Hello - the Library of Michigan has free materials we are offering to the library community. To take advantage of this opportunity, see the information below and the attached spreadsheet. Feel free to forward this message to other library groups or listservs within Michigan. Content and condition The titles listed are extra copies of fiction and non-fiction (hard and soft cover) books submitted to the Michigan Notable Books program over the last year and either contain Michigan content and/or were written by a Michigan author. Also available are new and used Michigan government documents (on the second sheet of the document), items weeded from our collections, and donated materials we cannot use. Most of the non-MNB items are old library books and come with library markings/stickers, but are otherwise in the condition noted on the spreadsheet. If you'd like to only consider the newer books, you can either sort by condition or publication year. How to request Please submit requests by email to baconb1(a)michigan.gov<mailto:baconb1@michigan.gov> . If you are local or passing through, you are welcome to schedule a time to select and claim materials on-site from 9am-5pm, Mon.-Fri. Email baconb1(a)michigan.gov<mailto:baconb1@michigan.gov> if you want to schedule a visit. Email requests are handled on a first-come basis by date and time. Some, or all requested materials may no longer be available at the point we receive your email. It may take over a month to process the requests, depending on staff time and availability of RIDES totes. I will send you an email when I am able to ship the materials to you. Shipping We prefer to ship items via RIDES. If you are not in the RIDES system, we can ship via UPS and we will cover the cost of shipment. Email requests must include the title as noted on the spreadsheet, how many copies you want (if applicable), RIDES code or a delivery address (street address only, no P.O. box), contact name, phone number and email address. Deadline If you are interested in any of these materials, please respond to this email no later than August 14th, 2023. Materials will be shipped as soon as time and resources allow. Rock Snakes

Has anyone else's outdoor painted rock snake gone missing while the library was closed? We had a 30 rock long snake made at a summer reading event and today all that is left is the head and two rocks. Just wondering if this is localized vandalism or a "thing." Thanks! Trustee Training Workshop in September

PLEASE SHARE WITH YOUR BOARDS As this year's Chair of the UPRLC Conference, I would like to invite you to attend a very special program here in the Upper Peninsula. On September 13th, Clare Membiela will be holding a Trustee Training workshop at the Bayliss Public Library, part of the Superior District Library, in Sault Ste Marie, for 3pm-5pm. This half-day pre-session begins with lunch from Wicked Sister, provided by the Bayliss Friends of the Library, followed by the UPRLC Board meeting. At two o'clock, we will split into two sessions. One will be geared towards Trustee Training with Clare. The other will be a Team-Building workshop with Scott Garrison from MCLS. While this is a UPRLC Conference, non-members are also invited to attend. Programming - how much is too much?

Hi all, Do you have a method for figuring out how many programs you are targeting in a certain period of time? We’re having a cheerful(ish) debate on our staff regarding how much programming is too much… and it seems to me that this all falls back on how many staff hours we have to devote to programming. Drop Box Designs

Hi all! My board is bored with how plain our outside return box is. It blends into our building and we have some patrons who don't realize it's there. We were hoping to open up a contest to the community, maybe contact the local college and high school art departments, too. Whichever design is chosen will be submitted to the graphic design shop across the street from us, and they'd be able to print out a wrap that "should last forever." I'm excited for the idea to get the community involved in the library, but I'm not sure how to run a contest like this, as I haven't done one before. So for those of you who have had art contests for your library, what was your process? Were there any prizes for the winners? Did you pay the artist for their design? zv-341 error on a catalogued book
