Program Recommendation: Teresa Irish
by Katie Ester 05 Dec '14

05 Dec '14

I know I've seen her name mentioned here at least once, but I can't resist putting one more recommendation in the mix for author Teresa Irish. Her book, A Thousand Letters Home: One WWII Soldier's Story of War, Love and Life chronicles her father's life and the discovery of his one thousand letters written from the Western Front of World War II. Her presentation, from the first word, was gripping and entertaining. By the end, we hadn't one dry eye in the house and many of our senior patrons were singing wartime radio ballads and folk favorites with her. I'm tempted to say that if you have a large senior population or a rabid base of WWII enthusiasts, this would be the program to feature. But truly, her program is universally appealing and our audience here at Shelby was rapt every minute. DVD Collection
by Jessica Wilhoite 05 Dec '14

05 Dec '14

Hi all, Here, at Romulus, we currently have a Juvenile and an Adult DVD collection. We are finding that we have a great deal of family movies and are currently splitting them between the Juvenile and Adult collections, based on their content - i.e. Harry Potter is in the Adult collection and The Mighty Ducks are in the kids collection. We are trying to figure out the best place for them. How do other libraries categorize their DVD collections? Do you go by ratings? Do you go by where the majority of other libraries house theirs? Do you keep your kids collection strictly to cartoons and everything else goes into the Adult collection? Any information would be helpful and appreciated. I am interested in hearing what bigger libraries do, but I would really like to hear from smaller libraries (like us) who do not have tons of space for many separate DVD collections. Thanks in advance and if anyone else wants the information I can send it to you after I pull all of the responses together. -- Jessica Wilhoite Youth Librarian Romulus Public Library 11121 Wayne Rd. MAP Update
by Jim Flury 05 Dec '14

05 Dec '14

All, I hope you enjoyed a nice Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends. The "menu" in our household featured turkey and bronchitis, and not necessarily in that order, either. But we made do nevertheless. You might recall that in our last MAP update from November 21, we made note as to the possibility of BIG news for statewide MAP Year 3. I'm happy to report that discussions regarding that are ongoing, and that we hope to be able to share additional details very soon. As of today you have circulated 92.5% of last year's total number of passes. That's great work! Do you think we can get to 100% of last year's total by December 31? I think you can. The holiday school break time is right around the corner, and families are going to be looking for activities during this time. How about a day out at http://www.mi-sci.org/ or http://sloanlongway.org/Sloan-Museum or http://www.yankeeairmuseum.org/ or http://www.lsa.umich.edu/ummnh/ Thanks to Brigette's hard work, our MAP Facebook page has nearly 300 likes https://www.facebook.com/pages/Michigan-Activity-Pass-MAP/510259192344845 and our Twitter account has almost 100 followers https://twitter.com/MapPass2014 Finally, in addition to the above I am currently engaged in a dialogue to "hook" a new MAP venue, beginning in January, 2015. Until and unless they formally sign on with MAP, and I'm pretty sure they will, I'll hold off revealing the identity of this potential new cultural partner. I will say that they would represent a great "catch" for MAP, and that I hope they will "sea" fit to join us. Thank you for your support and promotion of the Michigan Activity Pass program.
