Detroit Jazz Artist Available for Free Jazz Concerts and Educational Programming at Libraries this Fall

Please see below for more information. --message-- The RJ Spangler Trio has a performance grant that allows us to play free concerts for schools, non-profits, libraries, etc. We have openings in September, October, November & December. About the program and performers: RJ Spangler speaks about the history of Detroit's jazz & blues roots and performs musical examples with an all-star band. RJ is a graduate of GPS, class of '75! About Larry: Born & raised in Aliquippa, Penn.,near Pittsburgh in 1947, where he got his start playing jazz, showing the ropes to his friend, jazz guitar great George Benson. Smith moved to New York where he played with some big names such as organist Shirley Scott, drummer Joe Chambers and multi-saxophonist Rahsaan Roland Kirk. For years, Smith bounced around from New York to New Jersey to Detroit (where he sunk roots after his mother moved here) and back. Larry had a special relationship with one the all-time great sax players - Sonny Stitt. Sonny knew & encouraged Larry going back to his teenage years, when passing through Pennsylvania. This lead to Larry touring with Sonny as a regular member of his group. Quite an honer for a man that plays the same instrument as the leader! In Detroit he lead his own bands & also played in Detroit jazz master Roy Brooks Artistic Truth band. Larry has a reputation as an old-school keeper of the bebop flame and a killer when it comes to the blues. As Charles Latimer said in the Metro Time "his specialty is ballads. He shuts his eyes, hunches his shoulders, and holds his saxophone like a prom date. The ballads are so touching they'd make the devil cry." Larry appears as a special guest on James Carter's 1996 Conversin' with the Elders & Live at Baker's Keyboard Lounge disc, released in 2004. He has also toured with the queen of soul, Aretha Franklin. Drummer RJ Spangler has appeared on over 60 recordings and has toured the US, Canada & Europe quite a few times. He lectures on Detroit jazz & blues history and beyond his trio, he leads the Planet D Nonet swing band as well as a blues band. His latest release is "This Is What We Do" w/ the RJ Spangler on the Eastlawn label. Guitarist Oliver Nevels is another veteran player whom has recorded & toured nationally with organist Charles Earland, appearing on two of his CDs, including "I Ain't Jivin' I'm Jammin" for the legendary Muse label. He also toured with organist Richard "Groove" Holmes. Bassist Greg Cook is a Detroit main stay, having proven himself playing with the top of Detroit's jazz scene: Geri Allen, Roy Brooks & Marcus Belgrave & many others. He toured Europe with soul great Bettye LeVette and held down the bass chair in Rat Pack show for countless performances. Wondering - those Township Libraries who continue to operate under PA 269 (now repealed): 1. Do you have your own By-laws? (If you do, would you please share a copy with me?) 2. Do you have Library policies that are separate from your Township policies? And if you do, could you please share a copy of your policy Table of Contents with me? Program recommendation - Italian Hall disaster

The Italian Hall disaster in Calumet, Michigan is one of the great unsolved mysteries of Michigan history. It involved the deaths of over 70 people - mostly children. It was, whether intended or not, a mass homicide. The tragedy evokes a lot of emotion in the area still. It is a really fascinating event that people continue to study today. The great Woody Guthrie wrote a famous song based on the 1913 Massacre as it was sometimes called. http://1913massacre.com/about-the-song/ There was a film done as well. There is a link, below, for a synopsis and the trailer for the film including Arlo Guthrie and a bit of the song by Woody Guthrie, too. Nice film based on the song. I thought this post on the blog Library Lost and Found entitled "Policies that Help Not Hinder" is a good reminder for us as the ACA Open Enrollment date of October 1 nears. http://librarylostfound.com/2013/09/12/policies-that-help-not-hinder/ Holly offers some ideas for thought and consideration as frontline staff begin encountering a new set of questions arising from the needs of patrons seeking information and tools related to the Affordable Care Act. Makerspace panel featured at MCLS Annual Meeting, October 4

Are you curious how other libraries are transforming their spaces to meet the changing needs of their patrons? Three Midwestern libraries have melded innovation and education creating distinct spaces for children, teens and the technologically curious. As part of the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services' annual meeting on October 4 in Indianapolis Indiana there will be a panel discussion from managers from these three libraries who have successfully integrated a Third Place. Orvella Fields from Indianapolis Public Library will present on the "Learning Curve"; a creative space introducing children to technology. Joining the panel will be Steve Teeri, Conductor at the Detroit Public Libraries’ “HYPE” Teen Makerspace. Hi, folks, We held a program last night with author Donna Searight Simons. She gave a lecture on the history of the 1913 copper strike in the Upper Peninsula, and she also recently self-published a novel based on those events. In her presentation , she speaks about the area where the strike took place, the history of copper mining in the region, and the events that led up to the strike in 1913 and the tragedy at Italian Hall in Calumet, Michigan. She mentions her novel briefly, but she focuses primarily on the copper strike itself. In the past, we have had some difficulty in getting an attendance for a local author, but we had a solid turnout for this program because of the Michigan history connection. Several of the audience members had a personal connection either to the strike, the copper mining industry, or to the location. The audience was really engaged, and Donna did a great job with the presentation and with fielding questions from the audience. If your patrons are Michigan history buffs, I definitely recommend this program.
