Creating a Library of Things Bookable Collection-Questions!

Our library has some giant outdoor games in our Library of Things collection which are very popular with our patrons. A number of patrons have said that they would like to be able to book these items for specific events instead of going on a waitlist and hoping they get them at the right time. For those of you who have a Library of Things bookable collection, we have some questions about creating a booking system: How does your booking system work? Do you offer this via your ILS, from a third party vendor, or did you create your own system? Do you purchase duplicate things for your booking collection or did you move your existing things to the bookable collection (no longer available for general requests without a bookable time) Is there any other advice you have/ptifalls to avoid? Climate mitigation, or the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, was addressed in our previous article, “Getting Started with Climate Action Planning.” The next area, adaptation, requires strategies that enable personal, institutional, and community-wide preparation and adjustment in the face of the likely impacts of climate change on our local geography. We can no longer simply focus on our hopes that efforts will reduce the impacts of climate change on the future. Even if we did everything right to reduce GHG emissions in the next seven years, we will still experience increasingly severe weather patterns, heat waves, and systemic impacts on food systems, flood plains, and sea levels for the next three decades. Confronting the reality of the damage that has been done to the climate and having a realistic idea of what the local impacts of climate change is an essential component to future-proofing your library. Hello, library directors! New LM/UMSI project is now taking applications!

If you're a public library director in Michigan, this email is for you! In May 2023, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization formally ended COVID-19 as a global health emergency, formally ending three years of unprecedented changes to public libraries. What comes next for us? How do we reconnect with community members so we can better attune our services, maintain our foundational ideals in a changed landscape, tell more compelling stories of libraries’ access and impact, communicate more effectively with others, and bring staff along as we forge a “new normal” for our communities? Join the Library of Michigan and the University of MIchigan School of Information (UMSI) as we explore these and other questions in this free program for Michigan public library directors. We will select *100 Michigan public library directors* based on application <https://libacad.sites.uofmhosting.net/apply/> to join us for monthly meetings from *January - December 2024. *Participants will be divided into 25-member cohorts *based on library class size* for monthly meetings over Zoom. Each session <https://libacad.sites.uofmhosting.net/schedule/> focuses on a different angle of libraries’ “new normal” and features speakers from the field, communication and strategic experts, targeted activities, and open conversation. Additionally, each participant will receive a customized training session with communications experts from Hennes Communications, who will prepare them to better respond to challenging and difficult conversations, and can take advantage of a short community survey with analysis by UMSI. At the end of 12 months, each participant will share advice and celebrate growth by participating in a short presentation at either a *free face-to-face conference at the Library of Michigan (March 21, 2025)* or a *free virtual conference (April 25, 2025)*, where they’ll mingle and learn with those from the other cohorts. Cash Register Replacement

Even though Canton Public Library has gone fine free, we still have a need to collect cash and credit card payments. Our old register has exceeded its useful life and is in need of replacement. I am interested in hearing what other libraries have done in this situation. Did you replace your register with a newer model or changeover to a new (POS) system?
