MIX 2014 Call for Proposals extended

.... Please excuse duplication and share with others ... It's not too late! The deadline has been extended to May 16 for submitting breakout session proposals for the August 8 Michigan Instruction Exchange (MIX) conference hosted by Grand Valley State University Libraries. This informal, one-day conference will be held at GVSU's new Mary Idema Pew Library in Allendale, MI. Sessions (45 minute programs, which includes a 15-minute Q & A) should relate to information literacy instruction in one of the following disciplines: Business/Law Health Sciences Humanities Social Sciences STEM The MIX conference is a one-day, casual gathering of instructional ideas and perspectives. Morning and afternoon concurrent sessions will cover topics of information literacy instruction as they relate to five major academic disciplines. Proposals will be selected on the basis of discipline alignment, innovation, and relevance to information literacy instruction. Possible subjects could include (but are not limited to): Active learning Threshold concepts Unique or innovative lesson plans Classroom collaborations with faculty or beyond Connecting with discipline faculty to promote or develop IL instruction For consideration, please submit your name, institution, contact info, position, title of presentation, and abstract (150 word maximum) to mix14(a)gvsu.edu by May 16, 2014. Dear library colleagues, We would like to invite you, your staff & board members, and your community to attend the third session of our four-part Genealogy Series called: "A Bridge to the Past" on SATURDAY, MAY 3RD at 10:30AM. (Sponsored by the Friends of the Pinckney Library.) This third session is entitled: WHAT ARE GENEALOGY WEBINARS?--During the first part of this session, our presenter will explain what webinars are and how genealogists and researchers can use them as a great tool for learning more about your family or local history. How to find useful webinars and how to participate in them will also be covered. During the second part of the program, participants are given time to work together and help with attendees' personal research questions or "brick walls" they might have encountered in their research. There will be time for group help and brainstorming during each session. These workshops are free to the general public and refreshments will be served. We ask, however, that attendees call in advance to register so that we have a good count for how many handouts to print. We currently use a self-created and maintained database of the streets in our library district to be used when registering new patrons. This is cumbersome to maintain as we have to use USPS or other sites to see where new plats and divisions and streets are located.
