Giving Business owners library cards
by Miriam Andrus 04 Dec '14

04 Dec '14

Hello All, Do any of your libraries issue library cards to individuals who own a business within your service area but have their home residence outside of your service area? We have business owners who would like to get cards because they pay property taxes within our service area. However, their primary residence is outside of our service area. I would be interested to know if anyone has a policy regarding this type of situation. Thanks in advance. Miriam Andrus, Director Big Rapids Community Library 426 S. We give business owners and their employees cards that are valid here only. Since they pay taxes, they should get the services, that's what we feel. From the ALA Washington Office
by Christine Hage 03 Dec '14

03 Dec '14

On December 9, 2014, the American Library Association’s Washington Office will launch a new and reinvigorated *District Dispatch* blog that will highlight federal legislation and policy news that impacts libraries. The new *District Dispatch* makes it easier for library advocates to find important information policy news, search articles, share news and “drill down” further into national policy issues. The new *District Dispatch* also includes a “Breaking News” feature that makes it easier for advocates to find the most current and critical information they need to take action at the national level. Finally, the new blog makes it easier for library staff to find free policy-related webinars. As we head into a new Congress, ALA members are encouraged to subscribe to the *District Dispatch *to keep abreast of relevant library policy news, such as federal funding opportunities, copyright reform, open access legislation, Federal Communications Commission proceedings and much more. Visit the blog today: http://www.districtdispatch.org. Thanks! Public Libraries: How often should you change auditors?
by Frederick J. Kirby 03 Dec '14

03 Dec '14

Hello All, I am interested in learning if there are any official recommendations about how often a public library should change it's auditor. We have used the same auditor for the past seven audits of our financial records. We are quite satisfied with this firm, but we do not want to grow to comfortable or cozy. Are there any standards about this that might be helpful to us? Thanks for any assistance with this issue. Frederick J. Kirby, Library Director Benton Harbor Public Library 213 East Wall St. Benton Harbor, MI 49022 269-926-6139 (voice) 269-926-1674 (fax) libraryfjk(a)yahoo.com
