Michigan a Build Iniative State
by Christine Hage 16 Jul '14

16 Jul '14

This is good news for areas in the state that struggle with poverty: *The BUILD Initiative - Boston, MA* Award: $314,884 A cooperative agreement between IMLS and the BUILD Initiative will create deliberate and mutually beneficial connections between the efforts of museums and libraries and those of early childhood systems’ builders to support the growth and development of children from birth to age eight, with an emphasis on children from birth to age five. The partnership will build relationships across the fields/sectors and embed connections in ways that can be replicated and sustained. All objectives will be achieved through engagement with library, museum and early learning leaders in five pilot states: Arizona, Georgia,* Michigan*, Pennsylvania and Washington. -- Christine Lind Hage, President, United for Libraries Library Director, Rochester Hills Public Library 500 Olde Towne Road Rochester, MI 48307-2043 248/650-7122 Raising a reader is: Talking * Singing * Reading * Writing * Playing

Classification Labels: Michigan
by Jill Brown 15 Jul '14

15 Jul '14

Good afternoon, Library Land! Being the new kid on the block, I have yet to locate where to purchase classification labels for our Michigan materials. I've checked on Demco and Gaylord -- am I overlooking them? Where do you purchase yours? Thank you. Library 15th Anniversary Celebration!
by Michelle Moore 15 Jul '14

15 Jul '14

Please join us on Saturday, July 26th from 2:00-4:00 pm for a Library Open House to celebrate 15 Years in the beautiful building donated by Dr. Charles & Virginia Ardis and an entire community of supporters. We have replaced some carpeting, refinished the wood floors, and touched up some paint around the place to keep it looking as close to its original state as possible. Tour the library and enjoy music, light refreshments, and see how it has grown in the past fifteen years. It has been my honor and pleasure to oversee it for the past 5 1/2 years and I look forward to serving the community for many more years to come. *Please invite all of your family and friends (and their families) as this event is free and open to everyone. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Have a lovely summer afternoon! Michelle :) Michelle Moore Library Director Ardis Missaukee District Library 210 S. Quilt Show based on childrens books
by Lisa Sutton 15 Jul '14

15 Jul '14

Our Friends of the Library would like to have a quilt show competition where people make a quilt based on a children's book. We were wondering about copyright issues with this if they did illustrations out the book. Does anyone have an opinion on that, or has anyone done that yet? Please send any forms that you have used for an event like this. Did you need to ask permission from author/illustrator? Thanks, Lisa Sutton Roscommon Area District Library 106 Lake St., P.O. IMLS Announces New Awards to Strengthen Early Learning Activities at Libraries and Museums
by Reish, Karren (MDE) 15 Jul '14

