saturday scheduling

Someone asked for the feedback I received from the Saturday rotation question the other day. I had 43 responses. Almost all except 1 or 2 had a variation of rotating Saturdays. Some libraries rotated full time, some part time, many both full and part time. A couple libraries let the staff pick on a monthly schedule. Thank you for all the information. Deadline for FOML's "Harriet Larson Founder's Grant" is September 30th

In honor of a founding member of the Friends of Michigan Libraries, FOML awards up to two grants annually. Each “Harriet Larson Founders Grant” is worth up to $400 each. They are designed to help Friends groups in their efforts to support, enhance and showcase their local library. The grants will be awarded by the Grants Committee based on the following priorities when reviewing applications, provided an applicant meets all of the eligibility requirements: 1. A new Friends group is being officially formed; 2. A Friends group that is being rejuvenated, with a higher priority given to a group with a longer period of inactivity; 3. An existing Friends group has a proposal for increasing membership, increasing community awareness, or a proposal for a novel approach to advocating for their library in the community. “Harriet Larson Founders Grant” applications received by September 30th of each year will be considered at the following FOML Board meeting. All applicants should be aware that the purchase or rental of equipment (such as audio-visual equipment or kitchen appliances) needed to implement the activities or events associated with this grant are not considered valid expenditures. We currently use Sierra, an Innovative product, but due to our current user arrangement we are looking to switch systems in the next year or so. Hillsdale Community Library Job Opening Library Clerk General Description: The Clerk performs various duties as assigned in the day-to-day operation of the library. The primary responsibility of the Library Clerk is to work at the circulation desk, assist patrons and to manage interlibrary loan services. The Clerk reports to, and is evaluated by, the Library Director. Examples of Duties: § Check books, magazines and other library holdings in and out at the circulation desk § Collect fines using an automated circulation system § Assist patrons with questions about public access computers or computer functions § Answer telephone and provide routine information to patrons § Operate a variety of standard office and library machines § Notify patrons about reserve and overdue materials § Provide basic reference service or, if unable to do so, refer matter to librarian § Perform routine book maintenance and processing § Assist librarian with collection development § Help oversee library pages and or volunteers § Attend staff meetings § Perform other related duties as required Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: § High school diploma required, some college preferred § Position requires a service oriented individual who is able to interact with a diverse population, establish good rapport with library users, and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees § Some knowledge of library clerical procedures and practices § Firm grasp of the English language § Must understand and follow written and oral instructions § Must be extremely organized and pay close attention to detail § Ability to master automated circulation system and library procedures § Some basic accounting abilities § Ability to remain calm and use good judgment during confrontational or high-pressure situations This is a 24-29 hour per week position with evening and/or Saturday work.
