iPads, AWEs, or something else?

Hello Everyone! We are currently looking at options for replacing our youth iPads. Currently, we have three iPads with apps selected for up to age 6 and three with apps selected for ages 6 and older. We're hoping to find a way to still offer quality activities but in a way that requires less staff time to manage (between updates, needing to reset them because kids have tried to bypass passcodes, etc, they're a lot). We've been considering returning to AWEs and were wondering what other libraries experiences have been recently. We're considering both the tablets and the computers (we like the idea of offering both touch screen tablets and mouse and keyboard use on a computer). If you're using something other than iPads, I'd love to hear what you're using, your experiences with the company, and if you'd recommend them! Thank you! Request for Assistance: Peg Wall System Measurement

We are in search of a fellow Michigan library that may possess the Bright Beginnings(r) STEAM Floor-Standing Peg Wall System (https://www.demco.com/steam-floor-standing-peg-wall-accessories) and would be willing to provide us with specific measurements. Our library features a custom made peg wall in the children's section, and we are interested in expanding our collection of accessories for this system. Unfortunately, we have encountered challenges in obtaining the necessary peg measurements from Demco or the manufacturer. If your library happens to have the same peg wall system, we kindly request your assistance in measuring either the diameter of the pegs or the hole dimensions. Thank you in advance for your help! MLA Conference

Good Morning, I just wanted to say thank you to the MLA team for organizing a great conference. This was my first in-person MLA conference since the last time it was held in Novi, whenever that was. The hotel and its facilities were excellent. Since we, TLN/MAP that is, had a booth at the conference I only had a chance to attend one program, which had something to do with MAP😆 It was a great program, and I hope those who were there learned more about this now 10 year old statewide initiative [ https://miactivitypass.org/ | https://miactivitypass.org/ ] (16 years if you count the first, metro Detroit only, edition of MAP). The only thing missing at the conference was Elvis. Guess I needed to roam around town more... It was good to see many colleagues again, and to talk with others I've corresponded with but had never had a chance to meet in person. Solvay Public Library Comic Con Submitted by Brian Rowlands, Library Manager, Solvay Public Library On Monday, July 31, Solvay Public Library held the first ever Library Comic Con with the help of Funky Town Comics & Vinyl. It was a night of free comics, cosplay, music with DJ Dretronix, a Mario Kart tournament and special guest artist Christopher Brunner. Over one hundred kids joined in for the nerdy fun and were given free tickets to "buy" different comics that were brought by Funky Town Comics & Vinyl or posters or drawings from Christopher Brunner. Our Mario Kart tournament winner was given a free family pass to Retro GameCon 2023, so everyone who came got to experience a mini comic con with for absolutely free. We also had a Graphic Novel Book Drive and dozens of graphic novels were donated to Solvay Library to put into our collection or hand out as Summer Reading Prizes. We hope to have this event annually and grow each year! Description of Reference and Readers’ Advisory Duties: · Answer questions at the public information desks in the Youth, Adult, and Teen departments. · Help visitors search for materials in the online catalog and locate items in the library. · Provide technology assistance to visitors at our public computers and on their personal devices. · Promote and provide troubleshooting for our digital services, including Libby, Hoopla, and Kanopy. · Assist librarians as needed in maintaining library collections. · Facilitate an atmosphere of learning and discovery by understanding and implementing the library’s policies and procedures. Requirements: · Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. · Must be available to work 12-20 hours /week in a mix of day, evening, and weekend shifts. · Must be available to work 1-2 evenings /week between Monday and Thursday. · Requires a minimum commitment of 6 months or one semester (as applicable), with a potential extension of the position up to a maximum of two years. Desired Qualifications: · Excellent customer service skills and a dedication to public service. · Strong online searching and information evaluation skills. · Comfortable with technology: has a working familiarity with PCs, printing, and a variety of personal digital devices. · Ability to communicate effectively and to work collaboratively. · Able to problem solve, alone or through collaboration with others. · Willing to exercise initiative and sound independent judgment. · Comfortable working with a variety of age groups.
