RFP Process for MeL Core Databases
by BiggThomas, Deb (MDE) 07 Jan '15

07 Jan '15

Hello Michigan Library Community! We are currently in the 4th year of our current contract for core eContent (i.e. databases) made available in the Michigan eLibrary and funded by LSTA. Normally the Library of Michigan does 3 year contracts with two 1 year extensions. The current contract will expire on September 30, 2015. We have, therefore, embarked on the RFP process for core resource content and have just begun the information gathering phase. The Library of Michigan will issue a RFP at the end of February 2015. To find out what the process entails, timelines and all manner of other information, just go to: http://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/0,2351,7-160-18668_39174_70693---… Of course, your feedback is always welcome! Budget question
by Sylvia Merz 07 Jan '15

07 Jan '15

Hello everyone, and Happy New Year to all. We are braving the blizzard, just like most of the rest of the State! I need some help from other libraries. I will going to our Township Board soon to ask for an increase in our annual operating budget for the coming fiscal year (yes, we are one of the last who receive a 'negotiated' yearly allocation rather than having a voted millage), and am hoping to have some data to share with them. Can you please tell me the following information: Total annual Operating Budget for most recent fiscal year: Percentage (or amount) funded by funding municipality or voted millage: Percentage (or amount) funded by Friends: Percentage (or amount) funded by other donations: Percentage (or amount) funded by State Aid & Penal Fines: Percentage (or amount) funded by in-house revenues (copies, fines, sales, etc): As always, I appreciate your help! ** Please excuse cross-postings ** ALCTS Midwinter Symposium Update CHICAGO — The Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) presents “Collection Development Strategies in an Evolving Marketplace: an ALCTS Midwinter Symposium,” a presentation of the ALCTS President’s Program Committee and organized by Michael Levine-Clark. Join your colleagues from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, January 30, 2015 at the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting in Chicago. The starting point for this symposium is the seminal article “Collection Directions: Some Reflections on the Future of Library Collections and Collecting” written by Lorcan Dempsey, Constance Malpas, and Brian Lavoie (OCLC) and freely available at http://www.oclc.org/content/dam/research/publications/library/2014/oclcrese…. The program explores strategies for selecting, acquiring and budgeting for new materials such as streaming media, unbundled content, and institutional open access models. Presenters address front line issues such as how to maximize resources to support user needs, how to manage unknown elements of these new models and how to market and build the library’s profile. The speakers will explore long term effects on our collections and how traditional collection development may be changing. Attendees will come away from this symposium with a greater understanding of how to implement new content and acquisition programs in their own libraries from these presentations: Big picture talk on how collections/collection development is evolving Demand-Driven Acquisition of Monographs Journals, articles on Demand New Forms of Content. What aren’t we doing (or are just starting) that should be part of CD? Panel Discussion: What is the future of collection development? Where do we go from here? City Library Code of Ordinances
by Anna Curtis 07 Jan '15

07 Jan '15

I recently became the director of a small city library and one of the projects I inherited was updating the city's code of ordinances. The problem is I am coming from a district library background and have no experience in this. The last time the Library ordinance was updated was in 1974 so my guess is that it will need some revamping, but that's about as much as I am willing to say at this point. Can anyone help me with this or provide me with their own city ordinances as an example? Thank you! Anna M. Curtis, Director City of Eaton Rapids Public Library 220 S. Responses for question on circulation systems
by Margaret Bentley 07 Jan '15

07 Jan '15

Last month I requested information on circulation systems being used by smaller libraries. The response I received were: *System* *Library* *Comments* SirsDynix Horizon St. Charles District Lib. Member of Valley Library Consortium Auto-Graphics Verso Bad Axe District Lib. NCIP compliant with MeLCat Auto-Graphics Verso Milan Public Lib. Atriuum (Book Systems) Elk Rapids District Lib. Easy to use; not yet NCIP compliant but close Evergreen Niles District Library more user friendly with each upgrade There were also a couple of requests for the information. I apologize for the delay in compiling this, but we really appreciate those libraries who responded to our request. -- Margaret Bentley Adult Services Librarian Shiawassee District Library--Owosso 502 W. NEC phone systems
by Melissa Malcolm 07 Jan '15

07 Jan '15

Hi all-- I just received, out of the blue, invoices for an "annual software assurance program" from our phone vendor, indicating that as of January 1, NEC requires this on all of their systems. I'm interested in knowing if any of you with a NEC system got this surprise, and if so, what you're being charged. Thanks so much for your time. melissa -- Melissa A. Affordable USB drives?
by Andrea Estelle 07 Jan '15

07 Jan '15

Hi All, I would like to purchase some USB flash drives to have available for sale at our circulation desk, maybe about 16 GB or 32 GB in storage in the $5 or less range. Have not found them at that low of a price though. Does anyone have a good and affordable vendor for these or know of a place where I can get a bulk discount? Thanks! Technology in the Children's Department
by Mary Beth Reasoner 07 Jan '15

07 Jan '15

Dear All, especially Children's Librarians and Youth Librarians - As part of Tecumseh District Library's current Strategic Plan, we are investigating adding technology to our Children's Area and Collection. We have a healthy circulating Children's AV collection of DVDs, Talking Books on CDs, Read-Alongs, and Music CDs; now we want to add forms of current technology to the mix. We already have 18 computers available for public use (patrons of all ages) in the main section of the library, but this is a completely different service/collection specifically aimed at children (and their parents) which we are investigating., *Background:* In the past, we had a Computer set up in the Children's Area for the purpose of playing children's educational games on CD-ROMs; it was *not* hooked up to the Internet. We had both an in-house collection of Children's CD-ROMs and a circulating collection, which included preschool and early elementary titles such as Berenstain Bears, Clifford, Sesame Street, I Spy, Curious George, Nancy Drew, American Girl, Amazon Trail, etc., etc. While these collections were popular from the beginning, they grew to be problematic as newer programs came out which would not run on our aging in-house Children's computer, despite their stated compatibility. It also became difficult trying to decide which circulating programs to order that were compatible with the wide variety of patrons' home computers and operating systems. We eventually withdrew these collections as circulation decreased and the aging computer eventually died. So, it is time to start over again with fresh ideas and a variety of current technical formats. *Questions:* What kind of *in-house technology* do you provide in your Children's Section? What kind of *circulating technology collections* do you provide in your Children's Section? What kind of upkeep do the circulating collections require after each circulation? Pros and Cons? Price points? Brands/Vendors/Titles to consider for each format? Words of advice? Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and wisdom with TDL on this new venture!
