E-Rate technology plans

This is a reminder that technology plan requirements for the federal E-Rate program are less restrictive than in years past. If a library only files for E-Rate for Priority One services, such as "Telecommunications Services," including "Telephone Services" and "Internet Access," an updated technology plan does not need to be filed with the Library of Michigan. A Technology Plan does need to be written, submitted to the State Library, and approved before July 1, 2014 (if your technology plan will expire by then) for the period July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2017 if a library is filing for E-rate Priority Two services, which includes "Internal Connections" and "Basic Maintenance of Internal Connections" and the current approved Technology Plan. Technology Plans must be accompanied by a Technology Plan Cover Sheet available at: http://www.michigan.gov/erateforlibraries. Information about the required elements of a Technology Plan and additional information about the program can also be found at that Web address. Chelsea District Library 6th Annual Midwest Literary Walk

Please come and share a day with us at our 6th Annual Midwest Literary Walk! The Midwest Literary Walk will bring award-winning novelists, poets, and musicians to downtown Chelsea. The free, all-day event begins at 11 am on Saturday, April 26 and will host readings at various venues throughout downtown. Ann Arbor-based mystery novelist Harry Dolan (*The Last Dead Girl, Bad Things Happen*) will kick off the event at 11 am at the Purple Rose Theatre, joined by performance poet Garret Potter. At 12:10 pm, Michigan Notable Book winners Matt Bell (*In the House Upon the Dirt Between the Lake and the Woods*) and Mardi Jo Link (*Bootstrapper: From Broke to Badass on a Northern Michigan Farm*) will read at the River Gallery. During a lunch break, attendees are encouraged to explore downtown Chelsea and its great selection of restaurants. Immediately following lunch, we welcome local writers to share their work at the Community Open Mic at 2 pm at the River Gallery. Readers are given five minutes and can sign up for a time slot at the first two venues of the Walk. At 3:10 pm, poets Diane Seuss (*Wolf Lake, White Gown Blown Open*) and American Sign Language interpreter/slam poet Mona Jean Cedar will be featured at the Chelsea District Library. Closing out the day at 4:20 pm are National Book Award finalist Bonnie Jo Campbell (*Once Upon a River*, *American Salvage) *and Detroit poet ML Liebler with the Coyote Monk Poetry Band at the Chelsea Alehouse. The Midwest Literary Walk is a joint venture of the Chelsea District Library, the River Gallery, and Chelsea Writers' Workshop, with support from the Friends of the Chelsea District Library and Nicola's Books. The event is also supported by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts. The featured authors' books will be available for purchase courtesy of Nicola's Books at our venues throughout the day. Books on the Lake author program

The Grosse Pointe Public Library, in partnership with the Grosse Pointe Library Foundation and the Wayne County Community College District's School of Continuing Education, will soon be hosting our Books on the Lake author program. We are so very excited to see it return this year, after a break of several years due to budget cuts. Will you please help us spread the word? Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) Year 2 Press Release and FAQ's

All, In preparation for the launch of MAP Year 2 on May 24, 2014 TLN has created a press release that we encourage you to share with your local media outlets (newspapers, radio, television) as well as with other potential cultural partners. We are hoping that, with your help, media outlets in other markets all across Michigan will do so, too. We've gotten a fair number of MAP-related questions during the past couple of weeks. Here are some answers to the most common questions: 1. How does my library sign up for the MAP program? If you are a public library in Michigan, then you are already signed up for MAP! I have done my best to include every building and every branch of every Michigan public library (about 650 in total). I hope I haven't missed anybody. In the event I have you can help out in this regard, as per point 2 below. 2. What is the url for the Michigan Activity Pass program? www.michiganactivitypass.info This is the link to post to your homepage. Please search for your library name in the My Library Name field at the website. If you don't find it, or if you find it but would like to have the name of your library listed in a different way, please let me know. 3. What is the cost to my library to participate in the Michigan Activity Pass program? There is no cost! MAP is supported in part by the Library of Michigan with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The Library Network (TLN) also provides support of and funding for the MAP program. 4. Why am I not seeing the new cultural partners when I do a search on the MAP website? The new venues, including the Michigan Science Center, the Gilmore Car Museum and many others, will be added to the MAP website on May 24, 2014. But, don't forget that there are 62 cultural partners participating in the MAP program right now! 5. What should I do if I don't find my library when I do a search at the MAP website, per point number 2 above? Contact Jim Flury 6. What should I do if the search result for a cultural venue indicates "No passes available?" Contact Jim Flury 7. Whom should I contact if I or my patrons (or media outlets) have questions about the MAP program that I'm not sure how to answer? The Library of Michigan's Beginning Workshop is a 3-day event geared for library staff members that have not had the opportunity for formal library coursework. Its aim is to introduce library staff to a variety of topics and offer them practical skills that they can use working in a Michigan public library.
