Summer Food Service program
by Reish, Karren (MDE) 28 Jan '14

28 Jan '14

FYI for those libraries who are interested in partnering with their local schools for summer or Summer Reading programs for children. The Summer Food program provides food during the summer for children in Michigan. You can contact your local ISD or school district to see if they are participating or contact the Summer Food office for more information. See the press release below for more information. [Michigan Dept of Ed header] News Release Contact: Martin Ackley, Director of Public and Governmental Affairs, (517) 241-4395 Hunger Doesn’t Take A Summer Vacation More Partners Needed To Make A Real Difference in the Lives of Hundreds of Thousands of Hungry Michigan Children January 28, 2014 The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is looking for community partners, sponsors, and potential site locations to participate in Michigan’s Summer Meet Up and Eat Up™ initiative and run summer food programs to prevent nearly 570,000 children in Michigan from going hungry when school lunchrooms close for the summer. The Summer Food Service Program could fill the summer hunger gap for hundreds of thousands of children if there is an increase in community awareness, local government involvement, sponsors to run the program, and sites to serve meals. Last year, out of the nearly 570,000 low-income Michigan children who were eligible, just more than 90,000 (16 percent) were able to eat free meals or snacks at approved summer meal sites in their neighborhoods. In stressing the importance of sponsoring these crucial summer food programs for children, State Superintendent Mike Flanagan said: “Many families across Michigan are struggling, and we can’t have children going hungry in the summer when programs like this are available. I am calling on schools, churches, and local government and civic organizations to step up and have a positive impact on the lives and health of children in their community by supporting the Summer Food Service Program.” Research shows a direct relationship between good nutrition and learning. The Summer Food Service Program is a key building block in Michigan communities to develop healthy, happy kids who are ready to learn. “There is a desperate need and the food is available,” Flanagan said. “We just need more awareness of the program’s availability, more community members to get involved, and additional locations around the state to serve children.” Sponsors receive federal payments for both the meals served to children and the administrative costs of serving the meals. New sponsors will receive free training and technical assistance from MDE. The Summer Food Service Program serves nutritious meals to children up to age 18 living in low-income areas (where 50 percent or more of the students qualify for free or reduced price school meals). The program can operate in schools, public housing centers, playgrounds, camps, parks, and faith-based facilities. Sponsors can be public school districts or nonprofit private schools; public or private nonprofit residential summer camps; local, county or state government agencies; colleges or universities; or private nonprofit organizations. If you are interested in more information about how you can help feed your community this summer, please contact MDE by March 1, 2014. Program information may be obtained from MDE’s Office of School Support Services, Summer Food Service Program, 608 West Allegan Street, P.O. Box 30008, Lansing, Michigan 48909, 517-373-3347; or on the MDE website at www.michigan.gov/sfsp<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…>. The Summer Food Service Program, administered by MDE through funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is available to children 18 and under regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability. # # # [Meet Up and Eat Up] * SFSP press release 2014.pdf<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…> ________________________________ [Michigan Department of Education Logo] Questions? Library Director position-Ohio Township Public Library System (IN)
by Jobeth Bradbury 28 Jan '14

28 Jan '14

Library Director-Ohio Township Public Library System (IN) Welcome to our town-as the next director of the <http://www.ohio.lib.in.us> Ohio Township Public Library System. The Library Board of Trustees seeks a new leader to help continue and enhance the Library's successful role as a creative, cultural, and collaborative connection in the community. The Library director will work strategically with local organizations and agencies and be responsive to the needs and concerns of staff, patrons and the community. Ohio Township Public Library System is an independent district with a tax rate exclusively dedicated to public library service. Governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees, the Library staff of 50 serves the 37,749 citizens in Ohio Township with a $2 million dollar annual budget. The Library consists of the new Central Library, and two branch facilities: Chandler, located in the town of Chandler; and Newburgh, located in a 1984 building fronting the Ohio River. The challenge for the next director will be to forge strong community relationships and partnerships while leading a motivated staff to further serve the community effectively. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio_Township,_Warrick_County,_Indiana> Ohio Township, consisting primarily of the cities of Newburgh and Chandler, is located in southwest Indiana in Warrick County. Nestled against a bend in the Ohio River, this community has deep historical roots, small town charm, and a thriving waterfront. While home to interesting shops, quality dining, and local events and festivals, city amenities are also easily accessible - Indianapolis, Nashville, St. Louis and Louisville are all within a few hours' drive. With a quality public school system, the University of Evansville and University of Southern Indiana, Newburgh also hosts parks, trails, and golf courses. Several large corporations in the region, such as Alcoa, Tropicana Entertainment, Vigo Coal, Toyota, and Deaconess Health System, a low cost of living and a strong agricultural presence contribute to a high quality of life. For additional information, please visit Ohio Township Links <http://www.gossagesager.com/OTPLSlinks.htm> . Responsibilities. The Director reports to a seven-member Library Board of Trustees and works with the Board, staff, and community stakeholders to establish the strategic vision for the Library aligning the Library's mission, goals and objectives with the community's needs and priorities. This is complex executive work which includes planning, directing, managing and overseeing the activities and operations of the library. The Director also works closely with the Board of Library Trustees, local government, and community agencies and organizations. Too, the Director ensures that local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations applicable to Indiana libraries and the by-laws, policies, and directives of the Library Board are being met. Qualifications. Minimum qualifications include an ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library Science; the ability to obtain and retain an Indiana Librarian Certificate 2; and a minimum of three years of relevant library experience which includes supervision of staff. Essential attributes and skills include: vision, creativity, energy and enthusiasm; superior written and oral communications skills; demonstrated success in effectively promoting library services to the community; collaborative and consensus-building skills; experience in recruiting, mentoring, evaluating and retaining an excellent staff; and a thorough knowledge of current trends and "best practices" for library service. Successful experience as a library director reporting to a governing board is desirable. Compensation. The starting salary range is $62,000 to $74,000 (with placement dependent upon experience and qualifications) with an attractive benefits package. General Warning: Scam Sites
by Christian Dunham 28 Jan '14

