Hi all, By now you know about and have utilized the Google tools integrated into many of Gale's MeL databases. Share to Classroom and Google Drive greatly expand the flexibility and portability of the Gale databases content. Just announced on the Gale Blog, many of Gale's databases now also include Microsoft Office 365 integration, "further enabling users to access Gale content anytime, anywhere, and from any device. Internship at Western Michigan University Libraries We are looking for a library or information science student or recent graduate to serve as a temporary replacement in the Research and Instruction Services department at Waldo Library in Western Michigan University. The purpose is to give an early career colleague professional practice in an academic library so that they may gain experience on which to build their career. The intern will start with basic reference and instruction responsibilities, but has the potential to become more involved with various special projects as they arise, depending on skills and interests. Dates: September 2016 - June 2017. Hours: 15-20 hours a week, except for the last week in December, when the university is closed. Salary: Hourly rate ranging from $18 to $23. Responsibilities: · Answer reference questions at the desk, by phone, email or chat. · Provide in-depth reference help by appointment. · Provide instruction to lower-level/introductory courses. · Work on research guides and tutorials. · Help librarians and other library staff on projects as needed. · Participate in departmental meetings. (Currently twice a month on Tuesday mornings.) · Keep a log of activities and record questions answered in RefAnalytics. Hello All, Here is the flyer for our two upcoming Continuing Ed workshops on Friday, September 16 called "Learn Tips and Tricks using the Dewey Decimal System." As most of you deal daily with Dewey - I'll give you a little more detail so that you can see how this may still help you improve your skills, even if you've been working in libraries for a few years now. The morning session "Finding Items Using Dewey" is aimed at any staff member who works with patrons to find books on a certain subject. Many times a subject is located in more than one Dewey number - and you'll learn some tips on finding all aspects of a certain topic! This would be great especially for new employees or those who always have a nagging feeling that they are missing something! The afternoon session "Assigning Call Numbers Using Dewey" is a general overview of how to assign a call number and will touch on the most often used subdivisions and tables. This would be great for folks who have been thrown into cataloging with no specific coursework behind it - but also those who just wonder why do certain numbers seem to be always tacked on to others? Both of these sessions are taught by experienced catalogers: Susan Kroes (Hackley Public Library) and Jeri Walsh-Allis (Herrick District Library. Registration is open today. You have the option of indicating whether you would like to purchase a $10 boxed lunch that will be served in between sessions. The Library of Michigan is looking for a customer service oriented and technically savvy student to assist our Statewide Library Services department. The majority of the work will involve assisting library consultants carry out services and programs for the Michigan library community. A high degree of proficiency with MS Excel is required. The student assistant will be working with the MeL Team in compiling statistics as well as assisting Library Consultants on continuing education and early literacy projects. The student employee will also assist with general office tasks such as sorting mail, filing, handling calls and queries from the library community and other projects. This position requires excellent computer skills, a great attention to detail, the ability to quickly learn new software and excellent customer service. A successful candidate will be a self-starter that can handle a high degree of independent work and collaborate with our existing teams. This position will provide a broad view of library systems and services from a state library perspective. This is an excellent opportunity for a LIS student interested in gaining insight to state level operations. This is a part time position working 24 hours/week. The hourly pay is $11.59/hr.
