by Lisa Waskin 31 May '16

31 May '16

We are very pleased to announce that. SUPERIOR DISTRICT LIBRARY ONE OF 77 ORGANIZATIONS NATIONWIDE TO RECEIVE AN NEA BIG READ GRANT The Superior District Library, made up of eight libraries throughout the Eastern Upper Peninsula, is a recipient of a grant of $9,000 to host the NEA Big Read in our various communities. A program of the National Endowment for the Arts, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. The Superior District Library is one of only 77 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive a grant to host an NEA Big Read project between September 2016 and June 2017. The NEA Big Read will focus on The Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Activities will take place during September and October of 2016. Jane Chu, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, said, "I have the opportunity to travel around the country and see the way the arts can inspire, allow for reflection, and create new experiences. I look forward to the creative ways these 77 organizations will bring their communities together around a great work of literature through their participation in the NEA Big Read." Managed by Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read offers grants to support innovative community reading programs designed around a single book. The program supports organizations across the country in developing community-wide reading programs which encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences. Organizations selected to participate in the NEA Big Read receive a grant, access to online training resources and opportunities, and educational and promotional materials designed to support widespread community involvement. The Superior District Library will be partnering with various local organizations, including Lake Superior State University, the Kenneth J. Shouldice Library of LSSU, the Chippewa County Historical Society, the Upper Peninsula Paranormal Research Society, and the Ojibwe Learning Center and Library. Programs will be for all age groups, across our eight communities, and will include books talks, author visits with Frederick Stonehouse, cemetery walks, story times and programs, presentations by the UPPRS, trivia nights, school programs, and much more. Times and dates will be announced soon on the Superior District Library Facebook page, as well as our affiliate libraries. Our kickoff event is scheduled for Sunday, September 11th from 1:00pm-4:00pm at the Crow's Nest in the Cisler Center on the Lake Superior State University's campus. The event will be a family oriented Open House, complete with refreshments one would have seen at a typical 1830's afternoon tea, games and activities, and perhaps even a visit from Edgar Allan Poe himself. The event is free and open to the public, and parking will be available on campus. hello to each of you! Houghton Lake Public Library is pleased to announce that we have been selected by the major library vendor, Demco, to pilot a new fundraising effort that they are hoping to build for libraries across America that will work to benefit our library sevice to the children in our community. HLPL is ideally situated on the Houghton Lake Community School campus and has become a popular after school destination for the students. Our recent re-design has given us more space and more students. To create a truly engaging environment that continues to attract students we are enhancing out hangout space. The greatest need in this effort is to provide additional seating. Through a generous grant from one of our vendors, for every 4 chairs we fund, they will provide a 5th one for free. Help us to take advantage of this opportunity! by Amber Clement - PIDL 31 May '16

31 May '16

Presque Isle District Library Invites Book Lovers to 'Read All About It' with Author Scott M. Peters Presque Isle District Library welcomes Scott M. Peters - author of Making Waves: Michigan's Boat-Building Industry, 1865-2000 (University of Michigan Press). Peters will make a special visit to the Rogers City library at 7:00 pm on Thursday, June 16, for an evening of first-rate storytelling; book signing and question-and-answer time with guests. Peters is visiting the Rogers City library as part of the Library of Michigan's 2016 "Michigan Notable Authors Tour." This year, several authors whose engaging works were chosen as 2016 Michigan Notable Books selections will visit nearly 50 libraries throughout the state. The Presque Isle District Library, Rogers City is located at 181 E. Erie Street, Rogers City. For details about this author event, call 989-734-2477 or visit the website at www.pidl.org. "It's a literary treat to have Scott M. Peters in our community, sharing his captivating work with our friends and neighbors in such an open, accessible way," said Anne Belanger, Program Director. "Michigan is home to some of the best stories and storytellers found anywhere in the country. An author of Scott M. Peters' caliber here, in our library, will make it an evening to remember." "This year's Michigan Notable Books delve into wonderfully diverse topics and offer something of interest for just about everyone," said State Librarian Randy Riley. "The tour offers the opportunity for book enthusiasts in many corners of the state to join in the conversation about what constitutes 'great writing' and to hear from some of the Great Lakes region's most beloved authors." Scott M. Peters was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, and graduated from the University of Michigan-Flint with a degree in History. He received a master's degree in History and Museum Studies from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and interned at the Great Lakes Historical Society. He has worked at the Alfred P. Sloan, Jr. Museum in Flint, the International Center for Artificial Organs and Transplantation in Cleveland, and for the past 30 years at the Michigan Historical Museum, where he is the Curator of Collections. Scott's passion for boating came from many rides in boats as a child on Hubbard Lake, and he became interested in Great Lakes shipping from camping excursions near the Soo Locks and at Algonac State Park. He has written articles on maritime subjects for Michigan History and other journals. Michigan Notable Books is designed to promote reading and raise awareness of Michigan's literary heritage. The program annually selects 20 of the most outstanding books published in that year - titles that are reflective of Michigan's diverse ethnic, historical, literary and cultural experience. The 2016 Michigan Notable Books program and tour are made possible thanks to the generous support of the Library of Michigan, the Library of Michigan Foundation, Michigan Department of Education, the Michigan Humanities Council, Meijer, and the Michigan Center for the Book. by Jim Flury 31 May '16

31 May '16

All, I am pleased to report that since our May 24 go live, the number of hits to the newly redesigned MAP website is a bit over 21,000. Not bad when you consider that the total number of hits to the old site in the previous twelve months was about 560,000. Our goal is 1,000,000 hits this year, and we are certainly off to a strong start in that regard. Also, please welcome our newest partner to MAP! A great big hello to the Outdoor Adventure Center, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, http://www.michigan.gov/oac/ our 429th MAP destination. Thank you for your support and promotion of the Michigan Activity Pass program.