28 Jan '14

Greetings All, Yet again I have received another email from a person who wants me to review their company's website and add it to our library's website. I get these frequently enough that it concerns me they are targeting all of you as well-they are link-baits, a scam. Their website they want you to post onto yours are usually review sites for some service. The latest request was for a site that reviewed online tax services, while other ones usually deal with college preparation or finances in some manner or form. I have received dozens in the last few years. All of them come from a real person (not a bot) who usually has no business or contact information attached to their signature, and they almost always are using a personal email address like Gmail or Yahoo. The person contacting you will often tell you the other places that have used their website, and often word their emails congenially like a used car salesman. They are persistent too: they will message you repeatedly until they receive a reply back. Their sites look legitimate enough, but their real goal is to have people click to external sites so their own website generates revenue. Basically, you are giving them an opportunity to make money everytime a patron clicks on one of their site's links. I suggest you shamelessly steal the links their sites link to and host them on your own site, if you are inclined to do so. Example: I was asked to link to a Tax Review Site: http://www.reviews.com/online-tax-software/ -- If you click on the first option, TurboTax, it will take you to a page of paltry reviews. If you hover your mouse over the orange button: "Get Started" you'll notice the site it adhoc's to for revenue: LinkTrackR, known software site for advertising companies: http://ww3.linktrackr.com/ -- While it will take your patrons to Turbotax.com it does so after it generates a little bit of revenue for the original host site. Personally, I don't like to see my organization's website play fiddle so deceitful parties can make easy money. This particular example was easy to spot, but other ones aren't. If it seems too friendly and helpful, and it's free, hang on.. Cheerio, Christian Dunham christian(a)carolibrary.org 989-673-4329 ext. 106

policy for adult accounts regarding fines/fees
by director 28 Jan '14

28 Jan '14

We've been having problems lately with patrons racking up charges on one account and then simply having another adult family member open a new account rather than paying the balance. Does anyone have any recommendations for a policy that could be put in place to help protect us from this issue? We already have one regarding minor accounts since they are tied to the parent/guardian that set up the account and/or any other minors who are under the same parent/guardian. Once one account reaches our fine/fee limit, all accounts that are tied to it receive a pop-up and may be blocked until the overdue account it brought up to date. Is it acceptable to tie adult accounts together so once our fine/fee limit is reached it blocks all adult accounts in the household as well? handling books with inserts responses
by director 28 Jan '14

28 Jan '14

I had a few requests to share the information I gathered regarding the book "S" or other books with inserts. Sorry it's taken so long to share this! We are still debating between simply using it as our Adult Summer Reading prize or adding it to the shelves. If it is added we will be placing our spine label on the exterior box so the title of the book is still visible and we will not run into shelving problems. The inserts would then be placed in an envelope inside the box with a note about the contents, including how many pieces are inside. Each piece will be marked with the corresponding page number. At each check-in the pieces will be counted and if any come up missing they will be marked as such individually. Following are some other responses we received: We ran into the same problem last week. Our solution was to "tip-in" CD sleeves to the pages that contained "stuff". It worked very well. It did; however, make the book slightly too thick to fit back into it's very cool, original box. We had discussed making photocopies of all of the inserts to have as replacement parts, but I believe decided against it. Another solution would be to discreetly write corresponding page numbers on the "stuff" and place them all in an envelope that circulates with the book. -Mindy S., Dewitt Library It is awesome, but almost impossible to circulate with all of those pieces and parts. See this article: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/jj-abrams-mystery-book-s-654109 We have decided not to circulate this book at all. It is an excellent gift book though, for people to purchase and give as a gift for the book-lover in their lives. -Julie S., Dearborn Public Library We also purchased this book and have not decided what to do with it. Perhaps I'll use it for a prize in our January-March adult reading program and let the winner figure out how to keep track of all the pieces! -Maureen D., Otsego County Library We had a similar dilemma deciding what to do with S. here at the Canton Public Library. The librarian that ordered S. agreed to continue to circulate it even if some of the inserts disappear (as the cool stuff always does.) We are circulating S. as a group of three items: the book, a 7x10in, labeled envelope containing all of the inserted materials, and the sleeve the book came in. We removed all of the inserted material, created a descriptive list of the contents in numbered order listing the pages they should be read at, and secured it all in a manila envelope. Each of the items has a property label and a number from the contents list. We placed an RFID tag on the book, the sleeve, and the envelope and coded them as a set of 26 (if I remember correctly,) all with the same barcode, so that whenever the item is returned someone will manually count the pieces. The sleeve and the book itself both received a spine label with our call number and we taped the S. label to the spine of the novel in an attempt to convey what the book is actually titled. The manila envelope conveniently fits inside the sleeve with the book and each of these three large pieces is labeled with the barcode and "S. by J.J. Abrams and Doug Dorst." The bib record also has two notes explaining the contents and that the 813.54 STR on the spine is a faux spine label, to help mitigate shelving issues. -Lauren L., Canton Public Library We decided not to add after receiving and looking it over. A staff member tried to read it, but apparently you need to read the story and read the notes/cards etc at the same time. Decided that we will use it as a door prize for a library program. -Amy R., White Lake Township Library Here are links to some ideas from librarians who participate in the autocat discussion list. http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.education.libraries.autocat/56940 http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.education.libraries.autocat/57003 -Marian V., Comstock Township Library Ms. TJ Smith Ms. TJ Smith Library Director Sherman Township Library (989) 644-5131 shermandirector(a)winntel.net
