Planning for Self-Check

Hello Michigan Colleagues, I have been tasked with exploring best practices in Library Self-Check. Here in Missouri, the St Charles City-County Library District has a home-grown ILS. We are planning to develop and launch Self-Check across our 12 Branches in the next 12 months. Please consider contacting me directly at the email provided below with answers to these few questions. Deadline to register for April 10 Library Security program is today!

The deadline to register for next week's Securing Your Library in Troubling Times special program is today, April 2! This program has been approved for CEUs through the Library of Michigan and LEUs from the Indiana State Library You can attend this program in many ways! In person at the Lansing Community College West Campus, at one of our regional viewing parties throughout Michigan & Indiana or via live streaming video at your office! On April 10, 2014, in partnership with the Michigan State Police, the Cooperative Directors Association, & the Library of Michigan, MCLS will provide a program instructing and preparing librarians for a worst case scenario, an Active Shooter situation. The program will be held at the Lansing Community College West Campus and will be available through live web streaming for remote viewing either in your own office or at regional viewing parties throughout Michigan. Balancing the tenent of libraries as free and open spaces while ensuring the safety of staff and patrons is an ambitious challenge. There are bad actors and some so lost, they barely comprehend their actions. As stewards of our buildings, the charge for librarians is to prepare for the worst; arming ourselves first with knowledge, then acting accordingly. The morning session will consist of training from the Michigan State Police about personal safety and developing an Active Shooter policy and procedures. There will be a panel and presentation from librarians who have dealt with violence in their workplaces and/or undergone Active Shooter training in their library. The final session will be by Mark Alley who will present on the phases of critical incidents and crisis communication. This program is part of a series brought to you by the Cooperative Directors Association, the Library of Michigan and MCLS. This project is funded (in part) with a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the Library of Michigan. Life and Times of Shakespeare at the Northville District Library

The Northville District Library will present "The Life and Times of Shakespeare" on Wednesday, April 9 at 7 p.m. at the Library's main Carlo meeting room. This entertaining and lively talk sets the Bard against a rich description of Elizabethan times. Presenter Jim Glenn, former theater and speech educator, will surprise and delight the audience with intriguing details about the author, his life and work. Business Librarian Western Michigan University (WMU) seeks a creative and service-oriented Business Librarian to serve as a member of the reference and instruction unit. This librarian must possess the knowledge and expertise necessary to manage collections and deliver services and resources appropriate to WMU’s Carnegie classification as a "research university with high research activity." Playing a key role in the mission of WMU, this individual must employ collaborative approaches in the development of information literacy services and programs, and help promote a climate of scholarly research and inquiry. Michigan History Day Judges Still Needed! We could use your help! On Saturday, April 26, the Historical Society of Michigan will host over 400 students grades 4-12 who will compete in the state finals of National History Day. This exciting event takes place at Saline Middle School. We still need about 20 judges to help review the student entries! Volunteer judges serve from 8:00 a.m. until approximately 1:30 p.m. If you are willing, please sign up to judge before April 10 using the online registration page at http://www.hsmichigan.org/mhd/judges/ You do not need to have previous experience with Michigan History Day. As a judge, you’ll review entries in a given category as part of a judging team, conduct a brief interview with the students, write comments for the students to review, and then select two finalists. Judging for performances and exhibits will be done on the day of the competition. Papers, websites, and documentaries will be reviewed in advance. Interviews with students for all five categories will take place on the day of the event. If you plan to judge and register online, we will confirm your commitment via e-mail shortly after you register. We are ready to have our first meeting at the Canton Public Library on May 28th from 1-3pm.
