The Bay County Library System is hosting our next Friends author event with Brendan Slocumb next Tuesday, October 1st at Garber High School. The address is 213 Pine St, Essexville MI. The event will start at 7:00 PM and will include a presentation by the author, a Q and A, and book signing. Books will also be available for purchase courtesy of Leopard Print Books. More info can be found at: https://www.baycountylibrary.org/event/evening-brendan-slocumb-72947 More about Brendan Slocumb: Brendan Nicholaus Slocumb was born in Yuba City, California and was raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a degree in music education, concentrations on Violin and Viola. While at UNCG, Brendan was the concertmaster for the University Symphony orchestra and served as the principal violist. He performed with numerous small chamber ensembles, including flute and clarinet choirs, and in the BESK string quartet. For the past twenty-three years, he has been a public and private school music educator from kindergarten through twelfth grade, teaching general music, orchestra and guitar ensembles. His students were often chosen for district and regional orchestras. In 2005, Brendan was named Teacher of the Year for Robert E. Lee High School; has been named to Who’s Who of American teachers, and is a Nobel Teacher of distinction. Brendan also serves as an educational consultant for the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Music has always played a major part of Brendan’s life. He believes that it’s a life-saving force, and a gift we should always offer our children. When he was nine, he started playing violin through a public school music program. It actually saved his life. Friends he grew up with are today sitting in jail; when they were out running the streets, he was in rehearsals. When they were breaking into people’s houses, he was practicing Dvorak and Mozart. His violin opened the door to opportunity, and he ran through it. Through music, Brendan developed a work ethic that he now tries to instill in his students so that they too can experience the joys of what music can do for us all. Each student is unique. No two kids learn the same way. Not everyone will go on to become world famous musicians, but everyone can learn to appreciate and love music, and to find new ways of communicating. Meeting each student where he or she is, and taking them farther than they thought possible, is what Brendan has always strived to do. Upcoming Author Panel Event in East Lansing

Good morning! I wanted to alert this list to an upcoming event happening in East Lansing in October. Michigan Humanities will be hosting a Great Michigan Read Author Reunion, featuring Beth Nguyen, Kevin Boyle, Steve Luxenberg, Kekla Magoon, Dr. Mona Hanna, Mary Doria Russell, and Angeline Boulley. In a conversation moderated by Bill Castanier, these authors will come together to discuss the ways that literature is critical to building empathy and understanding. This event takes place October 24, 6:30 p.m., at the Pasant Theatre at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts in East Lansing. A book signing with the featured authors will follow the panel conversation; Schuler Books will be on site with copies for purchase. This event will also serve as the announcement of the 10th Great Michigan Read title. Admission to this event is free, but registration is required. SUMMARY The University Librarian should be an enthusiastic and innovative leader who works collaboratively with faculty and staff to provide the library services necessary for students’ success at SAU’s campus in southern Michigan and online. RESPONSIBILITIES * Collaborates with faculty and other academic professionals to ensure the library’s services align with curricular needs and provide students with the information resources necessary for their success. * Exhibits innovation and creativity related to library holdings, structure, and management to meet the needs of 21st century students at SAU. * Ensures that the library’s website and resources to access information related to library are complete and current. * Ensures access of library resources and services to the university community. * Coordinates the delivery of library services to students, faculty, and staff who are remote. * Develops and administers an effective online library environment. * Ensures that the library’s physical space is welcoming, comfortable, accessible, and effective. * Manages the library budget and spending. * Supervises library staff. * Works with faculty to promote the use of Open Educational Resources (OER). * Maintains well-organized procedures for the selection, acquisition and cataloging of physical and online collections, books, periodicals, and other library materials to support SAU’s curricula. * Manages the library’s Integrated Library System. * Manages the library’s electronic resources, including all databases, serials, and consortia, including the annual evaluation of those resources. * Maintains and strengthens partnerships and collaborative relationships with consortia and other groups, including Midwest Collaborative for Library Services, Association of Christian Librarians, Michigan Academic Library Association, etc. * Provides leadership to information literacy activities and participates in the design of information literacy curriculum and information