Braille and Talking Book Library Demo Sites
by Wambaugh, Stephanie (LARA) 12 Jan '15

12 Jan '15

I wanted to pass on a few words of thanks to all the public libraries that became demonstration sites for the Braille and Talking Book Library (BTBL) in 2014. We currently have 35 locations signed up with us and are adding more every week! If your library location is interested in becoming a demo site, please feel free to email me back off-list. For those of you unfamiliar with our free service, BTBL offers audio books, magazines, and braille titles to Michigan residents with visual or physical disabilities that are unable to utilize standard print materials. Demo sites are issued a digital talking book machine, a book on cartridge, and promotional materials to display at the discretion of each location. For more information about this program, view our webinar at: http://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/0,2351,7-160-18668_63014-301245--… Each location varies in the way they promote our service, but all the efforts are very much appreciated! A special thanks to Grosse Pointe Public Library for sending me a picture of their display case highlighting the BTBL service (photo attached: it shows a decorated display case with our equipment inside and flyers hanging up explaining the service). Thank you GPPL! Stephanie Wambaugh Reader Advisor, Outreach & Youth Librarian BSBP Braille & Talking Book Library P.O. Box 30007 702 W. Movie discussion group
by Nancy Folaron 12 Jan '15

12 Jan '15

We have recently purchased a license for showing movies, and have some patrons interested in starting a movie discussion group. Just wondering if there are libraries that have tried this? We would show the movie and then follow immediately with discussion. If you have done this at your library any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. Thanks, Nancy Folaron -- Nancy Folaron, Assistant Director Shiawassee District Library/Durand Memorial Branch 700 N. Saginaw St. Durand, MI 48429 989-288-3743

Covering paperbacks and Accounting
by Galesburg Charleston Memorial District Library 11 Jan '15

11 Jan '15

Hello, all. What do you all use for covering your paperbacks? The staff at my new library is using packing tape! I'm not sure what is the best type of film to use, or where is the cheapest place to purchase. On the accounting front... we recently became a district library and are in the process of getting all of our finances set up. I was told several years ago that we should use the uniform chart of accounts from the state when doing our budgets and accounting. Is this a requirement for us as a "government entity?" If it isn't, what system do you use? If it is, or even if it isn't but you use it anyway, would you be willing to share your budget (minus the amounts) with me so that I can copy it? Thanks in advance for your answers! If you can reply to me off-list, I would greatly appreciate it. Helena Helena Hayes, Director Galesburg Charleston Memorial District Library

Kim the Piper - Bagpipe Program
by Mary Ann DeKane 10 Jan '15

10 Jan '15

> > Hi, > If you're looking for a very interesting and different program to host, I recommend Kim Johnson (Kim the Piper). She performed today here at the Royal Oak Public Library. Not only does she entertain the audience with bagpipes, the session was very educational with demonstrations of 3 different types of bagpipes, historical facts and a thorough description of the kilts/costumes, and she even taught a Scottish dance at the end. I have cc'd her on this email if you'd like to contact her. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me. Update on Delivery of Federal Tax Forms
by Debbie Gallagher 10 Jan '15

10 Jan '15

>From the IRS this afternoon, finally. Please note there will be no instructions in the package. TFOP Filing Season Update While we had committed to waiting until next year to making changes to the Tax Forms Outlet Program, the situation has changed. As you may be aware, IRS appropriations were significantly cut in the 2015 Omnibus Appropriations bill recently passed by Congress. Unfortunately this puts us in a position where we have very few options. We want to honor our commitment to you by providing some key products, but we cannot deliver nearly what we have in the past. For this filing season, we will offer the following products:Forms 1040, 1040A and 1040EZPublication 17, one reference copy for each participant (Taxpayers will be able to access Publication 17 in English and Spanish online from irs.gov/Pub17 and, new this year, it will also be available as a free e-Pub for downloading from IRS.gov and viewing on most e-Readers and other mobile devices.)Publication 4604 (EN/SP), Use the Web for IRS Tax Products & InformationPublication 1132, Reproducible Copies of Federal Tax Forms and InstructionsThe TFOP Poster Package which includes:o Publication 1169, Need Tax Help?o Publication 1258, Where Should I Send This?o Publication 1309, Tax Forms This Way Publicationo Publication 1725, If The Form Fits...Use It! No additional products will be available through the TFOP Program. We will not be sending Form 8635-S, Supplement to Form 8635. We will fill orders for Forms 1040 and 1040A with the quantities you requested on your order form earlier this year. Because Form 1040EZ was not on this year's order form, we will send you 75% of your Form 1040 A order quantity. For example, if you ordered 3000 Form 1040 A, we will send you 2250 Form 1040EZ. It is not necessary for you to place an order for Form 1040EZ; we will automatically ship Form 1040EZ to you once the form becomes available. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer Instructions for Forms 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ. Your patrons can obtain copies of Instructions through:IRS.gov/Forms - to view and downloadIRS.gov/orderforms - to order tax products to be delivered by mail1-800-829-3676 - to order tax products to be delivered by mailThe decision to reduce the number of tax products available to our TFOP partners was not made lightly. We realize this decision is not ideal and we understand it may impact you and your customers. Please offer Publication 4604 (EN/SP) to your patrons to help guide them to tax products and information available on IRS.gov. We apologize for these late program changes. Thank you for your support,IRS TFOP Administrator

MeLCat!
by Sheryl Mase 09 Jan '15

09 Jan '15

I could not be online this morning, but I wanted to say happy birthday to MeLCat, our state’s statewide catalog and resource sharing system. It is hard to believe it has been ten years since we went live! It took a lot of talking with vendors, surveying library staff, surveying the public, learning from pilot projects, looking at other states, crafting specifications, evaluating responses, negotiating a contract, and figuring out statewide delivery before we could finally implement the system. I am proud of our collaboration and sharing, and hope to see it grow even more in the future. We are stronger when we work together ;-) Stay warm everybody! -Sheryl Mase
