Re-Envisioning Your Public Library
by Atkin, Evette (MDE) 17 Oct '16

17 Oct '16

Have you heard of the Aspen Institute? Across the country communities are using their public libraries in unique and exciting ways. From Makerspaces and robots to Farmers' Markets , libraries are transforming to meet the changing needs of their communities and continuing to serve as the center of learning and knowledge creation. The Aspen Institute describes a "new world of knowledge", with the public library serving as a "vital learning institution and engine for individual, community, and civil society development." While each of our communities will approach this new era differently, there are common benchmarks that can be utilized to ensure that the public library remains "the essential civil society space where this new America will make its democratic character." Write Michigan Call for Volunteer Reviewers
by Heidi Nagel 17 Oct '16

17 Oct '16

Hi all, Kent District Library and our partner Schuler Books are working to finalize our list of volunteer reviewers for the 2017 Write Michigan Short Story contest. To find out more about the contest, you can visit our webpage at www.writemichigan.org<http://www.writemichigan.org>. Volunteer reviewers read and rate the short story submissions in order to determine the top ten semi-finalists. Details: -The short story contest has three age categories - adult (18+), teen (12-17) and youth (11 and under). Writers need to live in Michigan (students count). This year we have added a Spanish-Language contest category for all ages. So if you happen to be literate in Spanish, please indicate on the information I am collecting below. -Winners earn cash prizes and are included in a printed anthology. -Volunteers read about 10-13 stories each (depending on the category and how many submissions we read). Each story is read by two people. -Stories are anonymous (unless the author includes their name on the PDF). -We ask you not to review in the category where you or someone you know (family or friend) is entering. -Submissions are available to volunteers online. Each volunteer has a login. -Reading/reviewing takes place between Monday, December 5 and Friday, December 30. Every year, we have reviewers that can't complete their assignments (life happens). So now, we ask reviewers if they could review a few stories last minute and it is so helpful. Please indicate below if you would be willing to do that too. Those reviews would happen Friday, December 31 - Tuesday, January 3 (you would get an email on Friday, December 30 for your new assignment). Ready to go? Please send the following information to Michelle Boisvenue-Fox (mboisvenue-fox(a)kdl.org<mailto:mboisvenue-fox@kdl.org>) by Friday, November 4: 1. Name / Email address 2. Organization 3. First Choice category (adult | teen | youth | No Preference) 4. Second Choice category (adult | teen | youth | No Preference) 5. Last minute reviewing? Yes or no. 6. Review in Spanish? Yes or no. One more thing: if you work in a library or have access to a community board would you help us get the word out by posting a flyer? We have all sizes available at our media kit online - http://www.writemichigan.org/media.html. Thank you kindly!
