Conservation and Collections Care Camp on Nov. 20

The Michigan Collections Network will be hosting a Conservation and Collections Care Camp at MSU library on Nov. 20 from 10 to 4. People with interest and responsibilities in caring for our physical collections are welcome to attend and encouraged to participate and present. Current presentations include such topics: treating a county atlas, building a quick custom, cardboard, clamshell box, managing conservation without a conservator, creating and using an DIY humidity chamber to flatten documents and more... All participants will be encouraged, but not required, to present something from their own efforts to care for their collections. Presentations from 5 to 45 minutes are welcome. There may be a small cost to help cover lunch. Registration is limited to 40. Good Morning Everyone!As we all prepare for the Michigan Library Association's Annual Conference starting this evening, we would like you to start thinking about nominating that special library, librarian, and Trustees/Friends for the 2014 Loleta Fyan Small/Rural Libraries Conference for the following awards: Outstanding Small/Rural Librarian Award: Recognizes a librarian who is an outstanding leader in the profession. The Librarian of the Conference has made a significant contribution to his/her library and has invested him/herself in efforts to bring about positive change in the small/rural library community. This award goes to an individual currently employed in a Michigan library. Trustee/Friend Award: Given to a Trustee or Friend of a small or rural library for distinguished service to rural library development on the local, state, regional or national level. Patron Services Award: Recognizes a librarian from a small or rural library who has made significant contributions to and a positive impact on library service to patrons through outstanding program(s) or services. And again this year we are have the pleasure to recognize one library through an award sponsored by the Roger and June Mendel Fund! The Small/Rural Library Excellence Award is a cash award of $1000 given to the Michigan Small and/or Rural Library that exemplifies excellence in customer service and community involvement. Hello All - I received a phone call from Troy Haskell at OCI, Oklahoma Correctional Institute/Industries, 405-527-0832, (he is sending me an email with all the information) and he offered to digitize our HS yearbooks for FREE, and pay postage both ways. I Googled the phone number and organization and called one of the references at the Weatherford Public Library, TX. All good!! Of course - if it's too good to be true Has anyone been approached by this organization? Has anyone heard of this organization? Has anyone used their services? He said that they want the publicity for their inmates and hope by doing yearbooks for libraries and non-profits, that they may get paid work digitizing other materials in the future. Advanced E-rate Deadline to Register is Oct 21

The deadline to register for the upcoming Advanced E-rate Training session is October 21. To register, please visit: http://www.solutionwhere.com/lom/cw/showcourse.asp?40 Registration is $30 per person. This includes refreshments, lunch and class material. The training will be held on Tuesday, October 29 from 8:45-4:30 at the Library of Michigan. The 2013 Advanced E-rate Training will cover any updates provided by the SLD during their Fall Training Workshops. Attendees will also focus on procurement and the Form 471 along with other information needed to submit an application during the application window. Provided that the online Form 470 and 471 Training site is available, attendees will also review how to complete and file the Form 470 and the Form 471 online. This workshop will be a follow up to the Basic E-rate Workshop held in June and will focus on higher-level issues that are encountered during the application and review processes. Beginners are also welcome but should review the SLD web site<http://www.usac.org/sl/> before attending to familiarize themselves with the terminology and the application processes. Linda Schatz will lead the workshop and share information and program insights to help libraries successfully apply for E-rate funds.
