The Vicksburg District Library is looking to fill the position of Head of Circulation/Reference due to the resignation of our current employee. Head of Circulation/Reference The Vicksburg District Library is looking for a candidate to fill the position as Head of Circulation and Reference Librarian. This is a permanent, part-time position (30 hrs/wk). Must have MLS from an accredited school. Experience preferred but new graduates are welcome. Duties : * Direct the circulation staff * Oversee the operations and management of circulation system (Verso) * Order adult fiction materials, DVD's, Audiobooks, Video Games, Large Print * Moderate monthly book discussion group * Interact with patrons * Publicity- Slides, South County News stories, creating marketing materials and displays * Page and circulation staff training and supervision * Webmaster- manage website * Computer classes/aid patron in use of computers and tablets * Other duties as assigned Starting pay: $18-$20/hr Benefits include : * Two week paid vacation after one year * One sick day for each month worked * Birthday paid day off after one year. The Allegan District Library is looking for an outgoing, self-motivated and detail oriented individual to become part of our dynamic team. The successful candidate will provide front line customer service at our service desks on a temporary basis throughout our busy summer months. Essential job duties include: Ensuring an exemplary library experience by greeting, assisting, instructing and promoting library services to members in a positive and pleasant manner. Using the library’s automated circulation system to circulate materials to library members including checking materials in and out, processing holds, and registering borrowers, collecting fines and fees and processing lost/paid items per set procedures. Provide reference and readers’ advisory, computer, database, inter library loan and referral assistance to members directly, by telephone or by email. Assist with troubleshooting problems and training library members in the use of the public access catalog, internet, electronic databases and other library resources. Assist at circulation desk. Check materials in and out, register members and perform other general tasks pertaining to member service. Encourage, establish and maintain effective working relationships with the library director and coworkers. Performing essential daily operations including opening and closing of circulation desk and building, counting money, emptying the book drop and shelving library materials when needed. Perform related work as required. Job Requirements: A high school diploma and two years of customer service related work experience. Full/Part Time & Hours: Part Time 17 hours per week includes some nights and weekends. MLA and Member Efforts Deliver a Victory for Free Speech and Michigan Libraries: Temporary Injunction is Now Permanent Libraries are once again free to educate and inform voters about upcoming millage elections. Today a permanent injunction was signed by a federal judge in U.S. District Court. This means the section of PA 269/SB 571 prohibiting voter education in not enforceable. The bill, in effect, had banned the dissemination of factual information 60 days prior to a millage election. Immediately after the bill was passed, MLA joined a coalition of associations and groups opposed to the bill and filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the act. A federal judge issued a temporary injunction declaring the section in question was an infringement of constitutional rights. Thousands of library supporters from Michigan and across the country came out in support of free speech and the library's right to provide access to information. After a robust campaign for a veto of the bill, the governor signed it into law. MLA continued to work with legislators to amend the bill and MLA Board of Directors approved participation in the lawsuit as well as an amicus brief to defend our first amendment rights. Thanks to all who took action to let our elected officials know they can count on librarians to ensure the flow of information and education to our communities is accurate and timely. This important victory highlights the significance of MLA advocacy, our GCSI lobbyists and the grassroots efforts of our members. Hi all, Effective today, Gale Cengage<http://www.cengage.com/search/showresults.do?N=197> has rolled out a new browsing feature in the MeL Database Academic OneFile<http://www.galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-gale.php?database=AONE> called Browse by Discipline. Six disciplines - Criminal Justice, Economics, History, Marketing, Political Science, and Psychology now appear front and center and once selected, can be refined by categories to provide search results which include academic journals, magazines, books, news items, videos, and audio. Gale describes the new feature as, "...does the searching for you, making it ideal for the user who struggles with effective Advanced Search strategies and overwhelming results. Content is tailored to specific topics. Smaller and more targeted results will empower users to quickly find relevant content. Publications are hand-selected by subject-matter experts to ensure content is focused on the selected subject area." Patron replacement of books - same edition?

Hello all! I have a few questions on how you handle patron replacement of damaged or lost items. 1. Do you have a fixed price or are they allowed to replace it with a new item? 2. Do they order the replacement item or do they cover your cost? 3. Do they have to replace it in the same edition (hardcover vs trade paperback vs mass market)? 4. What do you charge as a processing fee to process it back into the collection (staff time, mylar, barcode, and call number)? On another note: 1. Do you have any patrons who will not check out trade or mass market paperbacks because of the size of the print, but will check out hardcovers that are not large print? Teresa Irish, A Thousand Letters Home program

I'd like to highly recommend Teresa Irish's A Thousand letters Home program. Teresa Irish presented her “Thousand Letters Home” program at Ida Branch Library on March 28th, 2016. As so many reviewers have already stated Teresa Irish is a highly skillful and engaging storyteller. The audience at my library was spellbound. I couldn’t believe how a group of more than 60 people could be so quiet they listened with rapt attention to Teresa. You could hear a pin drop! She is one of the most engaging speakers I’ve had the pleasure of hosting at my library and hearing for myself. Teresa has a beautiful singing voice and serenaded us a cappella with war era songs from Waltz Time and Hit Parade. So many from the audience sang along too! I found her story to be both informative and uplifting. She recognizes and honors attendees who are serving or have served in the American armed forces.
