GetSetUp Online Classes for Older Adults

In November of 2021 the Library of Michigan began promoting its partnership with MDHHS to offer virtual classes from GetSetUp to older adults in Michigan. This resource allows public libraries to save time and staff resources by making available quality online classes to older adults in your community. You can read more about the program in the several emails below about GetSetUp. As virtual classes became the way programming could be maintained during Covid shutdowns LM sought out solutions to help support public libraries and staff that had many demands on their time for continuing services. The GetSetUp program is currently provided at no cost through the MDHHS/LM partnership until the fall of 2023. GetSetUp virtual classes that can be viewed at home, library, or as part of a coordinated library program, offer a wide variety of topics such as digital literacy, cooking, health, aging in place, financial planning, and more. The partnership with MDHHS’s Behavioral and Physical Health and Aging Services Administration has been so effective that the state is expanding free access to the program through 2023 and increasing access through an agreement with the Library of Michigan and its 400 branches around the state. Library patrons can access GetSetUp from public access computers, or they can log on through their library’s website and direct questions to library staff. GetSetUp’s initial partnership with MDHHS reduced isolation and loneliness by making its services available to the 2.4 million older adults in Michigan. That included reaching 108,000 older adult learners in the first year who enjoyed classes and discussions on a variety of topics such as healthy aging, fitness, photography, technology and mental well-being. GetSetUp offers real-time, engaging learning experiences that range from teaching everyday technical skills to enrichment-focused courses taught by expert instructors. Since starting the partnership with Michigan in 2020, GetSetUp has expanded to more than 4,500 classes. It offers classes 24 hours per day in languages such as English, Spanish, Hindi and Mandarin, with instructors and participants from all over the world. Its custom-designed video platform was made specifically for older adults to easily learn new skills and connect with a trusted community. “With over 40% of Michigan older adults living alone across a diverse geography and in rural areas, social isolation and loneliness are critical problems we are taking proactive steps to address,” said Farah Hanley, chief deputy director for health at MDHHS. “GetSetUp is a key part of our solution, helping older adults overcome their fears and reluctance to learn technology, providing safe socialization opportunities, and creating a sense of purpose through learning that improves mood and mental health,” Hanley said. “We are excited to extend our partnership with GetSetUp through 2023.” GetSetUp’s model of community-based classes taught by experts – who are older adults themselves – has helped older adults become more comfortable with technology so they can now access state-provided services and manage their own health and wellness. They’ve also explored their creative sides and shared their knowledge with others. Michigan community members who are participating are spending on average two to 10 hours a week on GetSetUp. Dozens of Michiganders have become active ambassadors who host their own interest groups on topics that matter to them, including Dealing with Diabetes, Meatless Recipes and more. Several Michiganders have even become paid guides on the platform, serving as a model and inspiration for expanding peoples’ economic opportunities. A list of available programs is included in Karina's email below. Please note that I have neither seen nor vetted any of the programs. How about a holiday season program (or, Holiday in July?) "History of Pere Marquette 1225, and its involvement in "The Polar Express", followed by a showing of the movie itself? The latter of course is dependent on two things: 1. Your library has a public performance license to show movies from either [ https://www.swank.com/movie-licensing-usa | https://www.swank.com/movie-licensing-usa ] (discounted bulk license might be available through your library cooperative; TLN has such an agreement) or [ https://www.mplc.org/ | https://www.mplc.org/ ] and 2. Michigan will always be known as the automobile capital of the world, but the Great Lakes State boasts a similarly rich heritage in the development of boat building in America. By the late nineteenth century, Michigan had emerged as the industry’s hub, drawing together the most talented designers, builders, and engine makers to produce some of the fastest and most innovative boats ever created. Within decades, gifted Michigan entrepreneurs like Christopher Columbus Smith, John L. Hacker, and Gar Wood had established some of the nation’s top boat brands and brought the prospect of boat ownership within reach for American consumers from all ranges of income. More than just revolutionizing recreational boating, Michigan boat builders also left their mark on history—from developing the speedy runabouts favored by illicit rum-runners during the Prohibition era to creating the landing craft that carried Allied forces to shores in Europe and the Pacific in WWII. Muskegon Area District Library - New Director Announcement

Hi Everyone, We are excited to share that our new Director, Ron Suszek, started at the Muskegon Area District Library on Monday, June 20th! He is not new to Michigan but has been out of the area for the past several years. Please help us welcome him back and congratulate him on his new role. New Library Director Selected at Muskegon Area District Library MUSKEGON, MI, May 17, 2022 - The Board of Trustees of the Muskegon Area District Library is pleased to announce the selection of Ron L. Suszek, II as the new MADL Library Director. He will join MADL June 20, 2022. Suszek has extensive experience working in public libraries, including a seventeen-year career in leadership positions. He has managed a wide range of services including public programming, technology, collection development and logistics. Most recently, he served as Library Services Administrator with the San Antonio Public Library, (SAPL) in San Antonio, Texas. At SAPL, he worked to overhaul the digital experience for library users by developing services and collections to meet the needs of a growing and culturally diverse community of nearly two million. He was actively involved in San Antonio's digital inclusion network and worked to provide essential access to support digital literacy efforts in one of the nation's least connected cities. Prior to his five-year service with SAPL, he worked at Grace A. Dow Memorial Library in Midland, Michigan for ten years. The selection of Mr. Suszek concludes a six-month nation-wide search and several Board Special Meetings to interview highly qualified candidates. "Mr. Suszek has extensive experience initiating and sustaining partnerships with community organizations and has been successful in raising stakeholders' awareness of the library, its employees, and services as well as the importance of funding and supporting its mission," says Doug Hughes, Chair, MADL Board of Trustees. "I am excited to be a part of the Muskegon Area District Library, working with the dedicated people at MADL who serve the community in such meaningful and transformative ways," says Suszek.
