Mac question
by COO Lavonne Marshall 01 Jun '16

01 Jun '16

Hello All, My library received a grant to purchase two IMac computers. I would like to install some kind of software like Deepfreeze to essentially lock them down so the public cannot download anything to them. Deepfreeze does offer a Mac version but I found that it will not work with the newest Mac that we purchased. If you have a product like Deepfreeze that you use to secure your Mac computers can you share that information with me please? Thanks LaVonne Marshall Director Coopersville Area District Library 333 Ottawa Street Coopersville MI 49404 616-837-6809 "If you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely" Roald Dahl

Michigan Activity Pass Statistics Now Available On The Library Network Homepage
by Jim Flury 01 Jun '16

01 Jun '16

All, Thanks to John Inman at TLN, we are now able to post MAP stats for ALL Michigan libraries to the TLN homepage. Click this link http://tln.lib.mi.us/map/stats/ to see May's MAP stats for your library. By way of explanation the number to the left of the library name under the Monthly Statistics by Library & Attraction stat set indicates the number of checkouts at that library for that particular destination that month. 3 Allegan District Library|Nelis Dutch Village means three checkouts at Allegan District Library for Nelis Dutch Village for May, 2016. We will be posting MAP stats for both TLN and non-TLN member libraries to the TLN homepage every month. You voted! THE SHALLOWS selected as 2016 Libraries Read: 1 Book community read
by David 01 Jun '16

MCLS Announces "Libraries Read: 1 Book" Title Selection Lansing--"Is Google making us stupid?" Nicholas Carr asked, in a celebrated Atlantic Monthly cover story. Carr delves further into the question in his book The Shallows: What the Internet is doing to our brains, the selected title for "Libraries Read: 1 Book." MCLS invited library staff across Indiana and Michigan to place votes on one of four titles to select one book that we will all read and discuss together for professional development. Nicholas Carr's book captured the most votes. In The Shallows, he explores the net's intellectual and cultural consequences. MCLS encourages library staff to read the book throughout June and July, then join us in a live Twitter chat about the book on Thursday, July 21 at 2pm eastern at #MCLSchat. Regional discussions will also be announced and take place in early August. According to Randy Dykhuis, MCLS Executive Director, "During 2014, MCLS conducted a series of community conversations with librarians throughout Indiana and Michigan, utilizing the tools from the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation. The desire to have discussions in many formats, and to communicate with one another outside of our silos was a recurring theme. By reading one book together, we aim to create deeper connections among libraries that span geographic and other boundaries." For more information about "Libraries Read: 1 Book", contact Michelle Bradley at Bradleym(a)mcls.org<mailto:Bradleym@mcls.org>, visit our Facebook page or read our blog. https://www.facebook.com/mcls.org/ About MCLS: The Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS) is a non-profit, member-driven organization whose mission is to facilitate sharing resources and to collaborate with other organizations to benefit Michigan and Indiana libraries. Reminder: Library Snapshot Day June 13-17 #MiLibSnap
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 01 Jun '16

01 Jun '16

The Library of Michigan is spearheading an American Library Association (ALA) initiative this summer called Library Snapshot Day. It's a time for libraries to get out and use data to demonstrate the value and impact they have on their communities. In Michigan we're going to share this data via social media. Participation takes place during the week of June 13-17. You can participate one day or every day, and contribute via social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest using the hashtag #MiLibSnap. The event is scheduled after conference season and is well situated to support summer reading participation. We suggest that you pull stats out of your annual report or collect data such as door counts between now and snapshot day. The objective is to share the impact of your library on your community in eye-catching ways. Some ideas for demonstrating that impact include: Use photos of the staff and facilities to personalize and put a face on your library; promote programming activities, outreach events, author tours, genealogy, and local history resources; and use stats such as circulation numbers or door counts to make your point. Get creative. You already know what you do best. Check out the tools below for creating great visuals. essential oil class at the library
by Marsh, Nyama 31 May '16

31 May '16

Hello Everyone, We received the email below, asking to give a class on essential oils. Given that it is a controversial topic for “health” (i.e. some think they can “cure” ailments and others consider it snake oil), I am wondering: 1) If any of you have had essential oil classes at your library and did you limit how they presented the info? 2) Do you have any policies about what “health” classes are allowed or not allowed? 3) Do you get complaints if you don’t allow such a class or complaints if you DO allow them? FYI, I use essential oils, so I am pro-oil – but I don’t talk about them at work and know the FDA has communicated with Young Living Oils regarding miscommunication of essentials oils’ ability to “cure” or “treat” illnesses. This is a quagmire I went to be very careful about wading into at the public library. http://www.fda.gov/ICECI/EnforcementActions/WarningLetters/2014/ucm416023.h… Thoughts and feedback are appreciated. Original email: Hi - I am interested in teaching a class at the library, if you are interested. I am passionate about educating people on how to use essential oils take care of their families naturally. I noticed you have a variety of events and classes on the online calendar. I would love the opportunity to teach some classes on essential oils. Please let me know if you are interested. Thank you, Thank you and have a wonderful day, Nyama Nyama Y.
