Please help us spread the word to your train enthusiast patrons! Michigan Rails Conference, this Saturday, September 21, 2013. Keynote speakers include Michael H. Hodges, author of the award winning Michigan's Historic Railroad Stations, and railroad scholar Graydon M. Meints, author of Railroads for Michigan. Participants may choose from a range of historical sessions or can attend presentations devoted to rail transportation in Michigan today. The Michigan Department of Transportation will be presenting on their ongoing work throughout the state and the Michigan Association of Railroad Passengers will be on hand to discuss current day passenger travel. Other highlights include an opportunity to hear the staff of the Michigan Railroad History Museum discuss their programs, or, visit the Library of Michigan's Martha W. Great Lakes Resource Sharing Conference

On behalf of the Conference Program Committee, we would like to invite you to submit a proposal for the Great Lakes Resource Sharing Conference. The event will be held in Toledo, OH at the Hilton Garden Inn at Perrysburg on Friday, June 6, 2014. This conference is an opportunity for individuals working in resource sharing to gather information and communicate with other colleagues. We invite program proposals from September 16, 2013 to January 17, 2014. Accepted program proposal submissions should be 45 minutes in length including time for questions. This message is being sent to multiple lists; please excuse duplication. Are you looking for effective ways to promote your library, its programs and services? Then come to the TLN Adult Services Fall Workshop on Wednesday, October 2, from 9am-1pm at the Novi Public Library. The theme for the workshop is "Hello? Do You Know We're Here? Making Your Library's Presence Felt in Your Community." We know that our libraries have so much to offer, but how do we get the word out? This workshop will give strategies for promotion and partnerships that will help community members to view the library as relevant and valuable. The workshop speakers are: - Laurie Golden (Canton Public Library) will share tips for developing strong partnerships in the community. Canton Public Library received the 2013 LibraryAware Community Award for its work in connecting with the community. Discover ways to create a library that is truly valued by the community. - Bill Harmer and Anna Cangialosi (Chelsea District Library) will discuss ways to engage the community to build relationships. The library's highly visible "Geek the Library" campaign was the talk of the town, in a good way! Learn how community engagement can reap benefits for the library. - Kelly Rembert Ireland (Southfield Public Library) will provide tips and tricks to market the library and its programs to your community on a low to zero budget. Find out which types of marketing will work best for you and your library. The workshop registration fee is $15 for TLN library members, $20 for non-TLN library members and $10 for library science students. A program flyer and registration form are attached. Submit Your Proposal for the 2014 Rural Library Conference

It is time to begin thinking about the 2014 Rural Libraries Conference. The event will be held April 30-May 2, 2014 at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. The Library of Michigan and the Rural Libraries Conference Program Committee encourage you to submit a proposal for the conference. Submit your proposal here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RLC2014 The Rural Libraries Conference has a long tradition of providing a forum for the staff, trustees, and advocates of Michigan's small and rural libraries to share, learn and be inspired to provide the best library service to their communities. The 2014 RLC theme is Partnerships, People, Progress. Let's come together as a community to share our collective knowledge of imaginative, resourceful and successful library practices. How can you contribute? Bring your tried and true as well as your new and inventive practices to share with your Michigan library colleagues. If it's working well for you, chances are good that others could benefit from hearing about it. We will be showcasing up to 50 presentations at the 2014 conference. The RLC Program Committee invites you to consider the following conference tracks as you design your program proposal: * Library Technology or Digital Literacy * Services to Individual Populations (youth, seniors, unemployed, entrepreneurs, etc.) * Library Programming * Engagement, Collaboration & Partnerships * Administration and Management Presenters will be required to provide an electronic copy of session materials by April 1, 2014 that will be on a flash drive to all conference attendees. The Library of Michigan will provide all presenters with one conference registration and one night's lodging at the Grand Hotel (or other hotel accommodation up to the state rate of $75 per night) per day of presenting. Program selection is a peer-reviewed process. The RLC Program Committee will evaluate the content of your proposal for relevance to the conference tracks, clarity, originality, and timeliness. The experience and qualifications of presenter(s) will also be considered. Proposals are due Monday, October 21, 2013 in order to be considered for inclusion in the 2014 conference. Please note that proposals with significant incomplete information will not be considered. The contact person for the proposal will be notified of the status of that proposal by the end of December 2013. October 24 Broadband Conference - library staff register at no cost

On Thursday, October 24th, 2013, Connect Michigan and the Library of Michigan will host the 2013 Michigan Broadband Conference to bring together community and economic development professionals, local government officials and staff, libraries, educators, technology providers, and many others to collaborate and share best practices for expanding broadband and technology access, adoption, and use in communities across the state. The conference will be held at the Kellogg Center on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan from 9AM to 5PM. ***Library staff can register for free!
