Hello, library partners. We are hoping you will share the following article in your newsletters and on your websites. As always, thanks so much for your help and support! [SOS with kangaroo]<http://links.govdelivery.com/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbXNpZD0mYXVpZD0m…> Kangaroo-themed campaign urges Secretary of State customers to 'Hop Online' at ExpressSOS.com Secretary of State Ruth Johnson is reminding customers-with the help of a kangaroo-to hop online, not in line with ExpressSOS.com<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbXNpZD0mYXVpZ…>. The new electronic ad campaign is premiering at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this January. The fun video, which was produced in-house by SOS staff, includes Secretary of State Ruth Johnson "rapping" to the music alongside a "rapping" kangaroo. View the video online at Michigan.gov/kangaruth<http://www.michigan.gov/kangaruth>. In 2014, libraries across Michigan partnered with the Secretary of State's office to promote the availability of public library computers for completing Secretary of State transactions. On ExpressSOS.com, library patrons can renew registration/tabs for cars, trucks, motorcycles and watercraft. With its Print'N Go feature, you can print a receipt and drive your vehicle legally until the tabs arrive in the mail. Most people can also renew or replace a standard driver's license or state ID. Keep in mind that every eight years, customers need to visit an SOS branch office to get an updated photo. Other online services at ExpressSOS.com include requests for duplicate vehicle registrations and titles, address changes and updates to personal information. You can even join the organ donor registry. Cathleen Simlar Cathleen P. seed library
by Loretta Sherfield 12 Jan '17

12 Jan '17

Hi all: I'm in charge of starting a Seed Exchange Library here at Branch District. I'm looking for ideas, suggestions, precautions and advice from any libraries that are currently offering a seed exchange program. Do you have patron's fill out forms to take and give seeds? Do you worry about non-gmo vs gmo, heirloom or organic seeds, or do your donors just bring in generic seeds to share? Do you have "not responsible for...." notices with the seeds? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Loretta -- Loretta Sherfield Branch District Library Interlibrary Loan Department

Transformation through Teamwork: Developing a Collaborative Leadership Environment in a Changing World
by Atkin, Evette (MDE) 12 Jan '17

12 Jan '17

Take a look at this online, multi-session course offered by Library Juice Academy! For more information, visit http://libraryjuiceacademy.com/148-collaborative.php. Dates: February 6 to March 3, 2017 Price: $175 Collaborative leadership is a major leadership buzzword these days, but many library leaders may be a little hazy on what it actually is. More than an emphasis on teamwork or listening skills, collaborative leadership models provide a framework for increasing connection and communication, flattening hierarchies, and always focusing on encouraging strong ideas and coaching team members into a force for organizational transformation. Collaborative leadership, when implemented well, can enable your library team to transcend petty infighting, focus on shared goals, and to identify ideas that can transform the library into a resource that more effectively serves larger organizations or communities in which they operate. However, if collaborative leadership practices aren't implemented thoughtfully, they can lead to conflict and chaos. At the end of this course, you will understand the elements of collaborative leadership, consider the ways collaborative practices can strengthen your team (as well as common pitfalls), and create a plan to make your department or library a more collaborative place. This course is designed for library directors and department heads who are interested in finding workable ways to make their teams more collaborative, as well as aspiring leaders who are interested in collaborative leadership. Each weekly course module will focus on a particular theme: * Week One: The elements of collaborative leadership * Week Two: Collaborative Leadership as a tool for Library Transformation * Week Three: Risks of Collaborative Leadership * Week Four: Developing a plan for Collaboration at your library Topics covered include: * History and Models of Collaborative Leadership * Benefits and risks of Collaborative Leadership * Distribution of power * Knowledge sharing * Listening Skills * Facilitating Brainstorming & encouraging new ideas * Collaborative resource allocation (especially when in short supply) * Rules and responsibilities in a collaborative workplace * Conflict management and resolution * Coaching and feedback Evette M.
