Nut/Allergen Free Library Policy

Greetings Library Community, I have a patron who will be attending our board meeting because they want to make us enforce a nut-free policy in our library. As a small public library with a very limited staff (and budget), I see a hard time enforcing/implementing this rule. As this is our first and only request for this policy, I am unsure of how to respond. Have any of you dealt with this issue before, and if so, do you have any policies you would be willing to share? The grant application deadline for those who submit the form and are eligible libraries is January 31st. The grant program is designed to provide Michigan libraries with the opportunity to develop innovative programs or services that have the potential to develop into sustainable regional or statewide programs, and include strong partnerships between libraries, and/or community groups or agencies. Applicants may propose a library program or service in any content area appropriate for library services, such as: * To develop an innovative service or program to meet a newly identified community need; * To meet the increased community demand for a service or resource; * To improve or develop new services to target populations, such as people from diverse geographic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds; individuals with disabilities; and individuals with limited functional literacy, limited English proficiency or limited information literacy skills. The grant program is competitive. The grant period will be from one to three years and funding will be for $50,000 to $225,000 per year up to a possible total of $500,000 over three years. Applications will be reviewed by the Library of Michigan staff and the LSTA Advisory Council as peer reviewers. No more than ONE to THREE grants will be approved. Eligible applicants include Michigan public, academic, school and special libraries as well as non-profit statewide organizations that serve Michigan libraries. [header] How to Develop an Effective Strategic Plan for Your Library Tuesday, October 18, 2016, 2 -3 pm, EST This webinar will demonstrate how important a sound strategic plan is for libraries to accomplish their mission in an effective and rational way. An adequate strategic plan will allow librarians and staff to work as a team, under a patron-centered philosophy, taking the maximum advantage of existing talent, budget, space, and technological resources. A well-developed strategic plan is an indispensable tool for effective decision making in the workplace and will promote pro-active initiatives instead of a reactive attitude towards service implementation. Librarians will learn how to develop a strategic plan based on the results of the analysis of the library’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. They will learn what these are and how to decide the library’s future based on this analysis (environmental scanning). They will learn how to prioritize their time, energy, talents, and resources to maximize the library’s impact on their community. Presenters [Marques]Silas Marques is a full professor at the James White Library and an adjunct professor at the Leadership Program and at the School of Business Administration at Andrews University. He was previously a full professor at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science of the Catholic University of Campinas, Brazil. He holds a Doctorate of Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois and obtained his BSc and MSc also in Library and Information Science from the Fundação Escola de Sociologia e Política de São Paulo and Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, respectively.
