Presenter Recommendation: Donut Dolly Joann Puffer Kotcher
by Brandi Tambasco 09 Jan '17

09 Jan '17

Hiya Fellow Librarylanders, I have a presenter recommendation for you. Back in November, the Howell Carnegie District Library hosted our annual Veterans Day program. Our presenter, Joann Puffer Kotcher, was an interesting, entertaining speaker. She served as an American Red Cross volunteer during the early part of the Vietnam War and wrote a meticulously researched memoir based on her journal from that time called Donut Dolly: An American Red Cross Girl's War in Vietnam. We had 50 people attend the evening program and, of those, about 8 were veterans and 4 young adults. Pictures from the event are on our Facebook page<https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1322669094433151.1073741885.13955…>. We had positive feedback from attendees, with one person even telling me she could listen to her for hours! Mrs. Kotcher is a native Michigander, living in Rochester Hills. She customizes her presentations for each event and has a very reasonable rate for libraries. For us, she gave an hour-long presentation with pictures, an audience Q&A, and a book signing both before and after her presentation. Her website is http://donutdolly.vpweb.com/ and her email address is donutdolly66(a)gmail.com<mailto:donutdolly66@gmail.com>. She is very responsive to emails and showed up on time with her display items, books for sale, and assistant. Between the two of them, they took care of their own display setup and sales. Mrs. Kotcher was a pleasure to work with. Have a lovely day, Brandi Brandi Tambasco Adult Services Librarian Howell Carnegie District Library 314 W Grand River Howell, MI 48843 T: 517-546-0720 x131 F: 517-546-1494 tambasco(a)howelllibrary.org<mailto:tambasco@howelllibrary.org> www.howelllibrary.org<http://www.howelllibrary.org/>

Reading challenge
by Grai, Rebecca 09 Jan '17

09 Jan '17

Happy New Year everyone! We are a small business university library. For the new year, we are starting a reading challenge. The idea is to encourage our students (and any others) to read more. We have a few ideas already, but I'm reaching out to any other university library that has tried this. What did you do to get participation? What worked, what didn't? What suggestions might you have for this project? Did you limit this to students or include anyone? The eligible reading materials are books, newspapers, (10 articles=1 book) magazines/periodicals (5=1 book), and newspapers (10 individual papers=1 book) . Each time someone finishes a book (not a textbook) or magazine, etc., they come to the library for a sticker (or some other thing) and places it on a "bookshelf" that we are creating out of paper. We are running this project all year and we want to fill the shelf with our read materials. We are not making this a contest or anything like that. It is just reading for the enjoyment of it. Any ideas? TIA, Rebecca Grai Strosacker Library 989-837-4333 Northwood University - Developing the future leaders of a global free-enterprise society. Dual monitor setup for patrons to see your computer screen?
by Andrea Estelle 06 Jan '17

06 Jan '17

Has anyone out there discovered a nice-looking way to implement a dual monitor type of setup that would allow our patrons to see the computer screen at the circ/ref desk when we want them to see it? I am looking for a system that would allow this that could be controlled easily (turned on/off as needed) by our staff and would keep us from having to swivel the monitors around to try to show them what we are doing? I don't want to add something clunky looking to our circ/reference desk so I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a creative, sleek solution to this!?
