Hello , I am a librarian at Canton Public Library and also a member of of the Michigan Alliance for Cultural Accessibility<https://www.miculturalaccess.org/professional-development> <https://www.miculturalaccess.org/professional-development> (MACA). Last week MACA featured speaker Alayna Lail from the Division on Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing, (DODDBHH) in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights who presented on this very topic! The quick response is that any ASL interpreter offered as accommodation must be a qualified ASL interpreter<https://adata.org/factsheet/sign-language-interpreters> according to ADA Title III requirements. We had asked about having a staff member who is fluent or semi-fluent provide translation and while Alayna mentioned that some access is better than no access, that this did not equate to compliance under ADA, I highly recommend checking out the provided links or contacting DODDBHH directly with specific questions as they are marvelous and can help connect you with resources to meet patron needs and requests. I also recommend joining MACA<https://www.miculturalaccess.org/> as we offer several valuable trainings and a network of cultural institutions to connect with (AND its very library budget friendly to join!) Drop in gaming anti-theft procedures?
by Turbok, Joseph 23 Apr '25

23 Apr '25

Hello. While our library has Nintendo Switch game night program, we are thinking about having the system available for general drop in use. For any other libraries that do this, do you have a preferred anti-theft lock/device or method? Do you check them out while in use or do you take some kind of collateral. SAM.gov Expiration & For-Profit Companies
by Cynthia Stanczak 23 Apr '25

23 Apr '25

Hello all, Just received my first "spam" email from a for-profit business trying to convince me to click their link and use their service to renew our SAM.gov account, for the low, low price of $349. SAM.gov accounts expire yearly, BUT are completely free to renew and it takes only about 10 minutes (and three confirmation code verifications) to submit your renewal through SAM.gov. Especially if you or someone in your organization is new in that role or to SAM.gov this year, please forward this to them before they commit to sharing that information, including the library's banking information, to a for-profit company and paying for the privilege. This company in particular is USAFilingGuide.com and the email was titled "Your SAM Registration is Expiring - ALBION DISTRICT LIBRARY." The email is plain text, looks very much like an automated notification email, and includes our CAGE code, and SAM UEI. Just a heads up. Best wishes, folks! Cynthia Stanczak, MLS (she/her) Library Director Albion District Library 501 S. Superior St. Albion, MI 49224 (517) 629-3993 Albion District Library: Transforming Minds, Changing Lives. Proudly serving our community since 1919. Online at www.albionlibrary.org, or find us on Facebook! *My working day may not be your working day. Please do not feel obligated to reply to this email outside of your normal working hours.*

Marketing Professional at the Library
by Tracy Logan 22 Apr '25

22 Apr '25

Hello Collective of Wisdom, Do you employ someone at your library to oversee your marketing efforts? Or do you contract with someone for this service? We are exploring the idea of a marketing person on staff (or contract) and I would love to hear how you navigate this. How does it work? Are you seeing good results from those efforts? What size library are you? Thanks for your responses! -Tracy -- Tracy Logan Library Director Cadillac Wexford Public Library 411 S. Question re: integrated DVD collections
by Cameron Crawford 22 Apr '25

22 Apr '25

Greetings fellow library folk! Recently we had a feature DVD appear in the wrong collection on our shelf, as it is a French language film and ought to go to our world language DVD section. It was then lamented that the item's circ count was likely to go down, as materials in our world language collection (with the exception of MeL) have a notable lower circ stat. So we started brainstorming on the access services level as to what could be done to draw more attention to these items. The thought came up several times to integrate the world language DVD section with corresponding feature, non-feature, and TV series collections, while retaining the language label (the line of thought here being that patrons are not necessarily searching for materials on account of the language alone). Before presenting this suggested course of action to the collection manager, we wanted to send feelers out as to whether other libraries had already done such an integration: did you see an increase in circ counts for world language materials? Did patrons complain about the integration? Did shelving staff have a difficult time with it? Do you wish you could hit the rhetorical 'undo' button on this? We want to know! To spare folks a long email chain, direct messages are most appreciated - and if anyone is interested, I will collate the responses and share them. Lastly, if this is a topic that has been deliberated upon before, it would be immensely appreciated if someone would be able to forward that chain for our edification. Sincerely, --- Cameron Crawford he/him/his Library Assistant III - Page Supervisor Baldwin Public Library 248-554-4692 cameron.crawford(a)baldwinlib.org

Amazing program idea: Featuring Local Wrestler(s)
by Lisa Boyd 22 Apr '25

22 Apr '25

Hello library land, This weekend, we held WrestleFest, an expo-style event featuring "Amazing" N8 Mattson (a local wrestler). Nate talked about his 25+ years of experience in the industry and shared some pictures. He brought two championship belts and held a meet-and-greet-style table afterward, where he signed 8X10 photographs and posed for photos with patrons. I added some coloring sheets and a make-your-own wrestling belt craft that I created. As someone who does a decent amount of programs, I can say that this brought new patrons who were fans or interested in learning more. I have two contacts and a couple of pictures to share. Please contact "Amazing" N8 or Gary from IWR if you would like to consider a wrestling-themed event for your community. I am happy to answer any additional questions off-thread, so please email me directly with those. Hello, Thanks to the partnership with MLA, my library is considering contracting with Streamline to redo our website. Before they give the final go ahead, my board would like to know if anyone else partnered with them and if so, do you like it and are happy with the change? Thanks! Amy