literacy instruction as needed. * Oversees SAU’s small institutional archives. * Performs additional duties as assigned and authorized by University administration. QUALIFICATIONS A master’s degree in library science, library & information science, or related discipline from a regionally accredited institution is required. At least three years of experience working in an academic library and management experience is preferred. Experience with library services and/or teaching in online environments is helpful. Strong computer skills are required, and familiarity with Brightspace or other online learning management systems is helpful. Must be an effective communicator, be self-motivated, be results oriented, be able to prioritize work and manage multiple priorities, and have budget management skills. My name is Tabetha Barry, newest member to the CSLP team. I was born and raised in a small town in Southwest Michigan where I still reside with my amazing husband, two kids and dog. We enjoy all the sites and surroundings Michigan has to offer. From its beautiful beaches in the summer to the fields, orchards and changing trees in the fall. I enjoy traveling, hiking, gardening, crocheting and cuddling up with my family to read a good book. I come to CSLP with 20 years of business experience having worked in finance for 12 of those years, and more recently in the youth non-profit sector for 5 years where I successfully ran the finance department. During that time, I worked with a passion led team in the creation of youth programs that provided safe, educationally based and affordable childcare options to under-resourced communities, reaching 5 local communities and hundreds of children and their families. Leone, Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) Did you know that over the course of the summer, over 22,000 incarcerated individuals interacted with New York State Correctional Facility (CF) General Libraries? Out of the 45 statewide general library sites at correctional facilities, 42 reported a plethora of vibrant and beneficial active and passive Summer Reading library programs. These programs were designed to showcase the importance of developing and enhancing reading, literacy and social skills amongst incarcerated individuals. All over the state, correctional facility librarians promoted the importance of the power of libraries to help build a sense of inclusion and transformation for all members of the community. Like public libraries in communities all over NY state, these facility libraries are truly a place for everyone. Librarians from several facility General Libraries provided reports about how these programs and activities implemented a variety of fun and exciting strategies to engage incarcerated individuals in reading and education. For example, the Clinton CF General Library held “Olympic Games.” Library users were given Olympic themed word searches, crosswords, and word scrambles, along with an interactive world map where they could engage with geography by identifying the different countries that hosted Olympic Games. To engage all members of the correctional community with reading, the Adirondack CF reported about an 8-week program called the Creative Aging Writers Workshop, which was led by a group of experienced artists, writers, storytellers, and individual artists. Many different NYS DOCCS (Department of Corrections and Community Supervision) General Libraries created other ways to integrate and implement Summer Reading into their programs and activities. The Mid-State CF General library saw 52 participants participate in their book clubs, film discussions and Art/Essay/Poetry Contests. Along with this, a Book Showdown was held at the Lakeview Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility. This reading competition was especially successful this summer and engaged 5 teams of 8 participants each. Due to the success and popularity of this Book Showdown program, the facility plans to hold another competition in September. Other facility libraries organized trivia contest sessions based around particular themes, discussed comic books and comic book creation and multiple art styles and genres, provided puzzle solving events, and hosted book clubs using audiobooks. These are just a few examples of the creative and engaging ways that correctional facility librarians serve incarcerated individuals to make Summer Reading and Learning a truly inclusive adventure for EVERYONE! Success Stories: Patron Art in Oklahoma From Drumright Piblic Library in Oklahoma—a parent made this beautiful sidewalk art while her child was in a program one day this summer. Hello all, October is Family History Month! We are excited to be hosting Tony Burroughs, author of *Black Roots,* for a program on Black Genealogy Basics. Tony Burroughs is founder and CEO of the Center for Black Genealogy. He is an internationally known genealogist who taught genealogy at Chicago State University for fifteen years. Burroughs researched Olympic Gold Medal sprint champion Michael Johnson’s family history and consulted on the Smokey Robinson genealogy, the Oprah Winfrey genealogy, Reverend Al Sharpton-Strom Thurmond genealogy, African American Lives2, Who Do You Think You Are, The Real Family of Jesus and consulted with Chicago Public Schools, New York Public Schools, Chicago City Colleges and Ancestry.com.
