Go West, Young MAP

All, The subject line is a slightly modified version of a quote that is generally attributed to Horace Greeley. Whether Greeley was truly responsible for this catchphrase of American folklore is for people who are far more intelligent than I am to decide. What I do know, however is that the mission of MAP is to explore new worlds, to seek out new MAP destinations, and to boldly go where no MAP has gone before. Etc. To that end, to reach either of our two brand new partner destinations, at least from where I am typing these lines, you need to head north. While on your way, take a break and stop in at our newest MAP venue, Mackinaw Area Historical Society Heritage Village http://www.mackinawhistory.org/ Then, cross that big bridge, turn left, and drive west. If you see people wearing cheese on their heads that means you are in Wisconsin. You've gone too far. Instead, stop when you get to Wakefield and visit our other new MAP partner, the Wakefield Historical Society Museum http://www.hsmichigan.org/resources/local-historical-organizations/wakefiel… Their website may be a work in progress, but don't let that discourage you (or your patrons). The launch of newly expanded MAP is only about six weeks away. We are working to prepare new press material, a new brochure, etc. It is our belief that the addition of the seven National Park Service destinations to MAP will give the program yet another big boost for 2016-2017. That, combined with your much appreciated hard work to promote and publicize the program, should result in even better awareness and usage of MAP during the upcoming program cycle. Breaking news from CSLP!

CSLP, the Collaborative Summer Library Program<http://www.cslpreads.org/>, held their Annual Meeting last week in Salt Lake City, UT. For those who do not know the CSLP is a consortium of states, founded in 1987, that work together to "provide a unified summer reading theme along with professional art and evidence-based materials so that member libraries can provide high-quality summer reading programs at the lowest possible cost and to play a significant role in literacy initiatives." It's a 3-day meeting where a lot of discussion, brainstorming and planning is done for summer reading clubs across the country. The manuals (now on CD) your library receives every year for planning summer reading are worked on years ahead of time! In fact, "Build a Better World" manuals are in their final stages for the summer of 2017. Some of the big decisions made last week are the following: Summer Reading 2017: the slogan is "Build A Better World" * Early Lit/Youth Illustrator is: David Maculay (attached) * Teen Illustrator is: Scott Sosebee (attached) * Adult Illustrator is: Larry Jones (attached) Overall, the Annual Meeting Attendees loved the art work and found it to be diverse and interchangeable, depending if your location is going more towards the "building/construction" theme or perhaps a broader, more "improving the community" oriented theme. Summer Reading 2018: the theme is Music, the slogan for all-ages is "Libraries Rock!" o A list of potential illustrators were narrowed down to a top 10 of who to approach for posters & clip art, including Frank Morrison, Brian Pinkney and Yuyi Morales. o Chapter themes were brainstormed - I'll be putting out a survey in the somewhat-near future for your topics/ideas. Summer Reading 2019: the theme is Space. (Slogan will be voted on in 2017) o It will be the 50th anniversary of Walking on the Moon. o Washington DC Public Library has a relationship with NASA and we're going to work on expanding that for libraries across the country. Registration: Continuing Education Opportunity for Your Staff and Community

Hello, Friends, Librarians, and Michigan Community Members! The Houghton Lake Public Library has been selected by the University of Michigan to be one of only nine sites in the State of Michigan to host an exciting continuing education opportunity for you, your staff, and your community. The workshop, "Making as Learning: A Three Day Workshop," will be on Wednesday June 15 through Friday June 17 from 9:30am – 4:30pm. You can come the whole three days or register for one! Looking to add open-ended, hands-on learning to the youth in your school, library, community center, troop, or civic group? The maker movement offers youth the opportunity to explore the intersection of STEM, technology, design, aesthetics, creativity, and prototyping. In this workshop, you’ll become immersed in exploring the facets of the maker movement. Over the course of three days, you will meet fellow maker mentors, examine multiple possible entry points for developing or refining your maker program, identify pathways for discovering maker and community needs, design and explore possible programming ideas for formal and informal learning, and grapple with how to mesh together open-endedness assessing them fairly, You’ll engage in a variety of hands-on activities, from creating with recycled materials to 3D printing and modeling, robots to LED bulbs, so you can test out multiple materials and tools to see which fit your community best. You’ll come away with concrete ideas you can use to build or enhance making for the youth in your community. Unique to this location will be a drone demonstration, a discussion of maker kits available through the Mid-Michigan Library League, and a discussion of Houghton Lake’s Minecraft/Perler club. Township Contracts with Libraries

Question for the group... Have any of your libraries had experience with residents wanting their township to contract with you and going about it by way of petition, as is stated in Library law CITY, VILLAGE, AND TOWNSHIP LIBRARIES Act 164 of 1877? We have township residents who want to petition their township board to contract with the library. The residents are not serviced by another library, but their board says the law is "too old". Instead the township board wants their residents to create a petition with a resolution on it to create funding for the library. Then once the petition is received they will place the resolution on the ballot so everyone can vote on contracting with the library at the election in November. I would be interested in talking to anyone who's library has created a contract this way. Please respond off list. -Thank you, Miriam Andrus Big Rapids Community Library 397.214 Contract with township, city, or village for use of library and reading room; procedure; tax levy; library fund. Sec. 14. (1) Upon receipt of a petition signed by not less than 10% of the electors in any township based on the highest vote cast at the last regular election for township officers of the township, addressed to the township board, requesting that a meeting be called of the electors in the township, to consider making a contract with any township, city, or village supporting and maintaining a free public circulating library and reading room under this act, or under any special act, for the use of its privileges by the residents of the township, the township board shall call a meeting of the electors of the township by posting notices in at least 5 public places within the township not less than 10 days before the meeting. The electors present at the meeting shall determine whether the township shall enter into a contract for the use of a free public circulating library and reading room in any township, city, or village and the rate of taxation to be levied for the purpose of paying for that use if the electors decide to enter into such a contract. However, a tax so levied shall not exceed 1 mill of the state equalized valuation of the township. If a majority of those present and voting are in favor of the township contracting for the use of a free public circulating 276 library and reading room maintained in any township, city, or village, the township board may enter into a contract and shall levy and collect the tax provided for in this subsection, which tax when collected shall be placed in a fund to be known as the "library fund". The money in the library fund shall be paid over by the township treasurer to the treasurer of the township, city, or village in which the library is located, on the first day of January, February, and March of each year, to be disbursed subject to the provisions of section 5. This subsection is not a limitation on the contractual power of a legislative body of a city, village, or township under section 13. (2) Notwithstanding any contrary provision in a township, city, or village charter, the library board of directors of a township, city, or village supporting and maintaining a free public circulating library and reading room under this act, or under any special act, may enter into a contract with another township, city, or village to permit the residents of that other township, city, or village the full use of the library and reading room, upon terms and conditions to be agreed upon between the library board of directors and the legislative body of the other township, city, or village. A contract entered into pursuant to this subsection shall be executed for a term of 3 years, shall be automatically extended for an indefinite term after the initial 3-year period, and shall be terminable by either party only on the giving of 6 months' notice of the intent to terminate the contract.
