Ideas for Bingo Program
by Anna Merritt 25 Apr '24

25 Apr '24

Hello All, Our library has recently partnered with a local non-profit that assists with teens & adults with developmental disabilities. We plan on hosting a monthly BINGO program. I am looking for help in a catchy name for the event and ideas on how to properly word the marketing, so that it is clear as to who the program is targeted towards. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :) Anna Merritt (she/her) Assistant Director / Interloan Specialist Richland Community Library 8951 Park Street Richland, MI 49083 (269) 629-9085 ZV283 https://www.richlandlibrary.org/ -- This message has been scanned by E.F.A. Janie Paul author talk
by Stair Library 25 Apr '24

25 Apr '24

Good morning! If you're looking for something to do and happen to be in the neighborhood (Ha!...Ohio border southwest of Adrian) Thursday, May 2, at 6 p.m., come bop in to Stair District Library in Morenci for a visit with Michigan Notable Book author Janie Paul, a former art professor at the University of Michigan and the senior curator and co-founder of the Exhibitions of Artists in Michigan Prisons. She'll be speaking at the library about her incredibly interesting book, *Making Art in Prison: Survival and Resistance*, which features photos of art created by incarcerated people accompanied by their essays. (Heck, make Morenci your destination! We know you're not likely to "happen to be in the neighborhood!" Or, plan to visit one of the other four libraries hosting Janie Paul as part of the wonderful Michigan Notable Books program sponsored by the Library of Michigan, the Library of Michigan Foundation and Michigan Humanities: Center Line, Bellaire, Harrison, and Richland. Click on "May Dates, Authors, and Locations" at this link: https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/public/mnb/current-michigan-nota… ) Janie Paul's talk and slide show will be followed by a Q&A session, book sales and signing, and hearty refreshments. See flyer attached. Also featured: an art exhibit featuring works from incarcerated people from Janie Paul's art collection as well as works from local residents' collections, a display of other coffee table books, and other 2024 Michigan Notable Books. Art Studio Hours have ended, but ask to try out art supplies from our Art Cart during regular library hours. Thanks, Colleen Colleen Leddy, Director Stair District Library 228 W. Help Identifying Book!
by Erin Luetz 24 Apr '24

24 Apr '24

Hello, Collective Brain! I need some help trying to identify a book for a patron. We know that it is either YA or Adult Fiction and have a sketch based on the patron's recollection of the cover (attached below), but that's about it. The patron doesn't remember the author, title, or much about the content beyond that dragons played a heavy role in the plot. If anyone has any ideas as to what it could be, I'd love to hear them! I thought perhaps it was something by Anne McCaffrey, but haven't found a match for the illustration provided. Invocation
by Barbara Gordon 24 Apr '24

24 Apr '24

Hello All, I am interested in learning whether libraries have had an invocation at the start of a groundbreaking or ribbon-cutting ceremony. We have an upcoming event and the Board is looking for guidance on this. If you have had an invocation, how did you select the speaker? Are there any important considerations? Thank you! -- Barbara Gordon, MLS Director 319 M-62 Cassopolis, MI 49031 269-357-7822 ext. 101

WebJunction content and upcoming webinars – April 24, 2024 Highlighted Content Helping libraries to be autism-ready<https://www.webjunction.org/news/webjunction/helping-libraries-be-autism-re…>: Imagine a child standing in front of a brightly lit room at their local public library. Lively music is playing, and bubbles are bouncing all around. Children and adults fill the room, talking loudly and playing with toys. In the distance is a colorful rug with letters on it where everyone will gather for storytime. Does the child go right in, look for friends, and find a spot on the rug? Or do they stop, cover their ears, close their eyes, and take a deep breath? And what do the parents decide is best for their child, perhaps remembering a previous negative experience? These questions are important to consider when creating autism-inclusive programming. Read this article to learn more about how the University of Washington’s new Autism-Ready Libraries Toolkit can help. Singing the unsung heroes that make libraries successful<https://www.webjunction.org/news/webjunction/singing-unsung-library-heroes.…>: Community partnerships play an important role in creating successful libraries, and Berks County Public Library in Pennsylvania is no exception. Each year, the library honors individuals and groups in the community who demonstrate outstanding leadership, innovation, and dedication to library service in the community. In March 2024, Noah Lenstra interviewed Emily Orischak, Community Relations Coordinator, Berks County Public Libraries, to learn more about the library system’s 21 years of running an awards celebration. In times like these, searching for common ground might sound naïve or idealistic, but intentionally cultivating these mindsets can have a profound effect on your organizational culture, communication, problem-solving, and mental health. This webinar introduces skills grounded in the “Good Inside” approach, and will cover practical strategies to develop empathetic, curiosity-led leadership that assumes good intent in moments of conflict and stress, along with actionable communication skills for connection and cooperation. Supporting healthy communities: Public library responses to the opioid crisis Thursday, May 16, 2024 ◆ 3:00 pm Eastern / 12:00 pm Pacific ◆ 60 minutes Registration: https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/opioid-crisis-support-kit.ht… The opioid crisis continues to rage unabated in our communities and worsened in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic. Public libraries have a critical opportunity to support the information needs of patrons dealing with and impacted by substance misuse. Related programming and services are deeply connected to addressing health equity, and they help libraries link community members to critical information that can improve their lives and the lives of loved ones. WebJunction has released the “Opioid Crisis Support Kit for Public Libraries” to help library staff assess their strengths and capacity, identify key local partners with whom to collaborate or coordinate, and plan and implement programming and services that contribute to addressing the opioid crisis. Join this webinar to learn how libraries have found success and purpose with the Support Kit and gain insights to empower your community toward healthier outcomes. The project aims to identify the range of policies and procedures which govern cardholder access as well as the rationale used for establishing these policies. Research findings have been summarized in a report made available to the library field beginning spring 2024. Join us for a discussion about the inspiration for this study, how the research was conducted, and key findings and takeaways using data from more than 1,800 public libraries across the United States. In this webinar, learn how to identify the signs of domestic/sexual violence and stalking, what/when/how to say something to a survivor, and how to provide resources to someone who does not disclose abuse. You will learn how to:  * Identify ways to research and navigate reporting laws and resources for survivors and allies in your state * Recognize best practices for listening to a disclosure * Select ways to improve your library's programs and procedures for survivors * Collaborate with crisis centers and other local partners to support survivors This program is supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Ethics Policy or Ethics Statement
by aestelle otsegolibrary.org 24 Apr '24

24 Apr '24

Good morning, I have been attending the Public Libraries Financial Management Class and recently finished the Internal Controls portion of the class. One fraud prevention control they mentioned was having in place an Ethics Policy or Ethics statement for employees. We do not currently have one at ODL so I was curious what this looks like for libraries. If you currently have an Ethics Policy or Ethics statement in your employee handbook or financial procedures can you please send me a copy or link? Have a lovely day and thanks for sharing if you are able! Thanks Andrea Andrea Estelle, MLIS Brighten the Corner Where You Are!
