The first presentation of the Cairns & Beacons lecture and discussion series will be this Thursday, September 14th at 7pm. Philosopher and educator Elizabeth Minnich will be speaking on her ideas presented in the book *The Banality of Evil. * Why is thinking important? Which ways of thinking develop independence, creativity, and individual responsibility? Are these connected to ‘good’ acts? Is there a relation between not thinking and irresponsibility, “just following orders,” not wandering from status quo, and “keeping my head down”? Are there connections between these ‘bad,’ even ‘evil’ acts? There will be a discussion of these ideas on the following Thursday, September 21st at 7pm. Please excuse multiple-posting. This is a new position at Kresge Library Services of the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor). The focus of the position is to provide support for faculty to select and explore new cases and learning objects for their classes. Many faculty use the same cases year in and year out. Our goal in doing this is to have a member of our team who can work directly with faculty and explore additional options. Typically we send them to Harvard for an assessment of their syllabus - but that only drives to the Harvard and Harvard-represented resources. My hope is that we will start using more OER (Open Educational Resources) that do not require students to purchase for access. The librarian will also work with reference and action-learning, so that is good. This is the key summary of the position: The Business Curriculum Librarian will provide a full range of information support in a service-oriented business reference environment. This new position will work with faculty at the Ross School and staff in Kresge Learning Services to ensure that resources are available for Ross classes. These resources may be available through online course materials, through the school's CMS (Course Management System), or distributed in class. This librarian will work with faculty to provide options for course materials (cases, articles, and simulations) for their class. Provide reference assistance and participate in instructional and outreach programs related to course materials and curriculum resources. This position is a 12-month, 100% effort, non-tenure track appointment reporting to the Library Director. Sorry to be so late posting this. The last week has not gone as I had planned, and this got lost. Our March program presenting Dr. Evan Caminker, Dean Emeritus and Branch Rickey Collegiate Professor of Law, University of Michigan Law School, was postponed when North Carolina's Supreme Court decided to re-address the issue after the state supreme court party balance changed. The US Supreme Court surprised many by decided the issue on June 27, 2023. Dr. Caminker will join us to address the original questions and the implications of the court's decision.
