Welcome to our monthly Every Child Ready to Read newsletter, which will run through 2016 and 2017 as we go through our Every Child Ready to Read project. Please share widely. April 2016 [top-cork header] ________________________________ Every Child Ready to Read in Michigan - April 2016 [Every Child Ready to Read] ________________________________ [child waving] Welcome to Our Early Literacy Outreach program! Welcome to the first monthly newsletter which is just one component of The Library of Michigan's launch of their two-year Every Child Ready to Read (ECRR) program. The program is based on the American Library Association's project of the same name. Teaching parents and other caregivers including early childhood educators how to support the early literacy development of young children is the basis of the program. The Library of Michigan has ECRR manuals available that libraries can request. Training was offered in March, but it was not necessary to participate in training to receive the manual. Contact Karren Reish at reishk(a)michigan.gov<mailto:reishk@michigan.gov> if you would like a manual. Many libraries feel that they are participating in the ECRR program by instituting practices within their storytime programs. However, that is not the basis of ECRR. In fact, the manual does not address storytime programs per se, rather the initiative's goal is to reach parents and caregivers, specifically those from low-income and/or low education families, with the importance of engaging in early literacy practices with their young children. Those five practices are: Talking; Reading; Singing; Writing and Playing. The manual was written to assist librarians in offering workshops to parents and caregivers. There are five main workshops to offer to adults (four with children present): Parent Workshop; Fun for Parents and Children; Fun with Letters for Parents and Children; Fun with Words for Parents and Children; and Fun with Science and Math for Parents and Children. In addition, there is a workshop to offer to Community Partners; a workshop to train other staff members; and a final workshop on how to create Early Literacy and Learning Spaces. Watch for upcoming training webinars on subjects related to ECRR which will be offered on July 14, August 22, and November 10. The medical group is now rethinking their position and they are reviewing their guidelines in the era of iPads and apps, realizing that their former guidelines are now outdated. Clarke Historical Library Traveling Exhibit

With the financial assistance of the Michigan Humanities Council, the Clarke Historical Library has developed a traveling exhibit discussing Native American treaties and treaty rights in Michigan. The exhibit uses six pull-up exhibit panels, along with printed matter. It discusses what a treaty is and how treaties have been applied to three subjects: land, education, and hunting and fishing. There are also links in the printed material to more extensive essays on these subjects found on the Clarke's website. The exhibit and printed material are available free of charge, except for the cost of transportation. Also included without charge is a public program discussing these topics, which we hope will lead to a discussion within your community about treaties and treaty rights. MCLS Announces Libraries Read: 1 Book 2016

MCLS invites library staff of all types in Indiana and Michigan to participate in an exciting upcoming professional development opportunity. We will join together once again, both physically and virtually to read and discuss the same book. With your help, we will select a book that is relevant to our profession, provides thought-provoking ideas for discussion, and has appeal across all types of libraries. “Last year library staff said they wanted more discussions across multi-types of libraries,” said Randy Dykhuis, MCLS Executive Director. “In response, we launched “Libraries Read: 1 book” in order to create deeper connections among libraries that span geographic and other boundaries. Library World Suffers Loss

Robin Haynes, former librarian of the Camden Twp. Library, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at the age of 91. Anyone connected with Southern Michigan Libraries in the 70s, 80s & 90s probably remembers Robin. The family has chosen to have a visitation on Tuesday, May 3 from 4-7 PM at the Eagle Funeral Home/George White Chapel in Reading, MI with a private family burial at a later date. Michigan Summer of Safety Campaign - Michigan State Police and Libraries

Please see below for information on the Michigan State Police Summer of Safety Campaign for all public libraries. The MSP will be sending promotional materials to libraries in May for use in your summer programming. _______________________________________________________ The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) is asking Michigan libraries to join us for the second year of the summer traffic safety campaign, Michigan Summer of Safety. Michigan Summer of Safety is a reminder to all of us to "take safety along for the ride" by driving and boating sober, wearing helmets and reflective gear when biking and riding motorcycles, and always wearing a seat belt. The goal is to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries on Michigan roads by increasing seat belt use and safe summer travel. In May, OHSP will be mailing all Michigan libraries bookmarks, stickers and a banner. Libraries can also join the conversation on social media by following OHSP on Facebook and Twitter and using #misummerofsafety to promote safe travels from Memorial Day to Labor Day. #misummerofsafety will provide a platform for a more significant social media presence and increase your reach on safety messages to your audience.
