Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War Through October 31, 2014 Delta College Library Learning Information Center One of the most prestigious traveling exhibitions, "Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War," is on display in the Delta Library Learning Information Center until October 31, 2014. The traveling exhibition is funded by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to the National Constitution Center where it was organized with the assistance of the American Library Association Public Programs Office. Dr. Michael Burlingame is the Distinguished Chair in Lincoln Studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield. He taught history for much of his academic career at Connecticut College in New London. He is the author of many books on President Lincoln and the Civil war, including "Abraham Lincoln: A Life," which won the 2010 prize for the finest scholarly work in English on Abraham Lincoln or the American Civil War solider. James McPherson, a historian, wrote in the New York Review of Books, "Michael Burlingame knows more about Abraham Lincoln than any other living person." Dr. Burlingame currently lives in Springfield, Illinois, where he is working on several Lincoln projects. Wednesday October 29 7 PM Delta College Lecture Theater (room G160) This event at Delta College will give spectators the opportunity to re-live the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858. Using the actual words of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas, actors will rehash the debates over slavery, in the context of the time. This eye-opening event will raise awareness of attitudes toward slavery and race in the 19th century. Due to the sensitive nature of the material, the program is recommended for middle school-age through adult audiences. After the one-hour debate, audience members will be invited to ask questions of Lincoln and Douglas, played by Fred Priebe and Len Steinberg, respectively. Write Michigan Short Story Contest

Hello Everyone, Please feel free to share information about the third annual Write Michigan Short Story Contest<http://www.writemichigan.org/> with your patrons, friends groups, book discussion group, writers groups and board members. We've had many writers tell us that they learned about the contest through their public library and we greatly appreciate your help in getting out the word! There is a complete media kit available here<http://writemichigan.org/media.html> including posters, flyers and web graphics in several sizes. Now in its third year, the basic principles of Write Michigan remain-Write a short story, Vote for your favorite, Win and be published. Write Michigan is open to all ages with three categories: a Youth Category for writers ages 11 and under, a Teen Category for writers ages 12-17 and an Adult Category for ages 18 and up. Youth and Teen submissions are free. The Adult story submission fee is $10. Deadline for submissions is November 30. There are three cash prizes awarded for each category: Judges' Choice ($250), Judges' Choice Runner-up ($100) and the popular vote Readers' Choice Award ($250). Winning stories are published in an anthology by Chapbook Press. Winners will be honored during an Awards Ceremony and book signing at Schuler Books and Music, 2660 28th St. SE, Grand Rapids, on Saturday, March 21, 2015. The keynote speaker and writer of the foreword to the 2015 Write Michigan Anthology, will be Susan Dennard<http://susandennard.com/>, author of the Something Strange and Deadly series. FOML 2014 Outstanding Friends Group Merit Award

Did your Friends of the Library carry out an outstanding project or a number of successful activities in your community during 2014 that had a significant impact on your library’s services to the community? The FOML Outstanding Friends Group Merit Award will be given to a Michigan Friends group for a specific project carried out in 2014 or based on the full scope of the group’s activities during 2014. Applications will be judged by the FOML Membership & Marketing Committee on the following criteria: *Planning:* Involvement of the Friends, library, and community in the use of resources, an innovative and appropriate activity, and measurable outcomes (e.g., attendance at event, increase in patron use of the library, etc.). *Implementation:* Public relations, broad membership involvement, and use of resources. *Evaluation:* Assessment of activity or program with measurable results. *Innovation:* New idea(s) for program or activity, creative involvement of community and specific citizens, and creative use of public relations. *Community Involvement*: Evidence of community involvement in planning and implementation. The winning Friends group will receive $400 and a plaque, with an invitation for two members of the winning Friends Group to attend the FOML Annual Membership Meeting and Workshop free of charge in April of 2015 to receive the award. To be eligible for this award, *your Friends group must be a 2014 FOML member* (membership information can be found at www.foml.org) and completed the project or activities during the 2014 calendar year. MLA Technology and Trends CFP--deadline in a month!

The Michigan Library AssociationTechnologies & Trends work group is seeking proposals for presentations at the MLA’s 2015 Technologies and Trends workshop. This one-day event, on June 5, 2015, at Grand Valley State University, Allendale, Michigan, will attract a wide variety of library practitioners-- and is being keynoted by Michael Stephens, Library Journal columnist and creator of the Tame the Web blog. The work group is seeking proposals for sessions from public, academic, special, and school-library professionals and staff that will share new library technologies or introduce innovative ways libraries can use technology to be more effective and efficient. Possible topics could include but are not limited to updates on discovery systems, the library staff-IT relationship, technology for improving accessibility for people with disabilities, copyright, and responsive web design.
