Reference Desk Statistics

Greetings Michigan Libraries, We are currently using old-fashioned pen and paper to track statistics for reference desk interactions. I've seen digital products used for this purpose in the past, but searching now, every reference I'm coming up with is from 10-12 years ago. If you have a program or platform to track your statistics digitally, what are you using? Rural Libraries - Share a BookPage Subscription

Hello everyone, Richland Community Library is considering renewing our annual BookPage subscription (50 copies/month), and we wanted to reach out to see if any rural libraries AND RIDES participants might be interested in sharing the cost. In the past, we've noticed that we end up with 10-20 unused issues each month. Rather than letting them go to waste, we thought this could be a great opportunity for smaller libraries to receive BookPage copies at a reduced cost while helping us make the most of the subscription. Details: * Annual subscription cost: $420 for 50 monthly copies * RCL is happy to cover the upfront cost * Participating library can reimburse us for their portion by check * We can easily send your monthly copies through RIDES * If we have two other interested libraries, we could opt for the 100 copies/year subscription for $756 and split the cost three ways. Tibetan Bowls and Gongs have been used for thousands of years to assist people into deep meditative states that can be difficult to reach on their own. This will reduce your stress levels and help you to get back to that place of stillness and calm. All you have to do is just lay there and let the magic of the bowls and gongs guide you. Does your library have guidelines around scams?

Hello! My name is Annaka and I am a public services librarian at the Herrick District Library in Holland, MI. Over the past several years, we have noticed an increase in scam-related reference questions, where a patron either a) asks library staff whether or not something that they have encountered online is a scam or b) has come to the library for technological assistance while in the process of being scammed. (For example, an older patron came to us looking for help installing WhatsApp on his phone after a stranger he met on Facebook told him to do so; one of the hallmarks of digital scams is moving the victim to an encrypted messaging app<https://fightcybercrime.org/blog/why-do-scammers-love-telegram-whatsapp/>.) While it is our general practice not to dispense legal or financial advice to patrons, we want to both avoid complicity in scam behaviors and see educating the public about this kind of misinformation as part of our library's mission. We have hosted anti-scam programs both on our own and with our county sheriff's office, but we are interested in creating a policy/guidelines for staff when they find themselves in this situation at the information desk. Our current MO is usually to advise the patron that we believe that they are in a fraught situation and to consult their bank (which is legally obligated to refuse service if their customer is being scammed) before proceeding if it seems that money is already involved. We find, however, that patrons are often reluctant to take our advice or that we are entering into the situation before it's gotten to that point. My questions are: * Have you noticed an increase in these sorts of inquiries at your library? * Do you have any official/written policy or more informal guideline that address these issues? * Is there ever a point at which you refuse service, either if you suspect you are encountering a scam in progress or once it becomes obvious that you are? If you have a moment to answer any of the above questions or if you have any more resources about this issue in libraries specifically that you don't mind sending along, I'd really appreciate it. Executive Director - Northland Public Library (PA) Northland Public Library<https://www.northlandlibrary.org/> (PA) Board of Directors is seeking a communicative and collaborative leader to become the next Executive Director. Reporting to an Authority Board of Directors representing five separate supporting municipalities, this individual will be a consensus builder, library advocate, and will present visionary executive functions while maintaining a strong presence and understanding of the day-to-day operations of a single 35,600 square foot location. With a large and talented staff of 48.02 FTE, the library circulates more physical items than any other Library in Allegheny County, eclipsing 1 million items in 2024. The Executive Director will lead Northland Public Library into the next era of community-driven success as it continues to grow and support the region. Northland Public Library was certified as a KultureCity Sensory Inclusive Venue in 2025 through a grant from the Allegheny County Library Association and has been awarded other state and local grants to provide funding support for a major building renovation and upgrades. The library serves both North Allegheny and North Hills school districts, and benefits from the support of an established and re-energized Library Foundation.
