Clarke Speaker Series Event: Christopher Paul Curtis

Please join us for the annual Burgess Lecture featuring award-winning author, Christopher Paul Curtis, on Tuesday, September 24th, at 7 p.m. in the Opperman Auditorium, Park Library, Central Michigan University. In his talk, Making of an Author 101, Christopher Paul Curtis will trace his path to becoming a writer of historical fiction for young people and the importance certain people played along the way. His novels center on African-American families and tackle tough issues with humor and honesty. This year, he received the Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Library Association, which recognizes outstanding African-American authors, illustrators, and practitioners for lasting and significant contributions to youth or young adult literature. A reception will follow in the Clarke Historical Library. The David and Eunice Sutherland Burgess Lecture was endowed by the Burgesses to support authors, storytellers, and scholars to visit campus and talk about the enduring importance of storytelling. Library Vending Machine

Hello All, The Brandon Township Public Library is looking into getting a book vending machine for our service area to expand the number of patrons we reach. We wondered if any other library had such a machine and had a few questions about the machines and the libraries that have them. m - How much did the vending machine cost? - What is the class of your library? - If your vending machine is located at a private business, do you have an agreement with them? What sort of details does that include? - Does your vending machine have an insurance policy? - How successful has the vending machine been? This autobiographic book is a seamless blend of evocative black-and-white photographs and prose that weaves back and forth between the 1970s and today in and around the town of Newberry, Michigan. Wurdock’s lens wanders the landscape from main street of Newberry which recalls the bygone era of many of Michigan’s small towns to the “old, crumbling shacks” and “dilapidated and abandoned structures” he reaches by Jeep on an old two-track or subsequently on foot. Wisely, he obeys an internal shiver that warns him to keep out. Heaven knows what kind of injury you might sustain on a solo trip from such rural explorations. His camera is also invariably attracted to railroad engines and stations, logging and other industrial remnants that dot the Newberry area and surely many other locales of the U.P. Wurdock’s memoir roughly follows the seasons of a typical year, with asides along the way for the glories of the U.P’s extreme seasons. Along the way, like the reporter he is, he recounts memorable and colorful things in the life of Newberry such as the 44^th Independence Day Parade and its quirky traditions including the “water wars” between firemen and teenagers with water balloons, or the demise of the proprietor of the Tahqua Land Theater as it struggled to meet the digital age of projection. We learn about the importance of AM radio, such as the local station WNBY, to knit small communities together in land where cell service is iffy at best and people are on the move all day long.
