement. If this is of interest, I invite you to submit a project idea <https://umich-dot-yamm-track.appspot.com/2WR4RlbjFI9VuS9hqB5FRfRV593BEDDmKY…> as soon as possible, and ideally by November 11th, for students to work on this winter term (January through April 2023). Please note that there is no cost to host a project.--------------Overview:Students in the course SI 622: Needs Assessment and Usability Evaluation <https://umich-dot-yamm-track.appspot.com/2uj40pnObFVjSpSiIvJpVFRmrgpV_jEaN7…> will evaluate how well the user experience of your product or system meets the needs of its users by using specific methods to identify areas where the product or system succeeds, and where improvements can be made to help users achieve their goals.Client benefits: - Clients receive a series of reports, recommendations, and analyses- Methods clients will benefit from include: heuristic evaluation, usability testing, competitive analysis, surveying, and an interview-based study - A previous client in this course shared the following:- “The student team presented an overview of what seemed to be working and what could be improved on within the website, with achievable follow-up steps. We learned that our resources can sometimes be hidden or not easily navigable, and have begun to work on some of the students’ proposed solutions. The findings that came out of the project will help the office create a more navigable site.”Clients should be prepared to: - Meet weekly with students- Give feedback on the reports shared throughout the semester- Connect students with users for user interviews (6-7 people), a survey (50 people), and user testing (6-7 people). Please note that these numbers may change - Provide a contact within your organization who understands UX and can work with the students directly (helpful but not mandatory)- Get the students access to whatever data, systems, or resources are necessary to complete the project. Please note that, while there is no cost to host a project, any access or other fees are the responsibility of the clientUpon completing the project idea form, a team member will follow up within a week to invite you to tell us more about the idea or request a full proposal. Once a full proposal is submitted, we will work with you to scope the project for a specific course until it is handed over to a student team. Please note that while we do our best to match all projects to a team, some won’t be selected. You can find other ways to engage with our students, such as visiting as a speaker or providing mentorship, at our website here <https://umich-dot-yamm-track.appspot.com/2MYE4_vgAfSfPuyP6Cf5HNuYubH_1cmeSG…>. Santa

Hello, Our library will be moving to a temporary location in December and we will not be having our regular Santa visit. We are sad about this, but Santa understands! Note that, in 2021, we were able to provide social distancing in a way that pleased our parents, as you can see in the photo. Jim Sawyer is such a GREAT Santa that I wanted to recommend him to anyone in Southeast Michigan who would like to offer such a program in December, this year or next! (Note: He is from Canton.)
