Circulating Storytime Bags - Question About Diversity
by Lorry Traver 14 Jan '25

14 Jan '25

Good morning Library Land, In an attempt to increase diversity within our storytime checkout bags, I was wondering if those of you who have circulating bags in your youth department might be able to offer me some ideas. Our bags contain two picture books, an educational toy, and some type of activity and we have bags for Pre-K, Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade. I created a "Let's Learn Spanish" bag last year, but aside from adding "how to speak" language bags, I am not coming up with many ideas for how to include everyone in these bags. Thank you so much for any help or ideas you are able to provide. -- *"Keep reading. It's one of the most marvelous adventures that anyone can have." - Lloyd Alexander* *Lorry Traver (She/Her)* Public Services Librarian Brandon Township Library 248-627-1460

Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Public Libraries Courses from the Library of Michigan
by Bradley, Michelle (MDE) 13 Jan '25

13 Jan '25

The Library of Michigan has worked with the Galecia Group to create an Artificial Intelligence for Public Libraries Pathway<https://my.nicheacademy.com/staffskills/pathway/80254>, available now in the LM Niche Academy. In this series of videos, we're going beyond the basics of "what is AI?" We'll be taking a deep dive into how AI works, how it's used today inside and outside of the library, and how to help our colleagues and community learn more about it. We'll start with a deep dive into how modern AI tools are created and trained, aimed at non-techies with a minimum amount of jargon. Then we'll take a thorough look at many of the risks and limitations of AI, from concerns about copyright to the significant environmental impact. Our next series includes recorded demonstrations of several modern AI tools being used, including a 30-minute comprehensive tutorial/demo of ChatGPT's advanced features. Next, we'll explore how large language model AI tools can be used to assist with a variety of library writing activities, such as policy documents, social media posts, and more. Finally, we'll discuss some of the things you'll need to consider before launching your own library AI training project, whether for staff or patrons in the community. In addition, we'll be hosting two "office hours" live Q&A sessions this spring where you can get all your AI questions answered! Launch<https://my.nicheacademy.com/staffskills/pathway/80254> the pathway for details. https://my.nicheacademy.com/staffskills/pathway/80254 Michelle Bradley Library Development Manager Library of Michigan 517-335-1507 [Michigan.gov/Vote logo Description automatically generated]<https://mvic.sos.state.mi.us/> Get personalized voter information on early voting and other topics at Michigan.gov/Vote<https://mvic.sos.state.mi.us/>.
