The Library of Michigan is pleased to announce a new video series highlighting Michigan libraries-public, school and academic-and how they are making a big difference in their communities and to those they serve in the 21st century. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Olivia Courant, the genius behind The Bright Side videos at the Community Economic Development Association of Michigan, for all her hard work and creative presentation. Olivia logged many miles around the state visiting libraries and interviewing library staff and those with whom they work. Letters about Literature program judges wanted

The Library of Michigan is looking for judges for the Letters about Literature program. People familiar with English language arts education, young adult literature, and literary programming for grades 4-12 are welcome. Judging includes reading approximately 50 letters sometime in February or March and one meeting to discuss which letters should be the winner and finalists. Meeting attendance in person is encouraged, but conference call attendance is okay. If you are interested, please contact me and let me know if you are interested in Level I (grades 4-6), Level II (grades 7-8), or Level III (grades 9-12). We are again hosting this national program for Michigan. The Letters about Literature<http://www.read.gov/letters/> program is a national program from the Library of Congress. It is reading-writing contest that invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to write letters to authors of books that have changed their lives. This program gives students the opportunity to reflect deeply on a book. As readers, they come to understand how literature is more than assignment, but also a life changing experience. Children and teens can participate on their own or as part of a library or class project. We have sent a letter and a sample entry form to libraries and schools. The 2014 letters will be due in two waves, which is new this year. Level III entries (grades (9-12) have a deadline of December 10, 2013 and Level I and II entries (grades 4-6 and 7-8) have a deadline of January 10, 2014. The state and national winners will be announced in May 2014. Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society Fall 2013 Grants Reminder

This announcement is being sent to several lists. Please excuse any duplication. This is a reminder that the Metro Detroit Book & Author Society has the following two (2) grants available: the Elaine R. Irvin Friends Award and the Dick Johnston Award. Information about these grants is below. The grants will be presented at the Fall 2013 Book & Author Luncheon on Monday, October 21, 2013, at Burton Manor in Livonia. The winners will receive a free ticket to the Fall 2013 luncheon and must be present to receive the grant. Grant winners are required to submit a 22’’ x 28” project report poster showing how the grant was used to be displayed at the Spring 2014 luncheon. Application forms with instructions and reporting requirements are attached. Applications are due on Monday, September 23, 2013. Completed applications should be send by either email or U.S. mail to the address listed on the application forms. 1. The Elaine R. Irvin Friends Award: $1000. This grant is awarded to a Friends of the Library group in the metro-Detroit area to support a program or project that fills a significant need affecting the library's patrons and community. The award was established to honor the late Elaine R. Irvin, who was a devoted member of the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society Board for many years. Elaine worked for the Friends of the Detroit Public Library and was dedicated to the principle that "good libraries need good Friends." 2. The Dick Johnston Award: $2000. This grant is awarded to a public library in the metro-Detroit area for the purpose of establishing or improving a library collection. The award was established to honor the late Dick Johnston, who was a member of the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society and served as its President in 1980 and 1981. Mr. Johnston was also President of the Michigan Library Association and Director of the Birmingham and Bloomfield Township Libraries.
