IMLS, the FCC and Broadband Speeds
by Hamlin, Joseph (MDE) 11 Jul '14

11 Jul '14

Hello Public Library Directors, The Institute of Museum and Library Services would like your help assessing library broadband speeds. Please visit http://digitalinclusion.pnmi.com/speedtest/ and run the speed test. The link will ask you to login using your id (FSCS#) if you are unsure of your id the login box has a lookup feature. Many of you participated in the 2013 Digital Inclusion survey which included a basic speed test tool, this is just a refined version of that tool. If you have participated in the past you will receive a postcard reminder to take the new speed test early next week. If you have not participated before, the test is open to any interested public library. The FCC will use the results the test to inform changes in the E-Rate program and better understand library and school broadband needs. Speed test data from your library(ies) will help determine upload/download speeds that users experience at different times during the day - providing a critical measure of service quality in public libraries and helping to inform the FCC about library broadband needs. You can help by taking the speed test by August 1, 2014. To begin, go to http://digitalinclusion.pnmi.com/speedtest/. Thank you! The study is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services<http://www.imls.gov/> (IMLS), and conducted by the American Library Association<http://ala.org/>(ALA) and the Information Policy & Access Center<http://ipac.umd.edu/> (iPAC) at the University of Maryland College Park. The project also is supported by the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies<http://cosla.org/> (COSLA), the Public Library Association<http://pla.org/> (PLA), the Urban Libraries Council<http://www.urbanlibraries.org/> (ULC), and the Association of Rural and Small Libraries<http://arsl.info/> (ARSL). Re: [Michlib-l] Polaroid Giveaway
by Erin Schmändt 10 Jul '14

I have had a huge response to my Throwback Thursday giveaway. Thanks to all who responded. Im working on getting in touch with the first person, and if she declines, I have several backups. If anyone else out there has Polaroids to get rid of, there seems to be a large demand in the library world. Erin Schmändt Director Caro Area District Library 840 W. Paper Library Card Applications
by Robert Chartrand 09 Jul '14

09 Jul '14

Hello All, Are there any libraries that have gotten rid of paper apps for library cards and switched to either directing patrons to an online digital form, or simply just enter their ID information directly into the system? For those that have gotten rid of the paper way, do you have patrons provide their signature digitally, or just skip that part? Is the signature even necessary? Thanks in advance for the feedback! --Robert Chartrand Robert Chartrand Circulation Supervisor East Lansing Public Library 517-351-2420 (Library) 517-319-6943 (Office) _________________________________ East Lansing e-news is just a click away. FREE - used shelving & furniture
by rickslibrarymoving＠charter.net 09 Jul '14

09 Jul '14

In a few weeks we will be moving a library in lower SW Mich from their temporary site to their new building. They have decided to donate their current used shelving and furniture to other libraries. They have asked me to help coordinate it. Some of you are thinking why does he seem familiar. Well, I am. For the last 23 years I have specialized in library moving for my family's business, Mulder's Moving. Due to some changes in family dynamics, I am currently working on my own. The used shelving consists of several styles of Borrough's WilsonStak. There is adult as well as children's shelving. I can sell new Borrough's if you need to add anything to what is available or need additional parts. There is also some tall, double-faced wood shelving. The items are in excellent shape. The location is only around 4,000 sq.ft. so there is not a tremendous amount. If you have an interest, email me with some idea of what you are looking for. If you need assistance with the teardown, transport or reassembly of the items - we are available. I also have helped many libraries with reconfiguring their space so if you need some help in planning for some newer or additional shelving, I can help you there too. Unfortunately - only the shelving and the furniture is free. Thank you, Rick Benthin Kalamazoo Tel/Fax - 269/342-9740 rickslibrarymoving(a)charter.net
