I am trying to help my niece find a storyteller for a school program. She teaches in the Fulton District and is interested in the names and contact info for anyone who would be willing to do a program for lower elementary in that area. Please respond to me off the list. Thank you. -- Margaret Bentley Adult Services Librarian Shiawassee District Library--Owosso 502 W. Main Owosso, MI 48867 989-725-5134

Building Issues
by Christine Hage 15 Jan '15

15 Jan '15

I need some advice on fire alarm and security panels. Our panels are 22 years old and it appears we need to update them. - Have any of you had experience with wireless security in a large public building? - Do you have separate monitoring services for HVAC, fire and water? - Is you system directly wired from pull station or smoke detector to the alarm system or do you use hubs? I’d like to talk with someone who may have recently gone through this type of upgrade. I’d like to talk with a facility manager or other person that might have experience in this area. Feel free to forward my message to anyone that might be willing to talk with me Christine Lind Hage, President, United for Libraries Library Director, Rochester Hills Public Library 500 Olde Towne Road Rochester, MI 48307-2043 248/650-7122 Raising a reader is: Talking * Singing * Reading * Writing * Playing

Adult Program Recommendation
by Elizabeth Campion 15 Jan '15

15 Jan '15

The Shelby Township Library has now hosted two programs by Chef Jake Williams. The first was "The Art and Science of Cooking" which we held last summer as part of our Summer Reading series for adults.Chef Jake presented a detailed fascinating program with lots of group participation about how food flavors and cooking techniques work together. He was here again, this time presenting "Better Eating in the New Year" which was also well received. As it is the time of year of recovery from December's indulgences, he focused on integrating more healthy foods into our diets. He brings his own pots, pans, and gas burners so he can cook right in the library which enhanced the program. Chef Jake has 20 years in the cooking industry. He currently works for Gleaners Food Bank as the Cooking Matters Coordinator, helping low-income families learn to cook healthy food for little money. He also does catering and runs a pop-up restaurant in the Detroit Area. He is both knowledgeable and personable. He is open to doing more presentations in libraries. Jake Williams 586-360-8404 -- *The library is not, as some would have it, a place for the retiring of disposition or faint of heart. It is not an ivory tower or a quiet room in a sanitarium facing away from the afternoon sun. It is, rather, a command center, a power base. A board room, a war room. An Oval Office for all who preside over their own destinies. One does not retreat from the world here; one prepares to join it at an advantage.” ― Eric Burns, The Joy of Books: Confessions of a Lifelong Reader*

E-Rate - Consider not starting on the Form 471 today
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 14 Jan '15

14 Jan '15

Greetings, While there has been a lot of communication urging libraries to file the Form 471 early I would like to pass on that EdTech Strategies, the contractor paid by the Library of Michigan to provide expert E-Rate assistance through the co-op directors, is recommending: For today, my best advice would be to urge your libraries to wait a bit before trying to submit applications. Testing that took place on Monday proved frustrating and we are hoping for changes to be made to the form even at this point. In addition, SLD will likely issue some tips, guidance and so forth to help with the current form. While it will be important to get started early, waiting a week or two might help in terms of either fixes or guidance that might help to reduce some of the issues that are likely to occur when trying to complete the form. Good morning, I have a few questions for all of my follow librarians regarding building insurance. Who do you have your insurance through? Are you billed annually? If you are a township, city, or county library are you insured through the municipality or have your own coverage? Thank you in advance for your assistance.
