BedTime Math
by Andy Schuck 22 Jan '15

22 Jan '15

Thanks to everyone who responded re: my question about BedTime Math. I've compiled the results below. BedTime Math no longer allows the program to be run during the summer months since much of the program is cumulative and there were a lot of absences with vacations, etc. We are going to begin hosting ours in the fall. Best, Andy ------------ Andy Schuck Head of Youth Services William P. Faust Public Library of Westland 6123 Central City Parkway Westland, MI 48185 734-326-6123, ext. 2844 www.westlandlibrary.org Raising a reader is: Talking * Singing * Reading * Writing * Playing If anyone happens to be going to ALA Midwinter, BedTime Math will be one of the exhibitors. I will be going and plan to stop by their booth. Personally, and from what I can tell so far, I think their program is a good way for libraries to contributing to the STEM effort in K-12. I have the materials and I am impressed with what I see. I don't know how it will go over mainly because of the 8 week requirement. I expect kids to miss one or two over the 8 week period due to vacations. Because of the possible absence of kids each week it seems good that each lesson is independent of the others. I did notice that the Crazy 8 program is now asking for the program to be scheduled during the school year and NOT over the summer. I applied last year so they sent me the materials but I don't know if they will still allow a summer program. Brenda Dunseth Youth Services Department Head Highland Township Public Library They are partnering with the Collaborative Summer Library Program (aka Summer Reading) and we have a webinar on using the program that Bed Time Math did for us last year on the Library of Michigan web site. Re: [Michlib-l] Looking for a Musical
by Janet O'Keefe 22 Jan '15

22 Jan '15

My money is on West Side Story. Banishment fits Romeo and Juliet and the dressmaking sounds like "I Feel Pretty". Admittedly, it's been years since I saw it, but that might be it. Janet T. O'Keefe Librarian Flint Public Library 1026 E. Kearsley Flint MI 48502 810-232-7111 Message: 3 Date: Wed, 21 Jan 2015 13:54:04 -0500 From: Tracy Wilson <tracymwilson8(a)gmail.com> To: michlib-l(a)mail2.mcls.org Subject: [Michlib-l] Looking for a musical Message-ID: <CAAcKhmJ5PwqmQqK5gOeGdtaA-ZugusuiXcYKcGyysYLh6-AV+A(a)mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Hi all, I had a younger patron come in yesterday looking for a musical she saw in a choir class last year, but she can't remember the title. Here's what she remembers: The main character commits a crime and has to stay out of the city - he goes somewhere to hide - she thinks it's Virginia. She also remembers a scene with a group of women shopping for fabric to make a dress (maybe a wedding dress) and the women make fun of the person making the dress - she remembers them calling her chicken legs. She also said the musical was really old, but she also said another movie from 2006 was really old (she's 12) so take that part with a grain of salt. Does anyone know this musical? Thanks! Tracy

Galesburg Historical Museum
by Jim Flury 22 Jan '15

22 Jan '15

All, Please see the link to the attached article in yesterday's Detroit Free Press. Perhaps someone on the west side of the state can reach out to Mr. Martin, to tell him about the publicity the Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) program http://michiganactivitypass.info would bring to his museum. And it is only going to get better starting May 24, 2015 when the expansion of MAP to encompass the Park and Read program http://www.mrpaonline.org/Programs/MI-Big-Green-Gym#.VMDqLS6VlCA will take place. Our new partnership with the DNR and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan will result in media opportunities for MAP that have not been available to us in the past. As with the Galesburg Historical Museum, please feel free to reach out to any and all cultural venues in your communities that you feel would make good partners with MAP. Talk up the program, and/or send your potential contacts my way. http://www.freep.com/story/news/columnists/john-carlisle/2015/01/21/galesbu… Jim Jim Flury Technical Services Manager The Library Network 41365 Vincenti Court Novi, MI 48375 248-536-3100 x133 Fax 248-536-3098 jflury(a)tln.lib.mi.us