15 Jul '14

Please see the information below on the Build Initiative grant. Michigan, including the Library of Michigan, is participating in this initiative and we hope to have much to share in the coming year on early learning activities and partnerships. Karren Reish Library Grants Coordinator Library of Michigan 517-241-0021 reishk(a)michigan.gov<mailto:reishk@michigan.gov> From: IMLS News [mailto:imlsnews@imls.gov] Subject: IMLS Announces New Awards to Strengthen Early Learning Activities at Libraries and Museums To view this message in a browser, please click here<http://www.idevmail.net/message.aspx?d=73&m=2185&e=reishk@michigan.gov&r=11…>. [IMLS logo] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 11, 2014 IMLS Press Contact 202-653-4799 Giuliana Bullard, gbullard(a)imls.gov<mailto:gbullard@imls.gov> IMLS Announces New Awards to Strengthen Early Learning Activities at Libraries and Museums Washington, DC—Today, IMLS announced three new awards to engage libraries and museums as key partners in comprehensive early learning strategies. Three separate awards totaling $771,854 will be awarded to the Georgia Public Library Service, OCLC, and the BUILD Initiative. These new investments follow up on recommendations made in Growing Young Minds: How Museums and Libraries Create Lifelong Learners<http://www.idevmail.net/link.aspx?l=1&d=73&mid=363882&m=2185>, a policy report that called upon policymakers, schools, funders, and parents to make full use of these vital, existing community resources. IMLS Director Susan H. Hildreth said, “Too many children are starting school without the academic and social skills they need for success. Libraries and museums are effective, but often overlooked, resources in our nation’s effort to turn around a crisis in early learning, exposing children to reading and powerful learning experiences in the critical early years and keeping them learning through the summer months. With these awards, IMLS is taking action to create new opportunities for children, especially those in the lowest socioeconomic status who are the least likely to be able to participate in library and museum programming.” While IMLS continues to make investments at the project level including more than $6 million awarded in individual projects in libraries and museums in FY 2012 and 2013, the investments announced today are intended to make an impact at the systems level. Today’s investments will create stronger relationships among libraries, museums and state level early education providers and develop tools to speed the adoption of evidence-based practice throughout the library and museum communities. The BUILD Initiative - Boston, MA Award: $314,884 A cooperative agreement between IMLS and the BUILD Initiative will create deliberate and mutually beneficial connections between the efforts of museums and libraries and those of early childhood systems’ builders to support the growth and development of children from birth to age eight, with an emphasis on children from birth to age five. The partnership will build relationships across the fields/sectors and embed connections in ways that can be replicated and sustained. All objectives will be achieved through engagement with library, museum and early learning leaders in five pilot states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Washington. Note: BUILD will present a webinar on the project on August 4th at 2:00 p.m. EST. Check the BUILD website in the coming weeks for more details: http://www.buildinitiative.org/OurWork/LearningCommunity/UpcomingEvents.aspx<http://www.idevmail.net/link.aspx?l=2&d=73&mid=363882&m=2185> Georgia Public Library Service - Atlanta, GA Award: $249,895; Match: $103,449 This project is designed to provide a customized early literacy program within libraries to reach parents of young children. Youth librarians in Georgia’s public libraries will provide a learning environment using one of two programs, Prime Time or Every Child Ready to Read (ECRR), to educate parents and caregivers in the importance of early literacy. Monitoring and evaluation of the program will determine the benefits of providing the customized B4 early literacy program for parents of very young children. The evaluation will demonstrate whether Prime Time or ECRR works better in Georgia and which should be continued statewide after the pilot ends. The evaluation will examine the core curriculum for staff and the database-driven website to determine if these aspects enhanced the success of the Prime Time or ECRR library programs in creating a successful customized Birth to Four Early Literacy Program. OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. - Dublin, OH Award: $207,075; Match: $69,129 The grant will support an 18-month project in five states and in partnership with Washington State Library<http://www.idevmail.net/link.aspx?l=3&d=73&mid=363882&m=2185> and Thrive by Five Washington<http://www.idevmail.net/link.aspx?l=4&d=73&mid=363882&m=2185>, two leaders in that state’s early learning efforts. The aim of the new program will be to introduce a new service model to public libraries for library staff to deliver interactive programs for young children that will impact early childhood literacy. Thousands of U.S. public libraries offer programs, such as story time, for young children and are already attuned to early literacy best practices. The methodology and tools used in this model were researched, designed and tested by the University of Washington<http://www.idevmail.net/link.aspx?l=5&d=73&mid=363882&m=2185>, and piloted in 20 libraries in collaboration with Washington State Library from 2009 to 2014. The results showed that intentional focus on early literacy skills improved results for young children. The new service model, based on the rigorously researched and field-tested approach, can now be applied broadly to augment the efficacy of current library programs. About the Institute of Museum and Library Services The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation's 123,000 libraries and 35,000 museums. Another Great Review for "A Thousand Letters Home" program
by Jennifer Senger 15 Jul '14

15 Jul '14

Hello! I just wanted to recommend Teresa Irish's program "A Thousand Letters Home." We had her at our library last Thursday evening and couldn't have been happier. We are a smaller library, but we had about 50 patrons attend the program, which was great. We actually co-sponsored this program with our local history center due to our budget, but it was a great project to collaborate on. Teresa was very professional. She brought just about everything with her, so set up and tear down was very easy. She took time after the program to talk to attendees and sign her book. The patrons really enjoyed her program. Through letters and stories, she tells the story of her dad's life through WWII. What makes this program so successful, though, is the fact that many people can relate to his story. This is a great program for anyone who has served or who knows someone who has served our country. It's also great for anyone who enjoys learning about our nation's history. We had a multi-generational audience, which was awesome to see! For more information or to contact Teresa, go to: ATLH Home ATLH Home Check out http://athousandlettershome.com! FW: Libraries Need Your Help - E-Rate
by Trish Burns 15 Jul '14

15 Jul '14

Please read below and contact your rep today. E-rate funding is important to many types of libraries in Michigan and this amendment could be harmful. From: Emily Sheketoff [mailto:esheketoff@alawash.org] Sent: Monday, July 14, 2014 6:01 PM To: alacro-l(a)ala.org Subject: [alacro-l] Libraries Need Your Help Please call your U.S. Representative today and encourage him or her not to support any amendment that would thwart the FCC's ability to increase funds to the Federal E-rate program. Rumors are circulating around Capitol Hill this week of a possible amendment to the House Financial Services Appropriations bill that would limit the Federal Communication Commission's (FCC) ability to increase funds to the Federal E-rate program. We expect this amendment to be voted on the House floor sometime within the next 48 to 72 hours. If such an amendment were to pass and become law, it would be very damaging to the E-rate program. The E-rate program is part of the Universal Service Fund, which is overseen by the FCC. Through this program, libraries and schools receive discounts on telecommunications services including high capacity broadband. Many libraries count on these funds to provide internet services to their users.
