World Sight Day: Promote Awareness At Your Library!
by Wambaugh, Stephanie (LARA) 13 Oct '16

13 Oct '16

Today, October 13th, is World Sight Day. Many Michigan residents suffer from visual impairment or blindness. The Michigan Braille and Talking Book Library (BTBL) is devoted to providing recreational reading materials to people with vision loss in audio or braille format. Patrons do NOT have to be blind to use our FREE service! Most people who struggle to read standard print would qualify to receive our audio or braille books right to their mailbox (or via download!). Please pass our information on to anyone that you believe may qualify. Losing your sight doesn't have to mean losing the joy of reading-our motto is "That All May Read". Please use this day to spread awareness about blindness and vision impairment by posting the attached images to your library website or social media page with a short explanation about World Sight Day or the BTBL service. Also, continue to focus on these issues for the entire month of October, which is National Blindness Awareness Month. Thank you, Stephanie Wambaugh Reader Advisor, Outreach & Youth Librarian BSBP Braille & Talking Book Library P.O. Box 30007 702 W. Accepting debit/credit cards
by Janelle Martin 13 Oct '16

13 Oct '16

Hello Everyone, Our library currently doesn't accept debit/credit cards but we have made it our goal to be able to by the end of next year. We are looking for the best solution for both the library and our patrons (cost/convenience, etc.). If you currently accept debit/credit cards, what hardware/software/service do you use? Do you pass the transaction fee on to your patrons or does the library pay for it? Is there anything that we need to know when making a decision like this? Any information or advice that you are willing to share would be extremely helpful. Thank you in advance, Janelle Janelle Martin Head of Fiction Marguerite deAngeli Library Lapeer District Library 921 W. Records Retention Management
by Katie Simpson 13 Oct '16

13 Oct '16

Hi Everyone, Our library is looking to begin converting all our paper files into an electronic database. Our plan is to begin using an electronic system to organize all the files that would allow us to easily sort though as well as to enter a creation and destroy date based on our records retention schedule. We are looking for any feedback you have. Are you using a program like this or just saving the files within your network? What programs are you using? What are the pros/cons? Do you feel like the cost is reasonable for the service provided? Any additional information? Thank you! The Library of Michigan's evaluation of its current Five-Year Plan for Michigan's Library Service & Technology Act (LSTA) funds is just beginning. It is being conducted by an independent evaluator and one of the methods for information gathering is a series of focus groups from Library Community representatives. If you are near enough to one of the below locations, and available on the day indicated for that location, please follow the link below to submit your name for consideration. It will ask you for some very basic information (which location, your library, your position in the library and whether or not you have had contact with any LSTA funded programs). Focus Group Sites: * Henry Ford Centennial Library (Dearborn) - Wednesday, November 9th - 10 am to noon * Chippewa River District Library (Mount Pleasant) - Thursday, November 10th - 10 am to noon * Kent District Library, Kentwood Branch (Kentwood) - Friday, November 11th - 10 am to noon * Peter White Public Library (Marquette) - Thursday, November 17th - 10 am to noon Submit Your Name: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LSTAFocusGroups There will be 8-12 participants in each group and as best as possible they will represent different libraries and different positions within libraries. Peanut Allergy Policies
by Allison Ferguson 12 Oct '16

12 Oct '16

Greetings Library Community, I have a patron who will be attending our board meeting because they want to make us enforce a nut-free policy in our library. As a small public library with a very limited staff (and budget), I see a hard time enforcing/implementing this rule. As this is our first and only request for this policy, I am unsure of how to respond. Have any of you dealt with this issue before, and if so, do you have any policies you would be willing to share? Thank you for your help, Allie Ferguson Director, Lyons Twp. District Library
